I was going to put a little something in the letters section because the topic of clips comes up often. Since it’s something a lot of people want to know about I thought I’d open it for it’s own discussion instead. What are "clips?" Everyone wants to see clips or samples of your writing. Usually clips refer to published samples, but that’s not always the case. A clip can be a link to a blog post or online article or even an unpublished writing sample. Unless it’s mentioned otherwise, a potential client is more interested in how well you [Read more…]
We Get Letters
Dear Deborah, Can you post this as a topic for discussion. It may seem like a silly, petty thing but it’s been weighing heavily on my mind. I’ve been working for someone for about 18 months now. I must be doing well because I’m still with him. I wish he would say thank you. I never received a bonus or a Christmas card or even a "job well done" from this client. During the holidays we were have a strategy session over the phone and he mentioned how so many of his clients sent gift baskets. Yet he didn’t bother [Read more…]

Should You Worry About Competition When Applying for Freelance Jobs?
Last week when James from the TippyLeaf Tea blog offered his feedback, he made mention of receiving 500 applicants the first day after his ad was placed. This led to some speculation. Does the early bird get the worm? Is there too much competition out there? Personally, I wouldn’t concern myself with either worry. Here’s why. Should you be the first to apply? Does it matter whether you’re the 5th or 500th applicant? No. Not really. Not if the employer is still receiving applications. Some of the regulars wondered whether or not the 300th application stood in the employers mind [Read more…]

Doing Your Research: Learn About Your Client Before Applying for the Gig
Last week an employer who placed an ad here looking for a blogger, provided valuable insight into what an employer is looking for in his applicants. Whether or not you agree with his process for weeding out the applicants, the fact remains James is the one hiring and many others in his position to hire feel the same way. What made an impression on me the most was James’ suggestion that the applicants who sent in their details five minutes after the gig was posted might not have spent enough time researching his website. There were a few in disagreement. [Read more…]

My Blog Client Wish List
~ By Jennifer Chait James, from the tea blog job wrote a post for Deb earlier today about what bloggers / writers should consider before applying to a job. I read it. I highly appreciate that a hiring party would take the time to provide feedback to readers (applicants) – that’s rare and pretty cool. Parts of the post astounded me. Are people really applying for blog gigs, saying, “I love blogs” yet, they don’t actually write for a blog? I can’t wrap my mind around that one. James also noted, “Don’t tell me that you’d never thought of blogging [Read more…]
Off Topic Humor Break in Honor of the First Major Snowstorm in Years
I wrote this piece several years ago to express my frustration at the local news weather reports. I wanted to know how much snow we got, how much was expected, what the schools were doing and what the roads were like. At the time, there was no snow falling even though a great storm was reported. The news reporters looked so silly reporting a snow storm that wasn’t happening. Anyway, take a short break and relive my frustration. We’re expecting the first major storm of the season, which is the lead story on all of the local (NYC) news [Read more…]
Feedback from an Employer: Things to Consider Before Applying for a Gig
Ever wonder what the people who place ads are thinking once the reponses start rolling in? What makes one person reject an application and accept another? James, from the TippyLeaf Tea blog job offered to give some feedback. As you can imagine, I jumped at the chance to let the person who is doing the hiring to offer his thoughts. One thing that stood out for me is where James tells us if you answered five minutes after I posted his job, you probably didn’t take the time to give his website a good look. It’s really important to know [Read more…]

Tips for Building Blog Traffic
After yesterday’s post discussing why freelance writers need blogs, I decided to dust off this piece about increasing blog traffic, and give it a bit of an update. The original version appeared about a year and a half ago at About Weblogs. Tips for Building Blog Traffic Unless you prefer to keep your blog private, you’re probably blogging in hopes of reaching people. Bloggers who are just starting out may find it takes time to get the word out. Promoting a blog isn’t for the shy. If you want to bring in the masses, you’re going to have perform a [Read more…]
Workforce Management NOT Hiring
Hi folks. I’d like to apologize for linking to guidelines (Freelance Writing Jobs from February 8th) from a place that is not hiring freelancers at this time. I received a note from the editor yesterday and she’d like me to pass on to you that she is not hiring freelancers at this time. If my e-mail traffic is any indicator, a lot of freelancers are reading your blog & site. A LOT. While we do have writers’ guidelines on our site, we are not looking for new freelancers right now. In addition to our staff writers, we do have great [Read more…]
