Dear Deb, I’m starting to look forward to your “We Get Letters” post. I have to ask though, are all of these emails real? I can’t believe people can be so nasty…or so dumb. Thanks for all you do, Joyce Hi Joyce, Yup. They’re real. I post some of the bad ones because I think it’s important for the trolls to see how they look to others. I know some people get keyboard courage when they thin they’re anonymous. The only thing is, you’re not as anonymous as you think you are. Thanks, Deb Hey Deb, How do I advertise [Read more…]

The Decision Not to Freelance
We’re always talking about the decision to leave our day jobs for good to enter the wonderful, boss-free world of freelancing. Most of us believe it to be the best decision ever. While I still stand by that, I’d like to talk about the other side of the coin, the decision to go back to full time work. I’m fortunate. I been able to make a decent living as a freelance writer and blogger. It’s the ideal life –I can make my own hours and be home with my son, plus it keeps me away from those dreaded office jobs. My biggest time waster
So today as I’m writing up my latest article for About Weblogs, I started doing a little research. That took me off on a tangent and the next thing I know, it’s 90 minutes later and the school bus is outside honking. It wasn’t a wasted effort as I was mostly catching up on a favorite problogger’s blog, but still, 90 minutes. I’m easily distracted. I was thinking back to the early 90′s when I first started working as an editorial assistant. Only a couple of the office computers were hooked up then, and I wasn’t one of the privy. [Read more…]
For the first time ever…
Guys, I’m not big on comment moderation or public smackdowns but things are getting out of hand. I enjoy watching you interact especially when a discussion spawns respectful disagreement and debate. Lately, some people have been crossing the line. As a result, I’m closing the August 24th post regarding Laray Carr for commenting. I also deleted some hurtful remarks. Really guys, there’s no reason to call names and wish horrible things on people who are just coming here to offer information. If you can’t show each and every poster the respect he or she deserves, regardless of whether or not [Read more…]

How to handle a deadbeat client
So. You wrote a great piece, sent it to your client and he thanked you for a job well done before placing it on his website. You sent in your invoice and waited eagerly for the payment to hit your Paypal or the check to come in the mail and nothing. You emailed your client and received no response. Thirty days pass and still nothing. What do you do? First check the terms of your contract or agreement. When were you to be paid? We get letters
Dear Deb, I think you’re a hypacrite. Your always tell us not to sell ourselves short but blogging jobs don’t pay much. I think you talk out of you’re a**. Dear Nameless, What clever prose. What eloquent writing style. I can see why you must be a highly paid and in demand writer! I think I already explained why I find blogging gigs to be a different entity. The work is quicker and less researched. A blog post can consist of a sentence, a paragraph, an image, or a whole page. Plus many blogging networks offer traffic bonuses which help [Read more…]
When Should You Write for Free
A couple of years ago, a friend asked me a favor. His corporation was holding a golf tournament to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Would I mind writing the copy for the brochure? He was willing to pay my going rate, but as he was a friend I told him he could have a discount. After researching the tournament and reading all the information from Habitat for Humanity, I learned of all the major corporations and individuals donating time or goods to this worthy cause. How could I possibly charge money? I wrote the copy and told my friend it was [Read more…]

How much attention do you pay to your health?
Ryan Caldwell at Performancing posted an excellent piece this morning, 23 Simple Health Tips for Bloggers. Though his advice is geared towards those who blog for a living, freelance writers can take note as well. My struggle with baby weight is well known – my biggest issue is finding the time to keep in shape. How hard can it be? Friends and family don’t understand it – I’m home all day, why can’t I lose weight? It’s really not that simple. Let’s forget for a minute that when you’re home all day the refrigerator beckons. Let’s forget that my job [Read more…]

Tidbits…
My sister sent me this fun link. It’s from author Meg Cabot’s blog and features foreign covers for her books. Some of them are downright hysterial. Also, Ahmed Bial, my colleague at Performancing, asked me to put out the word regarding this soccer blogging gig. As of this morning, Katherine Swan is leading our top commenter’s contest with Mariella hot on her tail. Still, it’s anyone’s contest to win at this point. Remember, top commenter gets a $50 gift certificate for Amazon. Don’t forget to send in your freelance/tax questions. I’ll be sending them off to our former CPA this [Read more…]
Do you let interviewees read their articles over?
Sorry for the brief post. It’s my wedding anniversary and I have to get going. Here’s a question from Hayli: Do you always submit magazine articles to interviewees for review pre-pub for accuracy’s sake? In newspapers, of course this NEVER happened. In magazines, I find some publications are OK with me just submitting it for approval by the interviewees, some require it and require the interviewees to sign quote release forms and some take the attitude of “The First Amendment doesn’t require us to do that.” I’m sorry, but I didn’t think the first amendment really applied to magazine features, [Read more…]

Your Turn: Real Names vs. Pen Names
I have a question from one of our beginning regulars. I thought I would post it here so you could all offer your insight and advice. Thanks for helping! Deb Dear Ms. Ng, I’m just starting out in the blogging/freelance world as I was wondering if you suggest using your real name or an alias for projects. I prefer to use my own name on my work, but I fear putting my name in the online world (ID theft). Would using initials be a good way around this? Thank you, Danelle Personally, I use my name for everything. Some people [Read more…]
