What was your first big break?

Who knew that the one thing stirring up more emotions than the low pay issue is publishing a novel? I appreciate how you’re all keeping it civil down there, thanks. When I was writing yesterday’s discussion topic it occurred to me that we talk mostly about writing for the web because that’s where most of my experience lies. But I do have print experience as well. In fact, A few years ago I had a weekly column in a Philadelphia newspaper. Since there so many aspiring columnists asking me how I got my start, I thought I’d tell you about [Read more…]

Tell us about your book

I received several emails from writers who are interesting in having novels or books published. Half of them have no clue what to do first. I’m really not qualified to answer as I’ve never gone that route. I know many of you have published work or have attempted to have your manusrcripts published. Perhaps you can help? My readers are interested in learning about the process. Specifically: How many times did you submit your manuscript before someone showed interest? Did you have help writing your book proposal? What are the steps necessary to take before submitting your book to a [Read more…]

Building a community

Hi All, As you know, I’ve been working hard these past few months to build up this community. My hard work is indeed paying off and I’m rewarded with lots of comments featuring good advice or friendly agreement – or disagreement. Now it’s time for me to give something back. If you look at the bottom right, you’ll notice a “Top commeters” box.  (Thanks Ajay for installing the plugin.) At the end of September, the person whose name is at the top of the list will receive a $50 Amazon gift certificate. Before you get too excited, let me tell [Read more…]

The best and worst things about freelancing

The best thing about being a freelancer is being able to make your own hours. We discuss it here plenty, so you pretty much know how I feel. My worst day freelancing is better than my best day at an office job. I’ll do this is as long as I can, hopefully forever. The benefits of freelancing abound. I think the best thing, for me, is the ability to work when I want and make my own schedule. The worst thing about being a freelancer is dealing with all of the distractions.   Summer time is a major case in point. [Read more…]

Take a day off? Surely you jest!

Right now, I’m in the middle of preparing for a retirement party for my Mom to take place this Sunday. My siblings are coming into town beginning tonight and we’ll be entertaining until Sunday evening. Because I don’t see my three sisters and two brothers often, I can’t tell you how excited as I am. As a writer, I’m screwed. Well…not completely screwed. I’m trying to get lots of work done ahead of time, and I’ll be scrambling to make up for lost time during some early morning blogfests this weekend, but this freelancer knows no weekends off. Putting out the call…

Do you have all of your eggs in one basket?

Do you have all of your eggs in one basket? I used to. Several years ago I worked primarily for one website. When it shut down, I thought I was screwed. Where else would I find such quick and easy work that paid right away? Fortunately, it didn’t take long to find other work and unemployment isn’t a concern at the moment. Since so many of us write for the web, I wonder…what happens if the website no longer needs content or what if it can’t afford to pay writers anymore? While we all hope it doesn’t happen to us, [Read more…]

Do you use a resume?

Up until six or seven months ago, I never had a “writer’s” resume. When applying for gigs I’d send a cover letter along with links or clips so the potential client could see samples of my writing. I never felt a resume was necessary since the cover letter listed all of my places of employment. I’d say I landed one out of every five gigs. Just after I landed the gig with About, I noticed my cover letter was looking a little crowded. I decided to look into a resume. I checked with a few resume writers and some of [Read more…]

How do you deal with uncooperative interview subjects?

Here’s one for the masses, something I’m sure most of us can relate to. What happens when you schedule an interview for an upcoming article and your interview subject is less than cooperative? What if the person is rude, gives one word answers or refuses to answer questions? I once interviewed a woman who only spoke in one word answers: “yes” “no” “sometimes”. The thing is, she’s the one who contacted me about the interview as she felt my readers would benefit from her knowledge. I kept having to ask, “can you expand on that?” or “why do you say [Read more…]

Writing for Clicks, Hits and Revenue (Oh My!)

There’s nothing worse than spending a month writing your heart and soul out and ending up with about fifty cents to show for it. I should know, I was suckered twice. Once several years ago when writing for a popular online web portal that paid per 1000 page views, and once during a brief stint with a blog network offering only 40% of the revenue. Never again. I think it’s one thing to work for free. You know exactly what you’re getting – nothing. When you work for clicks, hits or revenue, each month is a surprise. Many writers work [Read more…]

How do you deal with work at home loneliness?

When I worked in corporate America, I didn’t adapt to office life easily. In fact, I hated it. I hated wearing stocking every day, I hated the office gossip, I hated meetings, filing, answering to my superiors and missing out on beautiful days. I hated the commute and I especially hated the politics. Believe me when I tell you I don’t miss working in an office at all. When I found out I was pregnant and my husband and I made the decision for me to try and work at home while our son was so young, almost everyone I [Read more…]

Should Writers Have Blogs?

I started this blog in May 2005 as a way to share with a few friends and stay at home moms, and also to contribute something to Writer’s Row, which I founded along with several other great content writers. I was new to blogging and didn’t know much about it. I had attempted websites on more than one occasion and they just didn’t seem to work out for me. I think the reason people responded more to my blog than my past websites is because I’m able to inject more personality here. In any event, this blogging thing really took [Read more…]
