Monday Markets (On Tuesday)

Thanks for your understanding. I don’t have much of an appetite but I’m out of bed and that’s a good thing. Best wishes to Jodee’s family for a speedy recovery. Here are your Monday Markets:

The Dollar Stretcher – I made my first sale to the Dollar Stretcher newsletter and website and it gave me the confidence to apply to other places. The editor buys multiple use rights for web and print as the article will usually appear in both. Please note, they only pay for print submissions so do indicate this in when you send in your piece. Payment is .10 cents per word. Their motto is "Living Better….For Less" and articles should reflect this.

How to Submit

- email to editor@stretcher.com. Please indicate hardcopy or online submission in the subject of the email. We need to know whether you expect payment for the article. Neither one of us would be happy if your work was used without payment!
- by mail to The Dollar Stretcher, PO Box 14160, Bradenton FL 34280.

Check the Online Guidelines for more details.

Backpacker Magazine

From the Guidelines Page:

BACKPACKER is a proud sponsor of Leave No Trace (check out our book, Leave No Trace, available from The Mountaineers Press). All articles and photos that appear in the magazine must adhere to Leave No Trace’s ecologically friendly practices. Likewise, we do not promote motorized use in the wilderness or backcountry.

Our readers are knowledgeable and experienced backpackers, therefore we accept only authentic, well-researched, well-crafted stories (see the section on "Accuracy," below). We’re not interested in slavish imitations of stories we’ve already done. As always, you should carefully study several issues of the magazine before submitting a query. The best articles have style, depth, emotional impact, and take-away value for the reader.

Backpacker prefers queries to completed manuscripts. The preference is for emails with attachments over packages sent through the mail. Payment is .60 – $1.00 per word. Please allow 2 to 4 weeks for response.

Complete details at the online guidelines page.

Mothering Magazine

From the Guidelines Page:

Our main objective is to be truly helpful, to provide information that empowers our readers to make changes, and supports them in being their own experts. We like articles that have a strong point of view and come from the heart, that are challenging or evocative. We also take pride in publishing well-researched, extensively documented articles. When submitting this type of article, please use only the most updated research, from primary sources. Our choice of articles depends on the other material we have published on the subject, how new the topic is to us, and how unique the presentation is. It helps if you include photos.

Payment is between $200 and $500 per piece.

Submit to:

E-mail: candacew@mothering.com
Mail: Candace Walsh, Articles Editor, PO Box 1690, Santa Fe, NM 87504
Fax: Candace at 505-986-8335

Please see online guidelines for details and formatting guidelines.

Thanks for the links, Deb! I have a question, however. How should I approach a magazine like Relish who say that their rates “vary” — should I ask for a certain price, or should I just pitch an idea and see what they offer? Likewise, there’s another magazine I was thinking about submitting to, and in their writer’s guidelines they say, “Fees are negotiable and may be discussed with the editor.” I am fairly new to freelancing in general, and completely new to submitting to print markets, so I’m not sure how to proceed — at what point does one discuss the fees, and how should one negotiate them?

Just FYI, Mothering is a fantastic magazine, with extremely well-researched articles, but they have been known to take up to a YEAR to get back to you on queries. Ouch!

Thanks for the markets, Deb! We’re slammed with stomach bug here, too, so I feel you — glad you’re on the mend …

  3. Sue says:

Sonya — Payment is usually discussed after the editor shows interest in the article idea. Also, fees can vary for a publication depending on a number of variables. A front of book piece may pay less than a feature or a freelancer who has done multiple pieces for a publication may get a higher per word rate than a first timer, etc.

  4. Another brilliant markets heads-up, Deb. Thanks! I’m glad you’re starting to feel better and I hope the rest of your family are brightening up too. Rest well.

  5. I’m glad you’re starting to feel better!
