@Lesley – I started out working for that rate, but it was a topic I knew by heart and didn’t need to research. That tends to be my rule of thumb.

I responded to an ad last Friday and heard back. The guy is starting up a site about antique products and wanted someone to write ad copy, which I have no problem doing. Then he said he was going to pay 25 cents per entry of about 100 words and that he preferred someone who has worked in that field. It was definitely not worth it!

@Lesley – P.S. Having a not-so-happy feeling about someone’s rates is not overreacting, btw. Sending a posse of angry writers armed with sharpened paperclips to their office to “educate them” would be overreacting.

@Lesley – If it seems like too much work for the price, then it’s a low pay rate. Trust your gut, and never accept a price you’re not comfortable with. (And if it reassures you about your initial reaction, I personally would decline that opportunity because, like you said, it’s a lot of work for not much money.)

I responded to one of the job leads listed, and I heard back this morning (the one looking for blog writers and web content writers).

They want keyword-optimized pieces, which are 500 words in length. The pay rate is $5 for each 500 word post. I don’t know if I’m overreacting, but that just feels like a low pay rate to me. Especially since the first posts they’re willing to offer me are about gambling, and that’s going to require some research on my part. Seems like a lot of work for just $5.

Am I simply overreacting, or is this indeed a low pay rate?
