To Writing Hermit:

I tried your advice and it takes me to one of those pages that says, "This web page cannot be displayed."

Also, I have to believe that the majority of people who flag an ad because they think it's illegit are flagging out of anger or frustration, maybe because they were turned down, told they didn't have the experience or the right writing skill, etc., versus the payment cited was wrong or the advertiser refused to correct a misleading payment typo. There are a lot of self-righteous people out there who think they can speak for everyone else. It is NOT their job to take an ad away from another applicant for ANY reason. If you think the pay is too low, maybe someone else will take that pay. So if you are a flagger, please, just leave the ads alone.

@ann g: then i would flag it, too. when you set up a craigslist ad, you have the ability to edit it if you make a mistake. if they don't fix the rate, then they're just trying to hook people. i hate that!

I didn't get in to see the ad before it was flagged, but I have been known to flag ads. The reason had nothing to do with the fact that I wanted the job all for myself, it had to do that once I applied, the job poster emailed back and claimed that he'd typoed the rate. One time the 10cents per word that he was offering was really 1cent per word, another time they said that for the first six-months it was no-pay and then if you lasted they would start paying you. Meanwhile, their ad clearly stated $10 an hour-nothing about not offering pay for the first six months. In my opinion, offers like that should be flagged. To automatically assume that someone flagged it in order to get the job isn't always correct.

@Carol:

Here's some info on MetroMix. I did some work for them in a different city (earlier this year)and the rate is very low, with the carrot of "possible features in the future." They paid $5 for each blurb, plus another $5 if you filled out an extensive form regarding the venue's hours, payment methods, etc. 25 reviews were expected each week, and they don't reimburse you for expenses. Unless they've changed their structure, it's very time-consuming and not very lucrative. Best of luck!

@WritingHermit, you are awesome! But I don't think I was able to see the flagged ad. I even tried searching on "cache:http://atlanta.craigslist.org/wri" and "cache:http://atlanta.craigslist.org/wrg" and I couldn't see an ad titled "Freelance Writers." Am I doing something wrong?

Regarding flagged posts on CL: This has driven me crazy, too, but I have found a pretty easy way to deal with it: look up the cached page on Google. As has already been mentioned here, if someone’s ad is flagged, you can generally no longer email their CL email addy. However, if they have another email address listed, you are in the clear. In today’s ad, the poster included a non-CL address, so you should be fine. To look up the ad we are discussing here, type “cache:http://atlanta.craigslist.org” (minus the brackets) into Google. You will be taken into an older CL page. Click on the writing jobs or gigs section and you should be able to see the ad as it appeared before it was flagged. There. Now anyone who is trying to eliminate the competition by flagging posts can no longer do that since we all know how to retrieve the ads. If this is confusing, let me know and I will try to explain a little more clearly.

To anyone trying to get rid of the writing competition so that they can keep the plum jobs for themselves I say “nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah.”

What does everyone think of Ehow.com? Despite their assurance of prompt payment in their ads, I still have not been paid yet and it has been several weeks.

Don't those ads have to be flagged a number of times before they are removed? If one person is flagging it, he or she has WAY too much time on his or her hands.

As for the Writer/Researcher job - I have seen that one posted every couple of months or so on Craiglist.
