Ajay’s making a few tweaks for me today, so please bear with the wonkiness. Thanks, Ajay.

Why I’m thankful

deer.JPG

I was thinking about Thanksgiving today. Not necessarily about turkey and mashed potatoes, but more about how each year life gets better and better.  I don’t want to bore you too much, but here are a few things I’m thankful for this year. (Don’t worry, they’re (mostly) all on topic) I’m thankful I can do what I love every day. I get to wake up, get dressed (or not), walk five feet to my home office and write about topics I love. I’m thankful I no longer have weekly team meetings. The memories still traumatize. I’m thankful for [Read more…]

We Get Letters…

To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I should continue to post weekly letters. My poll tells me you really don’t like reading the reader mail, yet I received a flood of emails requesting I continue because it’s one of your favorite reasons to visit. I’ll just throw this out there and see what happens. I usually get one or two letters a month regarding my last name and heritage. The past couple of weeks sent a storm of emails asking how I pronounce my name, where I was born and what dialect I speak. So here it is for [Read more…]

Seeking Blog Ghostwriter

SEEKING BLOG GHOSTWRITER Description I am the owner of an internet-based resume writing service and I am searching for a writer to ghost write blog posts for me. My blog has really been a boring read of articles with very few genuine blog posts. I really just do not have the time/energy/oomph to devote to the project but I feel that maintaining a blog would be a great addition to my web presence. Qualified applicants will have excellent writing skills, are native English speakers, and will have experience writing for the web. You should be able to proofread your own [Read more…]

Which job is best… blogging or other types of freelance writing?

by Jennifer Chait I’m occasionally asked the question above. My short answer would be that blogging is the best job in town. However, it’s not a general question. I can only give an opinion based on my experience which is… I started out writing business copy, moved on to querying magazines, and somewhere along the way took a paid blogging job and got hooked. Six months ago I decided to blog full time and I quit querying other work. Now I have one ongoing article project and the rest of my income is blog related. To give you an idea [Read more…]

How To Obtain Freelance Writing Ideas

by Steve Amoia One of the benefits of freelance writing is that the need and audience for quality articles is very diverse. With the advent of the Internet, along with the growth of personal and commercial web sites, the need arises for content that focuses on a target audience. Whether that audience is local or global. As with all writing, quality is better than quantity. In this article, I will discuss five prospective methods to obtain ideas for your future works: Specialization, previous work experiences, generalization, awareness, and an article archive.

Your Turn…

In the past few months, we made quite a few changes here at Freelance Writing Jobs. Many of you have responded in a positive manner to the changes, others have not. I’m very interested to learn what it is you hope to accomplish by visiting my little blog. Bloggers for Hire

When I was at Blog World Expo last week, I had the pleasure of sitting in on Jim Turner and Tris Hussey’s talk about hiring bloggers – and working as a problogger. Both Jim and Tris are with One by One Media and Bloggers for Hire. Both businesses are geared toward matching probloggers with businesses looking to hire bloggers. Jim tells me he especially has a need for bloggers in the personal finance area (personal banking, finance, mortgage…all that fun stuff). If you’d like to see if there’s a match for you, feel free to contact Jim Turner at jturner@onebyonemedia.com. [Read more…]

Thanks Freelance Switch!

So I got a nice note from Kristen over at Freelance Switch, which, as you all know, I consider an awesome resource. Anyway, Kristen gave FWJ – especially our cover letter clinic – a very nice plug in their podcast.  The site and the podcasts have a little something of interest to all freelancers and I recommend you give them a whirl. Here’s a link – Freelance Switch podcast number 4 -  we’re up at about 32 minutes, but if you can give the whole thing a listen. It’s a great resource.

11 Tips for Building a Community

The difference between a blog and a traditional website is that blogs are about community. They’re about carrying on an open-ended conversation and making it about the readers. My blog isn’t for me as much as it is for you. I think the key to having a successful community is to give your visitors something to talk about and let them know their input is valued and appreciated. Here are my tips for building a community. Keep the conversation open – Give your readers a reason to respond. Listen to your readers – Why do they visit your blog? What [Read more…]

Unnecessary Quotation Marks

You know, these have always been a pet peeve of mine. When I lived in Queens I was forever seeing signs on store fronts with quotations marks that just had no business being there. This is my new favorite stop, the Blog of Unnecessary Quotation Marks. I only regret not thinking of it first.

The 3 Secrets to Becoming a Fantastic Writer

I found this on YouTube a little while back and wanted to show it to you here. I’m not sure I agree with this all, though it is good advice. Except the part where he and she are verbs. Check your English manual again, dude.

7 Babes – A – Blogging

Sometimes I just want to write about things having nothing to do with my “niches.” It’s hard straying off topic though. No one who visits me at About Weblogs or Celebrity Cowboy wants to hear about how my master bath has been gutted for five years or that my cats like to go fishing in our aquarium. I know of a few other great bloggers who felt the same way. Jennifer Chait, Gayla McCord, Julie Bonner, Liberty Kontranowski and Marye Audet, along with yours truly, started a new blog – 7 Babes a Blogging. Though we can blog about anything [Read more…]

Finding Freelance Writing Jobs: Where Do I Begin?

logan.JPG

This post is a clue in Performancing’s Treasure Hunt series. So I’m going through all the mail from the past week, and it isn’t pretty. I have over a thousand emails stacked up and the answering is going a bit slow. Since a bulk of the mail is from aspiring freelance writers asking where to begin finding freelance writing jobs, I’m thinking I can tackle the lot of you in one fell swoop. Where do I begin? Here’s the thing. I get so much mail from people who wake up one day and say, “I want to work from home. [Read more…]
