About.com is looking for a Guide for Freelance Writing

About.com’s Guide to Freelance Writing has moved on, and the position is open again. I know many people here are more than qualifed, if you feel like applying. About.com pays $725 per month and that will go up as traffic increases.

Being an About.com Guide opened up many doors for me and has so far been an amazing and positive experience.

Sue, click on the link in the post (About.com’s Guide to Freelance Writing) and apply there. I’m just telling you about the job, I’m not hiring.

  4. Paul says:

    Deb,

I clicked on the site but where do you go from there? I’m confused.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  5. admin says:

    Hi Paul,

Do you see where the picture of the Guide would be (if there was a Guide)? At the top of the page it says “Apply here”.

    Hope that helps.

    Deb

  6. Paul says:

    Deb,

I see where it says ‘apply now’, but not ‘apply here’ and the apply now isn’t the job.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  7. admin says:

Oh dear…I see that now. It should take you directly to the application page but it doesn’t.

    Ok, try this:

Deb, thanks for the hot tip! I’m sure there will be dozens of applicants, but it’s great to get the inside scooop.

  9. Kara says:

Got any scoop on why the guide left? She seemed to have started off so strong with some hearty articles, then it sort of fizzled.

  10. Matt Keegan says:

Thank you for the information, Deborah. I am glad to hear that they are one of the better paying gigs out there. Some of the blogging networks offer what amounts to a stipend.

  11. admin says:

    @Kara – I don’t honestly know. I thought she was doing a great job.

  12. Lauren says:

Thanks for the heads-up Deb! Looks like there is a lot of interest out there.

  13. Emily says:

Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, with About.com? I’ve heard that if they select you as a finalist, you have to spend weeks writing content and learning their system without pay, and then you could still come out of the training period to find you weren’t selected. I was just wondering if it was worth pursuing.

  14. Julie E. says:

Thanks to all about the job at About.com. I should have read through this first. I kind of worry about this particular job, because Loolwa, the last guide, was only there for what seemed a short time, and they had another woman before that, and she didn’t seem to be there very long, either. Not trying to downplay the job, but just curious. I actually e-mailed the last guide to see what was up, so we’ll see if she will respond to my question.

  15. Kara says:

    Julie -

Would be great if you let us know what she has to say, if she responds!

  16. AmeliaMT says:

It looks as if her hands gave out or were injured? I think the job is a LOT of work-may be more so because it is a freelance writing site.
It also seems that the high profile freelance positions attract a lot more snarkiness and it may be that played a part.
That is my wild speculation and yet I still apply for any topics that I am qualified for at About.

  17. Karen says:

I am a current writer at About. I have been there since 2005 and I love it. They are easy to work for- just follow directions- and it is a lucrative experience. The more traffic you get the more you make. It is one of the few jobs you can take that allows you to earn money based on effort. Getting the job is a workout. You have to put in the time to prove yourself during the initial hiring period but after that the workload and the pay is very reasonable.

  18. AmeliaMT says:

I agree Karen. It is definitely one of the better places to work. I have been trying for an embarrassingly long time to get hired there. I am talking 8 years or so. I have applied for spiders, coffee, pagan/wiccan, on and on and on…I know I should get the hint but I *really* want to get there. LOL..Don’t tell ME no!

    Still plugging along,

    Amelia

  19. Lori says:

I hate to say it, but I’m glad the editor moved on. I had issues early with the way generalizations were being presented as facts. In fact, I wrote to About and to the editor. Both responded and yes, the editor was gracious, but I don’t think she understood my point, which was that generalizations can be dangerous.

If any of you are able to secure the job, I wish you all the best and I’ll be rooting for you!

Hi all. I am one of the five finalists for this position. I actually found it and applied mere hours before Deb put the word out. Wish me luck! I will definitely try my best!

  21. admin says:

Allycat – Just so you know, there’s a good chance none of the five in prep right now will get the gig! In which case About will bring in five more. I have to say, this is the first time I know of several people going through prep on the same subject. Good luck to you Allycat.
