Getting Back in Google's Good Graces

Recently I told you about how I had my Adsense account yanked from this blog, resulting in an 80% loss of income. As you can imagine, losing this much income at the same time we had to switch to a new server (a big and unexpected payment) almost devastated us. But I’m not writing this to give depressing news. I’m writing this to offer light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. I know of many bloggers who lost Adsense to their blogs for various reasons and thought there was no chance in ever getting back in Google’s good graces. [Read more…]

Don't Confuse Holiday Down Time with the Current Economy

You’ve probably noticed slim pickings these past few weeks. Everyone looking for work are reporting dismal findings. In fact, I receive many letters each day asking if this is a result of the current economy. My answer is “maybe not. Don’t get me wrong, times are going to be a little bit tough coming up, but that’s not the main reason you’re not finding any work this month. November and December are traditionally slow months because folks don’t want to hire during the holidays. They don’t want to spend money on writers during that time. Indeed we’re experiencing tough economic [Read more…]

Monday Markets for December 29, 2008

This is our last Monday Markets column for 2008, and tonight I’m not going to stick to a specific niche. I have a magazine for homeschoolers, one of interest to parents and kids, and one for people who like to brew their own beer. Home Education Magazine From the Web Site: Home Education Magazine is an award-winning publication for homeschooling families, or for anyone who enjoys living and learning.-* If you’re not familiar with homeschooling, please study our publication before submitting. If you are familiar with homeschooling, you might want to study it anyway, as our primary focus is unschooling, [Read more…]

Freelance Writing: Working Without a Net

I’ve been asked more than once how I deal with the lack of security that goes along with working as a freelance writer. Since I’ve started freelancing, I’ve come to understand why actors and other creative types are said to be insecure. You are only as good as your last performance (gig), and there are no guarantees that you will get another assignment. Talk about working without a net! At the same time, I feel more secure as a self-employed freelancer than I did when I was working for someone else. Why? It’s quite simple, really. When I work for [Read more…]

Let's Talk About Why You Really Want to Work at Home

by Deborah Ng One of the reasons I changed the FWJ logo from the pajama blogging lady to the coffee cup is because I was getting a little tired of the assumption that folks who work at home are a little lazy. It’s assumed that it’s too much trouble for those of us who work at home to change out of our sleep clothes. It’s assumed that those of us who work at home do so because we don’t want to work a “real” job or “real” hours. It’s assumed that those of us who work at home do so [Read more…]

Press Releases – Where to Find Work

By Terreece M. Clarke A few weeks ago I wrote about the fundamentals of a press release. Among the questions I received the most popular was, of course, “Where do I find clients?” The good news is there are a lot of clients out there. The bad news is, you are going to have to contact most of them to get the work. While there are some companies and organizations that will advertise a need for press release writers through Craigslist.Org & FWJ, many often do not. So which organizations should you approach? Non-profits – Many non-profits, including local branches [Read more…]

Scope Creep: Whose Fault Is It?

Scope creep. It’s the dreaded bane of every freelancer. If you’ve never had the scope of a project start to creep on you, though, you may not be aware of it happening because of its subtle foot-in-the-door manner of sneaking in. Worse, you may not realize how much scope creep can affect your life. Before you know it, you’ve spent more hours on a project than you should, there seems to be no end to the work in sight, and the client comes back with yet another request. It’s almost enough to make you want to cry.

Help Spread the Word: This Scammer Has Nothing to Do with FWJ

This website has stolen FWJ’s logo, title and more to send folks to Get A Freelancer, which has been known to scam writers out of a lot of money. Please help me spread the word that the above linked blog is not a part of FWJ, not affiliated with FWJ and we do not approve in the least. Very uncool people.

Ok…Now I'm a Little Angry

Unoriginality bores me. Except when someone steals my blog’s title, logo and more. Check out this poor copy of the FWJ website. It’s using FWJ to send people to Get-a -Freelancer. Please help me spread the word that these scammers are in no way affiliated with FWJ. thanks

Merry Christmas Bloggers!

If you’re around to read this, I wish you and yours a wonderfully merry, safe, and relaxing day. That said, honestly people – get off the web! It’s a holiday. Unplug, go sledding, eat some munchies, and play with the kiddos (or dogs, fish, friends – what have you). I promise, the Internet and all these blogs aren’t going anywhere. Although, with my luck, watch; the Internet will vanish today and everyone will say, “HA!” Let’s hope not. Cheers!

It’s late Tuesday evening and you are checking your feedreader, email and social networking sites one more time before you disappear into a mound of wrapping paper, yummy meals and family fun. An Adsense Cautionary Tale

Many people ask me why I still use Adsense at FWJ. I tell them it’s because, for some reason, this blog network is hard to monetize. I get the best results from Adsense, plain and simple. It makes up for about 74% of the revenue earned here. We’ve tried other forms of advertising but this is the one that brings in the most money here. That’s why when I had my Adsense revoked for FWJ it hit us very hard. I couldn’t figure out why this would happen. We don’t ask for clicks nor do we run ads from a [Read more…]

Would You Rather?

…earn $20,000 more than you earn now and work 10 hours a day at an office job, or would you rather work at home earning what you earned now or less. What is the tipping point where someone makes an offer that you can’t refuse in order to return to a full time job. For me, I have no intention of ever returning to a traditional office job. So it would have to be desperate times for my family (because they always come first) or an offer I totally can’t refuse. What would it take for you? Discuss…
