Re: Weather

They kept saying it would dodge us. At 10am, it started sleeting and didn't let up with sleet and freezing rain until last night. My poor trees are dragged to the ground covered in 1/4 to 1/2 of ice. The road crew gave up last night trying to keep the roads de-iced - Vermont ran out of road salt in many areas, so it's been sand and plowing.

Today's a whopping 15 degrees, but at least the sun's out!

@Ann, That's a great story about the man in Wells. People are often very genuinely friendly here, despite the state's reputation!

We're getting all rain today, so perhaps things will look more spring-like soon. I hope it's not too nasty where you are!

@!Lisa- We usually make a yearly trip to Wells or Kennebunkport in late April/early May, so I'm used to the cooler weather. Usually we hit it pretty lucky, but the winters have ended by late March in those years.

Either way, I hate going to Maine in the peak times because it is more crowded and more expensive. My favorite experience ever occured in Wells Beach in late April a few years ago. We'd gone out to dinner with our kids and this single dad with similarly aged kids struck up a conversation. It lead to him asking if he could join us for some adult conversation since he was a little worn out because his wife was out of town. We're chatty people, so my husband and I were happy to chat with a local during a meal and in the end this stranger paid for our dinner. It's little things like that that make me so happy my kids have experienced that not every stranger in the world is someone to fear.

@Ann: May can sometimes be too early to be called "spring" around here! We're just south of Portland, in Scarborough, and we've had to put down comforters on the bed for visitors in June because the temperatures were only in the 40s.

@Lisa - All of New England seems to have had one of those winters for the record books! I can't say I'm thrilled to see more freezing rain (third time in the past ten days), but then the cold front that's supposed to drop the temps to the point of 5 or 10 below - I'm completely sick of winter at this point.

I was actually planning to rent a house in the southern coast region in Maine in early May with my parents and brother, but now we aren't sure we should book that early because winter's come back with a vengeance!

Thanks so much, Deb, there are some good ones here.

Ann G.: I hear you... We have the same feeling about this weekend's weather in Maine!

I was looking at the "hope you have something fun planned" part... Do you count sitting inside and watching the freezing rain drag my trees to the ground again as fun? ;-)

Not going to be much fun happening in VT this weekend!

Deb needs more coffee! Today's the 7th, not the 6th. However, being under deadline today, I like your choice of date much better!

Have a great day Deb!
