Dear friends:

I hate to be a bother, but I still do not know how to post a job to your site. Do you charge for doing this? I sent this same message before and I got an email back saying that there is a link on the right hand side of the page, which I had seen before. The content on the link, however, simply tells you what you don't want submitted, it doesn't say how to submit? There is not statement saying, "to submit send an email to..." or "Click on the link below..."or whatever.

There just might be a lot of guys like me who are less persistant, which means you may be missing out on quite a few opportunities.

Thanks all,

This site was an established paying gig, and provided me with a good link for clips, which is perhaps what bothers me most about losing it.

I have decided to write them a polite email, declining their offer, and pointing out that my site has actually sent them more traffic in the past month than they have sent me (true fact!) I am sure something else is right around the corner.

@Kitty - My dabble into blogging was a negative experience like yours. The company had first offered a flat article rate for writing, then changed it to 5% of their commissions. The requirement was that you had to post once a day. After writing for them for a month they upped it to 10 times a week, they started creating "contests" offering prizes to the people who went out and posted links to their blog site the most in one day's time. Then cash bonuses to those who posted links to their blog site were offered. After a second month passed, I still saw no money and quit.

I kept in touch with a few other writers and by three months, only those who were posting content with pictures taken from news sites, videos from YouTube or the major network television stations were receiving payment. In the end, I've yet to hear from anyone that actually got paid by the company, so I'm glad I dumped them when I did.

@ Jenny: Always glad to post something for my fellow Canadians! :D

@ Kitty: Not sure whether this is typical in the world of blogging but I wouldn't recommend working for free for anyone.

Dear Deb & Jodee,

I am new to freelance writing in this year. Please tell me if this is an all too familiar situation:

One of my regular blogging gigs, which included a link back to my own site, has just informed me that they are no longer paying any of their bloggers, but wish me to stay on for free. They made comparison to the Huffington Post model of business, even though the traffic I receive from the site in question is probably less than 1% of my daily traffic. The implication was that I should be thrilled to just be able to blog for them. Funnily, I had agreed to a low pay rate from them initially, because of the promise of traffic, which never came.

Is this all typical in the world of bloggers for hire? I am torn between telling them what I think of them, graciously declining, and feeling a bit depressed over losing a gig.
