My friend and colleague at Writer’s Row, Ann MacDonald is also managing editor for LoveToKnow. Ann hires many writers and sees dozens of applications, resumes and cover letters each week. Ann has also graciously agreed to answer our questions regarding what editors look for in cover letters, applications, resumes, samples, etc. We need to act fast for this Q&A, however. Ann will be unavailable to us after November 1st. Please send questions to deborahng(at)gmail(dot)com within the next week and Ann will be happy to shed some light on our many questions.

    Hi Ms MacDonald,
I was wondering what someone who is new to freelancing should do to get writing jobs? I don’t have a lot of clips and the ones I do have are not print clips. Some of them are from PR work and others are from online newsletters. I’ve also started an online blog to showcase my step into the writing life, but it is very new. Should I write something new to showcase my work and send it to prospective employers or send them the above documents in word format? How do I get people to consider me? Also how important is a resume when applying for a freelance job? Some writers have told me not at all and others say very. Thank you for your time and the benefit of your experience. I hope you will consider some new freelancers when hiring.
