Good morning everyone! It’s Thursday already; I don’t know where this week has gone. I have a few internship opportunities this morning. Some are paid and some are for college credit. As I troll for leads, I have to chuckle a bit at ads that are looking for “talented” or “good” writers. I would think that employers are looking for quality candidates, and I have yet to see an ad looking for untalented, incompetent writers who can’t spell.

Oh, boy. I wish I was a student again. (Or at the very least, someone without a mortgage or a yarn-buying addiction.) I covet that Food & Wine Magazine internship.

I’m with you Christina. I wish I was in Boston right now for that food writing job.
Yes, the ones who emphasize their need for “talent” are usually offering the lowest pay. “Talented, experienced, dedicated writers wanted. Unfortunately, we have a small budget so can only pay $3 per 750-word article, but we can offer plenty of steady, ongoing work. We expect each article should take no longer than 5 minutes for someone who knows what they’re doing.” Not only can I make peanuts, but I can work my life away while doing so?! Oh boy, hold me back.

When I first started Freelance writing a long time ago, I fell for the many sample writing thing. What started was “i will give you a test sample and you write it and we will see. So I did that. Then came the well it was good see if you could do this one and so forth.” After awhile I realized that it was not just a sample but work he was actually getting for free using the term “sample” as a key. *bats self on the head* If I only had known what I know now *laughs*
If you’re willing to work hard and have a creative/marketing mind, Autodemo is a great company to work with. The company does require an initial test that will take a few hours to complete, but if your writing is up to their needs , the pay is good and the people are courteous to work with. (The company also pays invoices within 30 days; I’ve done several jobs for the company and can vouch for that.) The work is strenuous–you need to be able to understand technical lingo and applications as well as write for instruction as well as marketing–so be ready to focus on what you’re doing!
