Does it grate on anyone else’s nerves when people confuse Old English with early Modern English?
Perhaps I just hear it far too often because of the local preacher’s fascination with the King James version of the Bible, and their predictable commentaries on understanding “Old English” in order to be able to read it correctly.
There was a posting for a writer the other day, and now the employer wants me to do some samples for her. Fine, but I have a lot on my plate right now and can’t do them for free. You wouldn’t ask someone in another field for free work to see if they fit your needs, correct? I think an employer should be able to look at your previously published work/clips/non-published samples/whatever and be able to tell, “Hey, this gal meshes with me!” or “Nope. Not for us.” I wrote her back telling her I’d be happy to do the samples for a nominal fee ($12 flat fee, which is nothing for SIX DESCRIPTIONS). I feel weird asking her this, but really, what am I supposed to do?!
Sorry, guys…just venting. Carry on.
S I think you are right on to charge a fee for the samples. Your other work will say if you can do the job or not. Nothing wrong with asking for payment. Nothing.
Thanks for the reassurance, I just feel awkward asking people, but then disappointed with myself if I don’t work up the courage to ask. I did ask, I think she will come through, but we shall see.
I totally agree with you, S.Says. Althought I wish I’ll have the courage to do so too, should the situation arise.
S, you definitely did the right thing. I learned that lesson the hard way.
Update (also posted this on today’s entry): she doesn’t agree with the sample fee.
She said she looks at it as a job interview and she’s never been paid for a job interview.
At least you tried S.
What was your reply to her?
