To Writing Hermit:

I tried your advice and it takes me to one of those pages that says, "This web page cannot be displayed."

Also, I have to believe that the majority of people who flag an ad because they think it's illegit are flagging out of anger or frustration, maybe because they were turned down, told they didn't have the experience or the right writing skill, etc., versus the payment cited was wrong or the advertiser refused to correct a misleading payment typo. There are a lot of self-righteous people out there who think they can speak for everyone else. It is NOT their job to take an ad away from another applicant for ANY reason. If you think the pay is too low, maybe someone else will take that pay. So if you are a flagger, please, just leave the ads alone.

@ann g: then i would flag it, too. when you set up a craigslist ad, you have the ability to edit it if you make a mistake. if they don't fix the rate, then they're just trying to hook people. i hate that!

I didn't get in to see the ad before it was flagged, but I have been known to flag ads. The reason had nothing to do with the fact that I wanted the job all for myself, it had to do that once I applied, the job poster emailed back and claimed that he'd typoed the rate. One time the 10cents per word that he was offering was really 1cent per word, another time they said that for the first six-months it was no-pay and then if you lasted they would start paying you. Meanwhile, their ad clearly stated $10 an hour-nothing about not offering pay for the first six months. In my opinion, offers like that should be flagged. To automatically assume that someone flagged it in order to get the job isn't always correct.

@Carol:

Here's some info on MetroMix. I did some work for them in a different city (earlier this year)and the rate is very low, with the carrot of "possible features in the future." They paid $5 for each blurb, plus another $5 if you filled out an extensive form regarding the venue's hours, payment methods, etc. 25 reviews were expected each week, and they don't reimburse you for expenses. Unless they've changed their structure, it's very time-consuming and not very lucrative. Best of luck!

@WritingHermit, you are awesome! But I don't think I was able to see the flagged ad. I even tried searching on "cache:http://atlanta.craigslist.org/wri" and "cache:http://atlanta.craigslist.org/wrg" and I couldn't see an ad titled "Freelance Writers." Am I doing something wrong?

Regarding flagged posts on CL: This has driven me crazy, too, but I have found a pretty easy way to deal with it: look up the cached page on Google. As has already been mentioned here, if someone’s ad is flagged, you can generally no longer email their CL email addy. However, if they have another email address listed, you are in the clear. In today’s ad, the poster included a non-CL address, so you should be fine. To look up the ad we are discussing here, type “cache:http://atlanta.craigslist.org” (minus the brackets) into Google. You will be taken into an older CL page. Click on the writing jobs or gigs section and you should be able to see the ad as it appeared before it was flagged. There. Now anyone who is trying to eliminate the competition by flagging posts can no longer do that since we all know how to retrieve the ads. If this is confusing, let me know and I will try to explain a little more clearly.

To anyone trying to get rid of the writing competition so that they can keep the plum jobs for themselves I say “nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah.”

What does everyone think of Ehow.com? Despite their assurance of prompt payment in their ads, I still have not been paid yet and it has been several weeks.

Don't those ads have to be flagged a number of times before they are removed? If one person is flagging it, he or she has WAY too much time on his or her hands.

As for the Writer/Researcher job - I have seen that one posted every couple of months or so on Craiglist.

@Phil: Thanks for putting it in a different perspective. You're absolutely right-- we're looking at only our small universe, versus the whole of what CL is. And it's true that it may have been flagged for good reason.

I think my main beef with the issue is that I wonder how many flags it takes to get an ad removed, and perhaps the number of flags before deletion needs to be upped a bit. Or perhaps have a space to write a reason why something was flagged.

CL must be making a decent amount of money from their paid ads; surely they could afford to hire a few people to look over the ads that are flagged in the jobs area. (Yes, it would be a mundane job, but some people like that.) Somehow I just don't see ads being flagged for no reason in places other than the job-search area.

Who knows? Anyway, what goes around comes around, so if people are flagging perfectly good jobs, it'll bite them in the back eventually. At least we can hope.

I'm going to take the opposite side of part of the discussion.

Anything like CL is set up to have as little human involvement as possible, so they're not going to have the manpower to review flagged items. Remember, we're looking at only our small universe, CL lists much more than writing jobs.

Also, it could have been flagged for legit reasons, though the rate was higher than most, so suspicion is certainly warranted.

On the bright side, there are higher paying opportunities out there, but it takes a lot of diligence to find them.

To Kelli: I haven't had any problems getting into their site. I got in this morning and just checked again without any problems. Not sure what to suggest except checking that your cookies are cleared out and trying to refresh the page?
Good luck!

Regarding the posting for "Cup of Comfort" -
the website cannot be displayed, and has actually been this way for awhile. I was working on an essay for a Cup of Comfort series that had a Feb. 1 deadline. For a couple weeks prior to the deadline, the website was not available. Apparently it is still this way. I tried finding out more about it, but was unsuccessful. Any ideas?

I'm wondering about another job posted here - the metromix ad. She's requesting cover letter, cv, nd clips by email, but no attachments. Sounds like a lot to dump in an email field - am I missing something obvious here?

RE: Craigslist deleting posts due to people flagging them.

I wish CL would at least take a look at an ad after it's been flagged a certain number of times. Then they could determine whether they deemed it flag-worthy or not.

It's not fair that random people can flag a message to the point it gets deleted, with no one "at the top" looking it over before it's deleted from CL entirely.

That's really silly, in my opinion. If CL can't take the time to look over every single post because they're free, then they can at least look over an ad that's been flagged, before deleting it.

Wow, now my interest is piqued on what the removed CL ad said. I'm like Kirsten King - I always thought ads were removed becuz the poster did a "no-no." Reading these comments has taught me to check this site first thing in the morning, and to copy the ads into Word.

@Fiona - I just clicked on the ad you were talking about, and it sounds fishy to me.

In addition to copying ads into Word, you can e-mail an ad to yourself. In the right-hand corner there is an option to "e-mail this posting to a friend."

That will send all the information in the entire ad.

Hope that helps!

Trouble with the copy/paste is that if it's a CL email address, it's deleted once an ad is removed. So unless the poster lists their real email address instead of the cloaked CL one, once the ad's gone so is your chance to apply.

Yeah, it is pretty stupid for craigslist to allow that sort of thing. It just means they are too cheap to sort through them for themselves, but if they are too cheap they should just let the ads stay up.

Kristen, same here. Flagging because of some kind of violation is one thing, but to stop others applying is petty beyond all belief.

I like the copying to Word plan for CL. I'll do that next time I see a real keeper.
