I wonder if anyone writing for About.com can answer a question for me. I’ve noticed many of the health related sites have been open for quite some time. I also see that they want medical professionals for them. Is this essential?

For example, I keep thinking about applying for the headaches/migraine site since I have been suffering from migraines for almost all of my 30+ years. I have no medical training or “expertise”. Would I be wasting my time by applying?

I’ve also considered the chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia site as I suffer from both of those as well. Once again, not a medical professional, but I have done tons of research and constantly read up on the latest information.

I rarely post here but I find this to be a great source of information. I appreciate any insight that you all may have.

    Thanks!:)

Deb – You are truly the woman! No one gets leads like you. Lots of non-Craigslist job too, don’t know how you find them all. Thanks – you’re really the best.

  3. Mariella says:

Kathleen> I also actually want to ask the same question. I am afflicted with PCOS and could write extensively on the subject. I DO have a science background since I specialize on health and science topics and I had graduated with a degree on Biology. But the requirements clearly state they want someone with a healthcare profession background. I would also want to know whether I’d be wasting my time sending an application.

    Mariella and Kathleen–
I guess the best thing for you to do is apply. All they can do is say “no.” BTW, I am not a guide at About.com…I’m waiting for an area of my expertise to become available. I’ve wondered about the long time openings as well. IMO, someone who has 30+ years of experience & has done a lot of research would be very knowledgable about the topic. Good luck to both of you if you decide to apply!

    Kathleen,

Have you found anything non-medical (e.g., exercise, avoiding certain foods) that helps/

I have a teen with migraine-related symptoms and medical treatments have not helped at all. For her it’s more of a nagging problem than a serious one.

    Thanks in advance

(by the way, we’ve already checked WebMD).

    Phil>

For my migraines I get a certain amount of relief from peppermint tea and from a product called Natural Calm. Basically, it is a magnesium supplement that is dissolved in water. You drink it like a hot tea (it isn’t very tastey however). It amazes me how well it works. :)

Exercise may help but I personally am limited because of my fibro. Foods like lunch meat, processed foods and red wine can trigger a migraine. Hopefully your teen isn’t drinking red wine, but it really hits me like a ton of bricks. Which is unfortunate since I really enjoy it, but it isn’t worth the pain.

Oddly, the weather is a big trigger as well. We have been getting alot of rain here in the Keys and at times I wish someone would shoot me and put me out of my misery.

I’ve always had migraines and often was sent home from school because of them. My parents would get mad at me for it. Your teen is lucky to have a parent who takes it seriously.

I could go on and on, but I guess this isn’t the place for that. :) Hopefully I was some help though.

    Phil,
I have had migraines and the only thing that worked well was acupuncture. I was skeptical and terrified of needles, but I was having migraines lasting days with only a day of relief in between. I was given some very strong pain pills, but nothing worked. After 3 treatments I did not have a migraine again for over 6 months, and even now I only have minor ones every few months (I only had 3 treatments!)
Just make sure if you decide to try acupuncture, see what kind of qualification the person has. Mine had many with several taking months to get. Some only attend class a few days and claim they can do it.

    Kathleen and Mariella…

I have read through those postings for About.com guides as well. While most of them ask for a medical professional, don’t they also say that all content will be reviewed by medical professionals (or am I thinking of another site?).

Apply anyhow and the worst that happens is they will say no. The application itself wouldn’t take much time to fill out…I’m thinking of applying for a different area that doesn’t require professional expertise though…

    Good luck!

  10. Mariella says:

@del> thank you for the advice and the good luck! ♥

@Malea>> Thanks so much too. :) I was also checking their list out to look for something which doesn’t require professional expertise. I even wondered if it will be possible to suggest a topic that’s not listed yet which I am an expert in!

  11. Phil says:

    thanks Kathleen and Amy.

Being a typical teen, she doesn’t listen to me..I’ve tried to advise her against processed foods, but she’ll buy them on her own anyway. However, the peppermint tea may be worth a shot.

