Wow lots of people quitting blogs -- often it seems the person behind this is a bad editor. I should have also noted that it helps to work for someone who has blogged before. Most of my worst clients have been people who think that a blog sounds good but they've never really blogged so they run the blog like a magazine or think posts should be mini articles.

Perfect timing! I was just having some issues with what is actually my first paid blogging gig (I have other paid writing gigs, just no blogging ones) - I didn't get paid at all for the first 6 weeks and when I sent a polite "hey, what's going on, is there some kind of problem with my account information" email, the blog owner turned all nasty with me. I finally did get paid (for the posts she chose to run), but the last straw was when she send an email to me and her other paid blogger praising him and ripping me - constructive criticism I can take, but not in an email cc'ed to someone else, that's really rude. I was too upset to post last week, and now I see that she's already relisted my position today on this blog! Well, good luck to someone else. There's only so much dirt I'm willing to eat for $20 a week.

I was feeling a little bad about this, though, until I read the above article. I can say "yes" to every single point except the one about loving your topic but not knowing enough about it. I didn't love the topic, not at all. I'd still be interested in a blogging gig in the future, even a low-paying one, but one with a decent human being for an owner and, if I'm really lucky, a topic that is of some interest.

Very detailed, excellent article Jennifer. Even if you agree with all of the well-laid out points you express here, it can STILL be hard to actually let go of it though.

BUT, if you do decide to close it down, there's a way to do it so that your readers don't feel gipped, as I wrote in the article, How to Know When It's Time to Shut Down Your Blog (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/223706/how_to_know_when_its_time_to_shut_down.html?page=2).

Once again, excellent insight. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Jennifer... some really great, helpful points here. I also recently dropped a blog for many of these reasons -- payout wasn't worth my time, payments were late, editor was pretty unresponsive and it drove me crazy. Given all of the things I disliked, it was still hard to let go, but I'm better off now without it.

Jennifer,

I completely agree with you in terms of editor intervention. At the beginning of my blogging experience, I signed on with a blogging network to write about a topic I love. This particular niche network was led by an editor who thought she was God. I wrote one post, which she edited slightly, but her edits were terrible. I didn't want my name associated with the edits, so I quit immediately before the post went live. Now, I avoid all blogging jobs where an "editor" has the ability to change my writing.

Sounds like you made the right decision with letting that blogging job go.

Deb ~ I know :)

Amanda ~ It's really easy to set blogs aside -- especially the unpaid ones. The blogsphere is so overcrowded though. It doesn't make sense to have a bunch of dead blogs around. I hope your one veggie blog is successful though; that's a great topic.

Teresa ~ Good luck with your decision :)

I'd been toying, ei: creating and then leaving to wither, a handful of vegetarian blogs. I'm a strict vegan, and so of course I think that having a blog on being vegan or vegetarian is a natural match, but I just never seem to "find" the time to keep up with any of them.

Finally I deleted a bunch of them and one of my 2008 resolutions is to concentrate on making one of them successful. It's so easy to constantly nudge those boring blogs aside and conveniently run out of time each day so that posting isn't possible.
