Monday Writers Markets

I’m trying a new feature here at Freelance Writing Jobs. I realize most of my posts are in regard to writing for the web, and thought those who write for magazines and print markets might also be interested in learning some great places to pitch. If you like it, I’ll make Monday Markets a regular feature.
Here are a few to get you started:
Highlights for Children: The editors request you read a copy or two before making your pitch. Queries are not accepted via email or fax. Payment is on acceptance and a manuscript is preferred over a query.
Send submissions to
Manuscript Coordinator
Highlights for Children
803 Church Street
Honesdale, PA 18431
Payment ranges from $25 to $150 and up. Please see the online guidelines for more details.
Edit: This just in from one of the regulars: "I work at Highlights, and while it is true that the editors here prefer manuscripts over queries for fiction, they prefer queries over manuscripts for nonfiction. Since we can accept only a small percent of submissions, we prefer to first see queries for nonfiction so that authors don’t have to go through all the work of writing the full manuscript if the topic or approach isn’t right for us."
Thanks Carly!!
Mother Earth News: From the website:
"We welcome articles and quality photographs for two departments: “Country Lore” and “Firsthand Reports from the Field.” “Country Lore” presents handy how-to tips of 100 to 300 words; payment is $25 to $50 per published item. “Firsthand Reports from the Field” are first-person stories (1,500 to 2,000 words) about sustainable lifestyles of all sorts; payment is $150 per published piece.
Most of our feature articles are written by our Contributing Editors. But we also assign articles to freelancer writers, particularly those who have experience with our subject matter (both firsthand experience and writing experience). If you would like to submit a query, please send a short synopsis of the idea and a one-page outline. Also send digital photos, if available."
Please read a copy or two of the magazine before submitting.
Submissions for all of the above should be sent via e-mail to letters@MotherEarthNews.com
See the online guidelines for more information.

Payment varies and kill fees are offered to articles that aren’t used. Please see the online submissions guidelines for more information.

Thanks! I really hope this becomes a regular occurrence.
I like this feature too! Thanks for thinking of us
I like the new section, call me strange but I just like to have my work in print – seems more tangible to non-writers when trying to plug yourself. Keep up the great work – I visit your site several times a week.
@AngryJed – I have to agree except my first print article was messed up. The editor accidentally removed half a line from my final paragraph. As it is a quarterly newspaper, I have to wait until the Spring/Summer issue for a correction so I’m having to explain that the article printing was messed up, not my writing!
Thanks for starting this, Deb. I work in both arenas, and it’s helpful to stay up to date.
I like the idea. Print markets often pay a bit better, though the payment cycle is often a lot longer.
Despite being a member of the generation that was raised on computers, I am still mildly wary of them, and I have a great big ol’ soft spot of printed-on-paper magazines — you can hold them in your hands, and they have an actual, physical, tactile weight. So I like this section a lot! Keep up the great work, Deb.
Great idea! Thanks Deb.
I am just starting to look for freelance jobs and have found this website to be very informative. I did not even realize that there was such a great web of resources available at the touch of a button! Thank you for the information, it is much appreciated.
Great addition! I’ve decided to focus more on print markets this year, so this new feature is perfect timing.
I’m glad to see this feature also. Thanks!
This is wonderful Deb! Thank you so much. I really hope you do this every Monday. This site is an amazing resource already, and this new addition makes it even better.
Excellent addition! Thanks for making a great site even better.
I’m primarily interested in print work, so this is a great addition to your regular offerings! Thanks, Deb!
Great! One of my New Year’s resolutions was to start magazine writing. This will certainly come in handy.
Thanks a whole lot!
I like it! I hope you continue the new feature!
BTW: I read the site all the time, but have never commented before. I want to say thanks for your site. I am new to freelance writing, and have gotten a few paid gigs as a result of your site.
Brava. Love the new feature. Thank you.
I *love* having leads such as these and think it would be great to see them each Monday. What a great way to start the week!
Hi Deb,
What a great after Christmas present. I’ve written for print publications for many years, but often it’s tough finding new markets. I really appreciate your doing this. Also, my resolution for the year is to try to start writing for child-oriented publications, so this is great.
Happy New Year!
Julie E.
Thanks Deb! It’s like you read my mind.
More thanks from a veteran print guy. Most online work I do is for a publisher’s online offering (but they continue to have magazines).
This is a great idea. I wanted to start doing some magazine writing and this will help. Thanks for all the information you provide. It’s helped me get my freelance career going.
Love it! ~Karen
Fabulous idea – love it! Please keep doing in the future.
Hi Deb
I appreciate this feature as I write both for print and online.
Absolutely great idea! Thanks Deb.
Thanks, Deb. This is very helpful. I hope you do this each week.
I was hoping someone would do this. I’m glad it turned out to be you, Deb. I love the way your blog is set up. Thanks so much!
thank you, thank you!!
Deb,
Any chance that the gigs will ultimately primarily be actual gigs or cat-calls from print markets? Otherwise, I already have a list of all the decent magazines out there and their submission guidelines. What about gigs for newsletters, newspaper columnists, and magazine at-home part time editors? I hope to see these on the list.
“ERRICKA Says:
“…What about gigs for newsletters, newspaper columnists, and magazine at-home part time editors? I hope to see these on the list.”
That goes double for me! Submission guidelines are useful, but nothing beats an actual lead.
Duly noted, Erricka and FreddieJaye. I look for leads to all markets rather than simply magazine markets.
Thanks, Deb. I like writing for print and really appreciate the Monday leads. You are my first stop every morning!
That would be fantastic! Thanks, Deb and Jodee!
THANK YOU! I might just camp out here, in excitement
I really like this too. I found my first magazine job on a freelance writing sight and I look here often for opportunities.
Hi,
I’m a freelance mag writer, and I’d like to thank you for adding this section. Love it!
Great idea, I am always looking for new magazine markets to pitch! I love your site so much, it is really the only one I go to any more!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I do most of my writing for magazines and this is just what I need!!!!
