I agree with Gina. I applied for a job with Sugar Publishing http://www.popsugar.com Do NOT apply for a job with them! They’re on mediabistro.com all the time. They had me do an elaborate project for them, brought me in for an interview, didn’t hire me but did steal my advertising ideas! I will NEVER do that again! They started using my ideas soon after. I had too much writing experience for them anyways, when their sites are really just blogs with advertising. I’m still mad!

@ Robin: (re: Vezeo) I get nervous about ads like that. Requiring me to submit work for no pay at all, just to be considered, strikes me as a way for them to get free content.

Has anyone here any experience with Vezeo?

I’ve seen this quite a bit on some paid blogging sites and I can’t help but think this is a sneaky way to get writers to work for free. What do you think? Is it a legitimate way to screen writers or are these companies taking advantage?

Specifically I’m thinking of “submit three sample blog postings on the topic of our blog” and “pick three products from our website to review” requirements.

@ Dani: Glad to hear the dry spell is over! I must admit I was starting to feel a bit like the bridesmaid who is never a bride – I applied for jobs as I found them and never even got a nibble back. I did finally get one in December that paid my highest per-word rate to date and the client added a bonus when he paid me. That was a very nice way to end 2007!

I have gotten some work from the listings in this blog before but hit a dry spell (you’re too popular for my good! lol). Dry spell is over – I just got a contract from a listing that was on this blog! WOO HOO!

Food/Travel Writers @ Vezeo.com ($25-$100)

This particular website wants to publish reviews of “upscale” restaurants… To eat at these restaurants costs way more than the submission is worth.

Well, I suppose if you happened to already be eating at these places and wanted to make your tip back – it’s a great job!

Ahhh…. the life of the published… the frivolity of the fed…

Just a heads up about the Vezeo opportunity… they’ve been posting all over Craigslist and require every applicant to do a free review for them, which they will post on their site, as part of the application process.
