Sonya — Payment is usually discussed after the editor shows interest in the article idea. Also, fees can vary for a publication depending on a number of variables. A front of book piece may pay less than a feature or a freelancer who has done multiple pieces for a publication may get a higher per word rate than a first timer, etc.

Just FYI, Mothering is a fantastic magazine, with extremely well-researched articles, but they have been known to take up to a YEAR to get back to you on queries. Ouch!

Thanks for the links, Deb! I have a question, however. How should I approach a magazine like Relish who say that their rates “vary” — should I ask for a certain price, or should I just pitch an idea and see what they offer? Likewise, there’s another magazine I was thinking about submitting to, and in their writer’s guidelines they say, “Fees are negotiable and may be discussed with the editor.” I am fairly new to freelancing in general, and completely new to submitting to print markets, so I’m not sure how to proceed — at what point does one discuss the fees, and how should one negotiate them?
