First time poster but long time lurker here :)

I really like this article. I'm new to the freelance writing industry (3-4 months) and being an Asian writer (Philippines), most employers just don't give us decent rates. It's sad because there are a lot of qualified writers out there who aren't native English speakers.

Anyway, I have the same problem as everyone else here. I don't want to accept writing gigs that pay $5 an article but I don't really have any choice. I currently only have 2 employers who pay me $15 and $25 per article but work from them doesn't come often. So I'm forced to take $5 to $6 gigs just to be productive.

Hi,
Thanks for that insight. I was thinking of taking a $4 gig and I have changed my mind.

For sure If I spend 1 hour daily looking for work, I will certainly land a $10-$30 gig in one month.
In any cash I believe I have enough samples already published:http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=James_Abugah
And when you start cheap, you will find it difficult to move upscale.

I think this blog is absolutely right. I started out writing for $15/article (500 words) at DemandStudios. There's no limit, so I make $15-$30/hour essentially. After you have a good portfolio built up (my website is what I give out), then start applying for higher paying technical writing gigs or ebooks, etc.

Your article on how to find the highest paying freelance writing jobs was highly insightful. I have been writing for almost 1 year now, and I don't seem to be landing good paying freelance writing jobs. It is my search of better paying writing jobs that landed me to your site. The highest I have earned so far (and just only twice)is $5 per piece, the regular one is $2 or $2 for 500 words length.

I'm desperate to move up and get better paying freelance writing jobs. You depicted my case when you mentioned working hard and for long hours, just for little amount! I need help!

High Pay vs. Experience

Being new to the freelance scene, I have exhausted all my search engines looking for these elusive high paying writting gigs. I discovered that they all require either clips, samples or a note from God. So I turned to the $2 dollar gigs for something much more valuable, experience. In a weeks time, I have accumulated a folder full of clips and samples submissions. I saved all my critiques and feedback like study notes for a test. Now, I'm ready to take on the bigger fish. I have also worked my way up the payscale.

Where can I find a writing job? Any job? I'll even take the penny a word gig at this point. My goal is to build a portfolio so that I can eventually command a higher rate.

I agree with Shani - while the article was excellent and a positive boost to all writers, seasoned or not, it would have been greatly enhanced by some suggestions of where to go. Internet searching seems to bring to the front a lot of spam-ads; those that want you to pay to get paid. Where are the best places to search for those freelance/project based paid gigs?

Hi Everyone,

I get a quick reading all of these posts. I decided to try my hand at writing as well. God knows I wrote, and read, enough when I went for Political Science major. How I ever had the energy, or desire to do that I don't know, but....this gig has definitely been interesting.
I have done some of the low ball gigs, not really knowing really where to start. I thought that if I did some of these. Get the ball rolling, that I could work up from there.
Through looking at all the posts, for those of you who have obviously done this for a while, where are good places to look online (presuming you don't mind me asking)? I found Helium, which I thought looked interesting. You have the marketplace, where you can submit an article, and the bidder takes the best one...but of course this means you may not be paid for your efforts! They also have a section where you can just write and post your articles. You maintain your copyright over the articles, editors look at them, and if interested they get in contact with you...this seems tedious too, but at least it gets your work out their for everyone to see.

Suggestion for the Newbie?

Yours Truly,

Shani

Internet Research Associates is a serious red flag since they pay $35 for 10 articles which breaks down to $2.50 per article which you can do a lot better. The best way is to line up private regulars because at least the pay goes up more than cheap web content companies.

Awesome post. I'm just starting out as a freelance writer and would love to know where to find those high paying jobs. I keep ending up with those 500 word keyword articles that pay $3.00. Yep call me a sucker. Its written on my forehead in bright red letters! Any advice, directions, etc. would be a great help.

I agree with what you said about "if you're only finding $3 jobs you're looking in the wrong places".

It's scary, but you NEED to simply start looking for higher paying clients - even if that means having less work to do for a little while.

Thank you for this article. I am new to freelancing and have accepted some very low paying jobs. I'm currently working one that pays $.02 per word. I honestly thought this was a good rate until I read your blog. I'm glad I know now, and I will put effort into finding work that pays what I'm really worth! Thank you for the information.

I honestly thought this was a good rate until I read your blog. I’m glad I know now, and I will put effort into finding work that pays what I’m really worth! Thank you for the information.

LOL...June was my first month of freelancing and I made more money (writing 7 articles) in that month than I did as a teacher....as a novice!
I never even considered taking one of those low paying jobs. I did, however, spend hours and hours looking for the two contracts I now have. I have not stopped searching, either, as I do not know how long these jobs will last...contract or no contract!

David,
I'm going in the direction of copywriting as well. I have a PR and marketing background so copywriting comes fairly easily for me. I have a degree in journalism and love writing articles but you're right, I'm finding that copywriting and content for web sites pays more. I've moved into SEO copywriting and marketing. My friend's husband is a copywriter and he gave me a great guide of how much North American copywriters are charging. I realize I'm not charging enough. I belong to a few copywriters boards and I've received a LOT of great information. Freelance writing is a tough gig but we all need to realize our value.

For the people who are taking the $3 gig, please please don't sell yourself short. Also, don't be so desperate that you'll take "anything." It has to do with value. You also need to think about your ROI. Is it worth your time to write for an hour for a measly $3?

I know some people are writing for writing's sake, however most of us are in the "business" of freelance writing and we need to think like business owners and profits. That's what I'm quickly learning (especially from fellow copywriters). Just remember to value yourself and your writing!

Being a freelance writer isn't easy. If it was, everyone would do it. I was a successful writer with one client for two years. When that dried up, I went into a slump and got out of writing for a living. When I decided to jump back in more than 10 years later, I had no recent clips, so I faked it until I did then set up a website broken down into different categories of writing, copy writing, articles, books, TV and film scripts, etc. I took low=paid gigs only if they were in areas where I wanted to build up my resume.

One thing I quickly learned is that most articles for the internet - especially low-paid ones- are not even written for people, just for search engines. That's why they don't care if they're well-written as long as they contain the right key words. I rarely write articles any more, because web site content, e-books and ad copy pays a lot better.

I also made a very happy discovery when I stopped quoting by the hour and switched to $0.20 a word. That way people don't have to worry if I really worked all the hours I billed for or how long it really took me. They know exactly what they are paying for and what it will cost them and I make a lot more. People who would never pay $50 an hour if I quoted by the hour, wind up paying me over $100 an hour with no complaints when I write fast.

As for people unable or unwilling to pay $0.20 a word, that's their problem not mine. If I was writing for fun, I would work on my own projects, not other people's. Just build up your clips and don't be afraid of rejection and keep raising your rates as you get experience and remember it's a job, not a hobby, so deserve to get paid like a professional

> The loss of a decent paycheck was a serious blow to my husband and I.

You mean "...to my husband and me." (You wouldn't say, "...a serious blow to I.") If you're going to be a writer, this is very basic stuff.

This may have nothing to do with this site, but maybe someone can answer this.. Why is a quary letter so important? I mean why are good and great books rejected just because of a letter that does not say the right thing. All books say that the first few words are the thing that gets attention. Agency wants to make money. There are so many publishers out there, that one of them are looking for the material. Why does an agent reject a book because of a quary letter? I am not afraid of rejection, but come on, give me and others a chance..

Oh, by the way, I have Three Novels - Self-Published - that are selling very well...
