Dalia:

It's not your age or experience that determines how much your words are worth. It is the marketplace.

Go after paying markets. You are better off writing query letters than free articles. You get paid the same for writing a query letter as you do for a free article, but the query letter actually has the potential to generate paying work.

Mark - Thanks for the advice! Although I think I will need more experience under my belt before making demands on being paid more. I actually am a stranger to hard work, but that doesn't mean I can't try ;)

Shell - That's what I was thinking of! Gaining more experience with a few articles and then try to apply to paying publications :) Researching is at the top of my list right now, so no worries on that. I know it will take a few months to get the hang of things, but I won't give up hope.

Dahlia, since you are just starting out, I think working on that fashion magazine is great, as it will add to your resume and give you the growth to move on to a paying position.

Keep researching opportunities and then see if you can land a good one from the experience you've gained :)

Dahlia:

I have been writing for over a dozen years. For me it is a second job, but I earn the equivalent of 25% of my day job pay through writing. I could go full time, but the day job is still fun.

Here are some pointers:

1. Writing is a trade not a profession. It takes years to master a profession. You can pick up the basics of a trade in six months. Trades take significant skill at the highest levels (consider a master carpenter or plumber), but getting the basics down only takes months. So there is no "right age" or "right experience" to be a writer. (The main reason for the faux-professional patina offered by j-schools is to serve as a filter that the nomenklatura can pass through but the common herd cannot.) And like any other trade, you do not need to be a University grad to be a great writer. (It doesn't hurt -- unless you absorb too much self-importance at college -- but it is not necessary.)

2. The difference between trademen (or tradeswomen) and poseurs is that the tradesmen and women work for money. Poseurs work for "art," or "recognition" or "credentials." Forget the free gigs. Especially forget free gigs that get you "exposure." If you are not getting paid, you are not really a writer. It is not hard to get paying gigs -- if you are persistent. Send queries to people offering money for writing until you get responses -- and keep sending queries. But only send queries to people that are going to PAY you to write. Ignore anything else.

3. Be professional. It is even more important for tradespeople to be professional than professionals. (Those years of training get them some slack.) That means communicate in a businesslike manner. Don't get cutesie in your queries or communications. Leave politics and religion at home (except if you are writing for a political or religious publication). Make sure you get the terms down in writing -- and that everyone understands what is due when. Deliver your work on time. Deliver ahead of time if you can. Reliability is ten times more important than genius to most editors. What good is genius if it leave blank pages in your magazine.

4. Remember you can succeed -- but it takes work. Lots of work. If you are a stranger to hard work . . . better to take a job at a grocery store than to be a freelance writer. You are the one that has to get out of bed every morning and get your words on paper and do it every day -- even on days when the stars do not align.

Thank you so much for your responses everyone, I'm really relieved that even at my age, I'm not alone :)

I am currently writing for an online fashion magazine, but for free. Not that I'm complaining much since I'm just starting, so working with an editor and getting media accreditation to cover events is a plus. Eventually I was hoping to start a blog on fashion but focusing more on the fashion industry itself rather than trends and the top fives of every list imaginable. I also have other interests, but I suppose one step at a time ;)

I will continue to keep watch of this blog for some opportunities and hopefully can make a smooth career transition.

Thank you again for your kind responses :)

Dahlia, I just turned 23 this August, not married and no kids (no pets either). When I was in college, I interned 6 months for a big multi-national plant genetics research institute. I was ready to be a full-time research scientist after graduation but I had a change of heart. Writing called and here I am, nearing 5 months into freelancing. Nothing really to boast about yet. But I'm making it happen. I get to pay the bills and then some.

With regards to choosing a niche, it may come to you in the future. I'm trying to veer my career in the direction of writing for the life sciences. Perhaps you'd like to try your hand on a variety of subjects and choose one in due time. :)

Anyways, I haven't much advice to give seeing as I, myself, am new. Just wanted you to know you have peers (with regards to age and status) among us. :D

Hi Dahlia and welcome :)

I think the main thing right now is to gain some experience in writing, in which you are doing. Also think about your options - I'm not saying juggle too many projects in one go so that you become overburdened, but to seek out opportunities that you feel you can successfully accomplish.

I personally, don't write a blog but do work within the business and creative writing arena. When I first started out I got published in anthologies and then built my experience from thereon.