The acupuncture would be a little extreme for her, she only gets minor, short, diorienting shivers, rather than long headaches. Neurologist has done several (expensive) tests and has determined these are migraine related. Don’t notice a weather difference, but they are certainly more prevalent when she’s under stress (severe drop-off in summer when school is out).

Again, it’s more nagging than severe, but I’d like to do something so that she helps herself.

    Thanks again.

In response to the questions about health sites on About.com, I was accepted into the training for the PCOS site and I am not a medical professional. However, I did withdraw from the training because I felt it was incredibly unclear. I’ve had an easier time reading through tax regulations than the About.com training regulations, especially since there were times when the requirements were highly contradictory and my training “supervisor” was not at all helpful in answering my questions.

Also be warned that everything is read and approved (or not) by a doctor before being posted and I quickly was disappointed to find out in the training that this meant a lot of alternative remedies were discounted.

I was also accepted to train for another About.com site but it clashed with travel plans.

The training period is quite a lot of work and unless accepted to be the fulltime writer, you won’t get paid for that time.

    Hi,

As you know, I’m About.com’s Guide to Weblogs. If you feel you’re an expert, do apply but since you’ll be dispensing advice they may want a someone with a medical background. It never hurts to apply.

To be honest, many people felt Prep was grueling, I really didn’t think it was so bad. I was able to keep up and keep up with my regular workload – and I got the gig to boot. I didn’t spend more than an hour or two each day on prep, either.

In any event, I found this to be a great opportunity. The pay is good and it opened a lot of doors. For anyone who wants to try out, I say go for it.

  14. Mariella says:

Fiona>> Thank you so much for the information, I’ve really been very keen on trying out for the PCOS site. It’s good to hear even those without professional medical backgrounds have a chance. Though I do agree that it’s quite disappointing that alternative remedies would not get approved.

Deb>> Thank you so much for the encouragement. ♥ I will try out, I think, but not for the PCOS post anymore. It’s the first time I’ve visited the list of topics and two have opened up which are in the area of my expertise. I was actually pleasantly surprised. :)

I’ll update you guys on whatever happens — even if I don’t even pass the initial screening :p

  15. Mariella says:

I mean, it’s the first time I’ve visited the list of topics in a LONG TIME…haha~ Working overtime for two weeks straight really gets to you sometimes…lol

  16. Kathleen says:

I may just go for it too. I think I will wait a couple of weeks to see if I get accepted for Consumer Research though. One at a time. :)

I also decided to start a blog about chronic pain in general. I have been wanting to start a blog for a long time but have had trouble deciding what to write about. I seem to be an unfortunate expert on pain, so it seems to be a good topic for me.

    Phil>
I forgot to mention another thing that helps my pain considerably. Massage of the neck and shoulder. Not a wimpy massage either, but really work the muscles even if they feel sore. I actually can feel the blood flow and usually feel alot better. Wish it worked with the rest of my body. :)

Thanks everyone for their input! It is greatly appreciated.

  17. Kathleen says:

Ok, I lied. I went ahead and applied for the Headache/Migraine guide position. I’m not very good at waiting. :) I’ll let everyone know how it goes.

  18. Tracy says:

Kathleen – I have fibro to and was thinking about applying to he About.com for the same thing. I am a personal trainer and have been dealing with that issue for myself as well as some clients…I think I am am going to go for it too :)

Deb – Thanks again to you for your hard work and insight !

  19. Nicole says:

Do you get a confirmation email when you apply? They said that you would. I am a history teacher and applied for the 19th century history topic, and haven’t heard a thing. Anyone with experience?

  20. Kathleen says:

I didn’t get a confirmation. Maybe it takes a while.

    Tracy>
You sound like you will have much better credentials than I do. I think I fall in the category of “jack of all trades and master of none”. I have done a great deal of research on alot of things, but nothing to show that I am an “expert”. :)

  21. Mary Ann says:

Did anyone else apply for the Obsessesed with Television blog? He emailed me back and said it was Adsense revenue sharing and the chance to make a name for yourself. He requested samples as well. I replied requesting info on payment for samples and more information about the stipend mentioned in the ad. I haven’t received a response. Just wondering if anyone else knew anything about it.
