Where do you look for work?

When I first began freelancing, I had no clue where to look for work. There were a few job boards here and there, and when Craigslist first began it only covered San Francisco. It wasn’t easy for a new writer to find work back then, now I think it’s much easier. I don’t really troll the job boards as much as I used to, though I do try and see what’s out there. When I look for jobs I usually visit the aforementioned Craigslist and ProBlogger. If I have time, I’ll give Indeed a whirl. I’m past the point where [Read more…]

I’ve been remiss. These past few weeks have been hectic and I haven’t had much time to post blogging jobs. I’m pleased to report blogging jobs are back and I’ll try to add a list to About Weblogs at least once a week. In addition, Jodee will post blogging jobs here as well. What is the worst gig on your resume?

We’ve all been desperate for money, especially when just starting out. I remember writing articles about the best way to clean vomit off the carpet and how to get dog poo out of one’s automobile upholstery. I also wrote plenty of boring SEO content with silly keywords and phrases. That’s about as low as I’d sink though. Oh and there was the time I wrote about various foot ailments for a site selling foot ailments. I got to discuss corns, fungi and hammer toe. Yes, it’s wonderful to be me. Tell us..what is the worst gig on your resume? Was [Read more…]

Freelancers Unite

Freelance Switch has a good point. What are other freelancers doing, charging and thinking? It’s something we all wonder about. They’ve created a survey all freelancers should take regarding our habits, earnings and reasons for doing what we do.  The survey aims to “compile our collective knowledge for the benefit of freelancers everywhere.” I took the survey, it doesn’t take much time at all. PLUS you can win some cool prizes!

What are your biggest challenges?

This is my dream job. I have great clients, I can work off my back deck and I don’t have to commute to an office any more. Like any job however, there are challenges. Time management is a big one, especially now that there’s no school. We do have camp a few mornings a week, but that ends this week, so it’ll only get worse until the first week of September. Time management isn’t my biggest challenge, however. Then there’s the working at home thing. People seem to expect more of you when you’re home based. If I worked in [Read more…]

Where do you work?

Up until a month ago, I worked from my kitchen table. I would set up my laptop on the table and work, and remove the laptop for meals. This arrangement worked fine for a couple of years, my only complaint was having to constantly dismantle the computer so my family could eat. Now I work on a folding table set up in a corner of my dining room, or outside on the back deck. Many of my fellow writers and bloggers couldn’t work with this arrangement, as they need to be in a room with absolutely no distractions. I [Read more…]

Can you earn a good living blogging?

I’m often asked why I quit content & copy writing to become a full time blogger. The answer is twofold: 1. I enjoy the work more. I can be more expressive when I’m blogging and inject my opinion and personality. As long as I stay on topic (and sometimes, even if I don’t) I can write whatever I want. I can blog 50 words or 500 words and it’s still considered a “post”. There’s a lot less pressure with this kind of work. 2. It’s lucrative. I’m earning more blogging than I ever did writing content. At the beginning of [Read more…]

What kind of writing do you do?

Thanks to everyone who emailed about these discussions. I’m so glad you’re enjoying them.  I was talking to a brand new writer today and she had questions about the different types of writing, what they entail, and whether or not they’re lucrative. Since I get a couple of thousand visitors each day here, it struck me that there are a lot of different types of writers stopping by. Which leads me to my next questions…what kind of writing do you do? As you know, I am a professional blogger. I didn’t always do this, however. I started out as an [Read more…]

How do you make keywords work for you?

Don’t miss today’s leads. I hate keywords. When I write, I like the words to flow freely. That doesn’t happen when I have to figure out how to make keywords work in a sentence. My hatred of keywords is one of the reasons I don’t do much of that kind of writing anymore. I did it for years and made a great living, but I’m over it now. Sure, there’s SEO involved in blogging, but it’s kind of optional and I can write what I want without having to make sense of some silly keywords. It’s easy enough to write [Read more…]

The Writer’s Row Forum

Some of you many be aware of the forum at Writer’s Row. At one time we were having quite the party. The past few months however, have been dead. I and the other members of Writer’s Row are wondering if there’s enough interest to keep the forum going, or if we should just shut it down. If you’re interested in keeping the forum alive, do stop by and participate. If you don’t see a topic that interests you, start a new one. If you see an interesting discussion, even if it’s old, please jump in. Otherwise, if we don’t have [Read more…]

More PLR Stuff

Ok, so I received several smackdowns regarding this PLR thing, many writers claim it to be quite lucrative. I’m wondering if any of the PLR writers can tell us how much they have earned with one set of articles, and how many times said set sold. Thanks!

Weekend Discussion: PLR How Much is Too Much?

First of all, I’d like to thank everyone who participates in my discussions in a mature, intelligent manner without resorting to personal attacks or insulting the members of this community. One of the things I love about this blog is that I can throw a topic out for discussion and I know most of you will be helpful and thoughtful in your response. Indeed you may even disagree, but you do so respectfully. I believe the main reason my blog is so popular is because of this community. I’m holding off on guest bloggers for a while because I’d rather [Read more…]

Thanks Jodee, and thank you!

I just want to thank Jodee for being such an awesome help these past few weeks. Summer is a tough time for me with my son home, plus I’m blogging full time. That doesn’t leave too much time for me to troll for leads. My options are to get rid of the blog or post less, scrape the feeds (which is akin to stealing, in my opinoon) or hire someone so I can continue to offer you the personal service you have come to expect these past couple of years. It cuts deep into my profits, but this blog is [Read more…]

What Won’t You Write About?

I was thinking about this yesterday. I wonder if I would have been so successful in my writing career if there was no Internet. Sure, I spent a dozen years in publishing, but writing for print doesn’t provide the instant gratification one gets writing for the web. In seven years I’ve had a lot of content posted to a lot of websites. Most of that is about topics near and dear to my heart: blogging, food, household matters, parenting, saving money and pop culture. There’s been some general interest stuff, but only that which I feel qualified to write about. [Read more…]

Editorial Liberties

I have an editor who loves to make changes! This gig is fairly new and pays very well but I’m not sure what to make of my her. She makes changes to just about every post without discussing it with me, and sometimes they can be a little silly. Maybe it’s my ego. As a blogger, I never have editors come by and change my work. Most know bloggers can write freely, as long as they don’t cross a particular line. Bloggers don’t follow the same guidelines as regular writers. In fact, I’ve never had an occasion when one of [Read more…]

Weekend Discussion:Using a Writer’s Website to Promote Your Freelance Writing

by Robin Shreeves I’ve been freelancing for a little over two years now. I don’t do it full time because I’ve still got a preschooler at home. I probably spend about 15-20 hours a week freelancing. I also don’t take on too many long term assignments because I don’t want to be tied down to a project for too long since my first priority is my family at the moment. So, I need to find new clients fairly recently and that means I apply to a lot of leads. Recently, I’ve been getting very favorable replies to all of the [Read more…]