I eventually won gigs and used my experience to gain future work too. Basically, I researched the writing market and jumped at any good opportunities to expand on my skills and add to my portfolio (or resume).

There are some very low paying gigs out there and even those can seem very fussy but I think you need to look very closely at the advertisement and see if that kind of work will benefit you.

Some people or companies also offer Internship roles which may be of interest but a lot of these are usually based at a publishing house or other business.

Writing is just a part of your day; it's the research that will lead to more opportunities and then your writing skills will win you the project.

If you can, try to get published online and by traditional methods. If you read for example a gardening, cooking, or even a computer magazine you can always try to get some articles or tips published. Or even a community newsletter may welcome some input.

Some companies want to see published samples that relate to a specific industry, in fact, I have found a lot of companies request this or at least several writing samples similar to the topic they are posting.

If you are very knowledgeable on a topic a company advertises about then you stand a good chance, especially if your writing is solid.

Just keep practising and learning as you go along because at the end of the day it is a great learning process that will hopefully lead to great money.

Dahlia,

I am 27, not married, no kids (unless you count pet rabbits -- I sorta do). :-) Before quitting to freelance, I worked as a paralegal, so my background isn't in journalism. But I do ok. I'm not big on magazine writing, because that's not the type of work I enjoy. I do a lot of corporate writing work, some content writing work, some blogging, some creative writing. I know a lot of people insist on having that "niche" but I don't really. My point is, if I can do it anyone can.

I'd say think about all those interests and look for some online writing jobs that are on one of those topics. Or look for websites/online magazines that pay for submissions on topics you'd be interested in writing about. Writing for the web doesn't usually pay as well as writing for print, but it's an easier place to get started. Lots of online publications are more than willing to give new writers a chance. If you want to write for magazines, having a few clips (published samples) from online magazines you've written for always helps, too, so you really can't lose the way I see it.

I'm sure more experienced writers will have more input here.

I’d say think about all those interests and look for some online writing jobs that are on one of those topics. Or look for websites/online magazines that pay for submissions on topics you’d be interested in writing about. Writing for the web doesn’t usually pay as well as writing for print, but it’s an easier place to get started. Lots of online publications are more than willing to give new writers a chance. If you want to write for magazines, having a few clips (published samples) from online magazines you’ve written for always helps, too, so you really can’t lose the way I see it.

I’m sure more experienced writers will have more input here.

Erik,

I'm not pursuing the item above, I literally can't take on any more work right now, though that can change quickly.

But if RE writing is your interest, there may be some opportunity to work together at times. Contact me at spenterprises @ wowway.com if interested. I may not be able to respond til this weekend.

I just wanted to say that the real estate blogging one is MINE! ALL MINE!

Unless the pay isn't much, that is. :-)

Seriously, I've been waiting for one like that.

Question. When a job announce says it is "looking" for new writers or bloggers or such and says nothing sepcifically about what they want, what do you do? I usually send a letter of introduction as well as a sample clip, but that doesn't seem to be getting any bites right now. And when I write and ask for specifics NO ONE writes back. I know they're busy, but it makes me think everyone knows something that I don't...!

I had a question. I actually have very little experience in published writing, but from browsing through a lot of comments, I realized that many of you are married with kids. I don't know if I'm in the right realm of searching for a freelance job. I'm 25 and I've never graduated from University, but that doesn't mean I'm not intelligent. I just figured I should be doing something worthwhile with my life instead of going the beaten path.

Any advice for a newbie like me in the writing field? I've blogged for 6yrs but in journal style. I have a hard time pinpointing what I'd like to cover because I have so many interests it's hard to pick just one.

Thanks!

Melissa,

Go for it. The worst they can do is say no. Zig Ziglar says "He (I'll add she to be politically correct) who gets the most no's wins."

I checked out the about.com guide topics and it looks like they've expanded what they have available. I'd be interested in writing two in particular, however, what scares me off is the "published expert in the field" aspect of the requirements.

I've got a strong background in these topics, but as far as published writing, not so much. Is it worth it to give it a go, or have you found that not being a professional/published expert almost guarantees rejection?

First time poster, but I just discovered your site yesterday. Thank you so much for making this site, it makes hunting for writing/blogging jobs so much easier! I also had no idea that online writing could earn you a living. You've given me hope that I can make a career change from this than a 9 to 5 job.

Great site and keep up the good work!
