I achieved 50K last year, which is why I’m thinking of trying for a little more this year. I write about 1,000 words per hour when I write fiction, so 80K would be only one more hour every day. I think I should be able to do that, although I haven’t decided for sure yet whether I’ll try.

Ah~ good for you. I’m still thinking of what to write. As for me, I don’t think I can handle 80,000 words in one month, so I guess I’ll for 50K and continue it when I get the chance.

I have lots of story ideas. The decision was which one to use. But yes, I know what my novel will be about.

I think I may go for 80,000 words this year, instead of 50,000…

I don’t think you’re being cynical. I think if they make a point to put a big dollar amount in the ad, they are trying to dazzle you so that you won’t notice what you’re really getting. It’s kind of like a guy in a super flashy sport car…

And finally, Mariella and Micah and Ann –

I’m doing NaNoWriMo, too. I can’t wait! I’m more worried about maintaining my usual income this year, though — between my regular work, the online writer’s conference this month, NaNo in November, and my horsey responsibilities, I’m thinking I may need 28 hour days in order to get it all done!

I also looked at that big (sorry HUGE) gig… the amount did catch my eye, but then reading between the lines I just knew it was too good to be true!

I had no luck with one – the person wanted to send a sample for you to rewrite and was going to use that to decide if you were a good fit for the job. Then the college one caught my eye, but deadline of the 21st I think it was and 2,000 summaries at that. At 100 words, that would give you about 20 days to do all 2,000. You’d have to write at least 100 summaries a day (10,000 words) to even get that job done. I wonder if they managed to draw ANYONE into that job.

Nanowrimo is coming up and I’d rather get caught up with other assignments and try to free up some time so that I can do Nano again this year and actually complete it again. Missed out last year because I took on my best friend’s toddler for a month while she trained for a new job.

I assumed that dollar a whack one was a typo.
Alas, no, huh? Oh, well, we are smart enough to walk it. Can anyone imagine writing 2000 stories–or paraphrasing them, or however people do it. That is a lot of typing and some thought might even be required.

To amend my comments, i’m referring to articles that are to be at least 700 words. I don’t have a problem with being paid $25 or $50 for an article that I can whip up in an hour or two. But it does seem that many out there want great writing done but for pennies on the dollar. Imagine telling a mechanic you’ll give him $75 to replace your head gasket (which generally involves taking the entire engine apart), and you’ll see why writers get frustrated

My wife discourages me from a lot of the blogging jobs that pay very little. Usually, if a job offers less than $75 for an article that I will have to spend a LOT of time interviewing, researching, writing and rewriting, I usually pass. Writing is a skilled profession and should be treated as such.

I must be a cynic. Every time I see a bigger than usual dollar amount, I scrutinize the listing to see if it’s too good to be true.

Yeah, sometimes figures can be confusing. LOL. They tend to hook writers with the big number only to find out the breakdown payment per piece is appalling.

I considered that one too but you’re right. When you calculate the total amount of words wanted and tally it up, it’s a lot of writing for not much reward.

I just reviewed the research/writing project. Sounds simple and was interested to see the big dollar amount ($2,500 to $3000).

But they want two THOUSAND 100 to 200 word descriptions of colleges for that price. That’s just over a dollar per 100-200 words! Yuck!
