Blog Less, Work Less, & Still Make Money
My blog pals all seem to have similar goals this New Year’s – to slow down, take on less work, and to have more free time. Letting go of work when so many bloggers are out there looking for more new gigs may seem counter-productive to the success of your career. However, having fewer jobs doesn’t have to mean less success or even less income. Look for better opportunities. You don’t have to take that lower paying gig. This can be the year you reach for the stars. Believe me there ARE higher paying blogging gigs out there you just [Read more…]
How to Tell if You’re Spreading Yourself Too Thin
In order to make way for a more lucrative blogging gig beginning December 1st, I trimmed a down my client list. It was a difficult decision because I love all my blogging gigs, but I’m working on a full time gig and something had to give.It turns out December 2007 is not only my highest paying month, but it’s the month where I’ve done the least amount of work. I’m sure many of you can relate. With freelancing, I never turn down gigs. That’s good for the bank account, but I find myself waking up at 4:00 AM and working [Read more…]

Feel free to visit my guest post at Probloggert on the one thing I did to improve my blog in 2007 and also my guest post at Offbeat Homes (up later today) about what is going on in my old neighborhood in Queen, NY. How much money should you make blogging?
By Jennifer Chait The question of how much money you should make as a professional blogger pops up a lot; at forums, in my emails from people, etc. The problem with this question is that there is no clear answer. It’s a personal question on top of an already extremely variable paying market. Just how variable is the market? Well, I’ve seen blogs advertised lately paying $10 a week but personally I won’t blog anywhere for under $100 a month and that’s low end – the posts would need to be extremely manageable (or the perks stellar). I also have [Read more…]
Make the Job Hunt Part of the Job
When you’re scheduling time for your freelance writing duties, don’t forget the all-important job hunt. If you’re really serious about finding work, you’ll want to spend an hour or two "trolling" for job leads. That doesn’t sound very attractive, does it? The truth is there are a lot of jobs out there right now. Most of them are for web-writing opportunities, but there are also plenty of print opportunities available. When you take time each day to look for work, not only might you get a jump on the competition, but it’s also a way to spot trends and see [Read more…]
Happy Holidays
Job postings will be sporadic for the next couple of weeks. Jodee is taking some very well-deserved time off and I’ll be spending time with my large extended family. But do check back often. Both Jodee and I will pop in here and there to offer job listings and articles…and please feel free to talk among yourselves. We look forward to building an even better freelance writing community in 2008!

Should You Write on Spec?
Yesterday I asked you to offer up your tips on getting started as a writer. One of the regulars suggested writing on spec and discussion ensued. (Which is never a bad thing.) So should you write on spec? What is Writing on "Spec" Writing on spec is sending an article to an editor without a promise of publication. The editor will read the piece first to see if he likes it, then make an offer. If he doesn’t like it, you’re free to shop the piece elsewhere. Why Write on Spec? Writing on spec is a good way to get [Read more…]

Your Turn…How to Get Started as a Freelance Writer
Forgive me, I’m a little tired. My family is sick and I braved the crowded stores today. Do you mind if I turn the FWJ over to you today? When I checked my gmail this evening there were dozens of letters from writers looking to get their start. Now, I know I’ve posted about this in the past. Rather than rehash and rewrite, I thought I’d turn the floor over to you. What is the one tip you can offer to writers looking to get their start? Where do they begin? How do they begin? Do and don’ts? Here’s mine, [Read more…]
