If you’ve been following the different discussions going on here in the past couple of days, you might have come across questions regarding blogging opportunities. These gigs seem to be popping up everywhere.. Many bloggers do very well, some don’t, and others are confused at the different opportunities available. While blogging might not be for everyone, I can attest to it being a lucrative form of income. Blogging for Yourself: Advertising revenue First and foremost, one can begin one’s own blog and play around with various methods of revenue. This isn’t for those seeking instant gratification, however. Bringing in revenue [Read more…]

It’s Still Not Too Late
Oh yes and…
Is it Unprofessional to Write Anywhere But in an Office?
Yesterday, I showed you my humble little work space. In the discussion that followed, “Writing for Dollars” left the following comment: “A topic we discuss over and over again is how we are sick of being offered jobs for pennies and how we want to be taken seriously. “Then we start a thread with people saying they work on a TV tray or at the kitchen table, on the sofa, etc. This does not sound professional at all and if potential clients want to hire a professional, even though you and I know we can write anywhere and under just [Read more…]

Where I Work
Last week, ProBlogger Darren Rowse showed off his work space and encouraged us to do the same. I considered it, but got caught up in the first week of school and catching up on my work and forgot. Then today I saw this post from Ryan at Performancing, also encouraging us to show our workspaces. So I got out my digital camera. Welcome to blog central. This is where I work. A few weeks ago it was nothing more than a room filled with old toys and other storage. I alternated working between a corner of my kitchen table and [Read more…]
Forgive me while I go off topic – A post about 9/11
I’m not a person who brings things like politics or religion into my blogs. That’s not what they’re there for and I believe everyone is passionate in their views, no need to force my way of thinking on anyone else. While this post is off topic, and doesn’t really have anything to do with either, I do hope you’ll forgive me if I veer of course a bit. Six years ago, September 11th was a Tuesday too. As I exited the subway in TriBeCa and walked to my job, I remember looking up at the Twin Towers and remarking to [Read more…]

These are the jobs I won’t post
Almost every day I receive an email or two asking me to run an ad for a gig. I turn away about 95% of the people who make this request. Why? Because I feel their ads are trying to get over or they’re insulting to the writer. Here are why these ads don’t make the cut: They want free samples – As far as I’m concerned, attached clips show off a writer’s style. If a potential client can’t recognize your talent from your provided samples, he’s welcome to ask you to audition, but he’ll have to pay. They want you [Read more…]

Unsubscribing from Comments
Hi, A couple of you have written to me regarding unsubscribing from comments. In a perfect world, you’d be able to check or uncheck the proper box, but my blog is still experiencing growing pains. There’s some sort of glitch with one of the plugins and Ajay, the guy who keeps things running around here, is looking into it. I’ll let you know as soon as it’s fixed. I appreciate your patience for another day or so. Incidentally this weekend is Ajay’s birthday – Happy Birthday Ajay, and many happy returns. – Deb
Spotting Scammers – and not jumping the gun until you’re sure
If you’re a regular to FWJ, you’re probably aware of the whole Laray –Carr controversy. While I’m so happy to see everyone posting their concerns and thoughts regarding Laray Carr, let’s get one thing perfectly clear, we don’t know they’re a scam. They do however, raise some red flags, which means it’s a good idea to proceed with caution. Some scams are easy to spot, while others aren’t so obvious. Let’s talk about some ways to spot scams, and also jobs of a questionable nature: Generic email addresses – Business owners don’t and shouldn’t use a gmail, yahoo, hotmail or [Read more…]
