Your website is brilliant. Thanks so much for doing the research for us, I don’t think I have the time to scour the internet for jobs, so thanks!

I’m definitely starting to get a little suspicious of the ad for health and wellness writers offering 25 cents/word. That’s at least the fifth time it’s been posted. Hard to believe that haven’t found anybody suitable yet…
March 19th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
I was beginning to think the same thing.
March 19th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Also about that LiveStrong place (I think that’s what it is). I’ve seen that ad a lot over the last two months, and reposted places like it’s brand new.
Interesting.
March 19th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
For the LiveStrong thing. I have worked with the companies (there are at least 2) that are hiring for it. They each pay decent and one of them pays within 30 days while the other pays within 3 months (depending on publication, etc.)
They are legit and the work is steady, but you have to be willing to adhere to STRICT writing styles and have time to devote to them. They used to require 20 articles a month, but for this job that may be different.
March 19th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Re: the health and wellness writing gig, I found their company name on one of their earlier postings (Your Healthy News). It’s just a 4-page newsletter. Hmm. Now I’m wondering if they’re just taking the writing samples and using them. They’d better not be, because I sent them a relevant sample!
March 19th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Janet: I had the same thing happen last summer. A health magazine asked for relevant samples and said they would pay for them if they liked them. Never heard from them again but I get the feeling they used them anyway. I’m much more careful sending samples now.
March 19th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
I applied for that nutrition newsletter job as well and never heard a darn thing. It is odd that they haven’t found someone yet, especially since they don’t require someone with experience writing about nutrition or even a knowledge of nutrition. hmmm…
March 19th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
I’m not feeling so bad now in that I haven’t heard from the nutrition newsletter job either. I actually have a background in nutrition.
Am wondering if they needed to show increased traffic to their site. An ad like theirs that asks for such broad requirements would surely pull in lots of folks, as it seems to have done.
I hope if it’s a valid need for a writer, someone who comes to this site does get the job. Best of luck to all.
March 19th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Just as an FYI… I responded to two of today’s ads (”Internet Content Writer” and nutrition-oriented “Freelance Writer”) and received a response, “in regards to the job position,” that described processing responses from online ads.
March 19th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
I applied for it and never heard back, but something happened today that makes me wonder if they are spammers. I have a gmail account that I use solely for writing jobs. I woke up today to that account having 251 messages in the spam filter. It’s been a busy week for me so I’ve only applied for two jobs - the nutrition one and then a travel one that a former co-worker sent to me that was with I think it was Virtual Tourist. I can’t see the latter harvesting emails…

Website Content Writers Needed
This one bounces back.
Nothing more irritating than taking the time to jump thru all the hoops of what they specifically want and having it bounce back.
March 19th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Hi all,
As Lisa says above, the nutrition newsletter listing is NOT a writing job. In fact, it’s not even for a data entry job–it’s for job “information.” Their email response sent me to this link:

(Read the fine print at the bottom.)
Hope that helps!

For those of you concerned about stealing of samples, there may be some protection for you.
CAVEAT: Check this with another source, I’m doing this from memory from a Mass Com Law class too many years ago.
I believe that you can submit copy and send a certified mail copy of the article to yourself to prove copyright ownership (date is important, hence the certified mail). Of course, then you would need to go to court to prove copyright violation.
I think there may be a way to use Adobe to put a copyright or sample message across copy in a way that it can’t be re-used. You can retain a “clean” copy.
March 19th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Phil: the Adobe is a good idea since I often convert my resume into Adobe to send. If I had known how to track down the newsletter I think used my articles, I would but they used a hotmail address. You live, you learn.
Thanks again for the Adobe tip.
March 19th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
@Phil - re adobe, you can use a watermark and also lock it against printing and copying. Someone really ambitious could still retype and plagiarize, but it makes stealing something a little bit harder. I do this with my samples, even though I doubt a lawyer would ever try to steal my work — better safe than sorry!
March 20th, 2008 at 12:39 am
@Amy,
I thought it worked something like that. I don’t have any issues, but apparently some people here have had “samples” stolen, so they can take advantage of your improvement on the advice I offered, I knew Adobe had something, but was unsure how one went about it.
Thought you might be able to also confirm or correct copyright suggestion.
March 20th, 2008 at 12:56 am
@Phil - I’ve honestly never heard of the mailing to yourself method. I could ask a copyright lawyer if you want me to. All I’ve ever heard is registering with copyright office, as far as legal disputes and defenses go. But copyright isnt exactly my area, so I know about as much as you do — possibly less.

HEALTH and NUTRITION AD A CROCK
job-611039188@craigslist.org
Once again, my e-mail bounced back as MAILER DAEMON. They haven’t found anyone yet because it’s obviously an illegit ad. In fact, I’m trying to figure out which one of these CL ads for writers is a disguise for one of those “make $5,000 a month” scams, because I use only one particular e-mail account to respond to CL, and a short time ago, I received a response from a Stella Geddes, and in the subject header, it said, “This is in response to the job position.”
What job position? The message then talks about how I can make 3,5,000 a month working part time “processing ad responses.”
This Stella Geddes thing obviously was triggered by one of my responses to a CL writing ad. Did anyone else get a Stella Geddes response? We must find out which ad this is from, then spread the word in cyberspace that it’s illegit.

HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH !!!!! Am I clever or what !!!!
They fell for my trap !!!!!
THE AD FOR THE HEALTH AND NUTRITION WRITER IS A SCAM !!!
I sent them another e-mail, worded it differently, used a different signature, attached two new writing samples with the fake byline, and sent this from a DIFFERENT e-mail address that I use only for a few select parties.
Lo and behold, a short time later, I received a response from Hazel Girzling, with the exact subject header: “This is in response to the job position.”
And then it’s the exact hyped-up spiel about two women who were sick of the 9-5 grind and started some business where you can make 3 -5,000 a month processing ads.
HOW DARE THEY disguise this scam as a “health and nutrition writer” ad?
Either that, or CL has cross-wired the e-mail addresses.
However, if that’s the case, then you’d think that Stella and Hazel would acknowledge this and realize this, considering that my responses have “health and nutrition” in the subject header, and that this is what I say I’m applying for.
Either way, someone out there is doing a number on a lot of eager, honest writers.
THE HEALTH AND NUTRITION AD of
job-611039188@craigslist.org is COMPLETE SCAM !!!
March 20th, 2008 at 3:03 am
AND HERE IS THEIR WEB SITE:
http://www.secretofonlinesuccess.com/
Write to them and alert them that they are running a scam on CL, advertising for health and nutrition writers, when instead it’s a get rich quick scheme that has nothing to do with any writing whatsoever.
March 20th, 2008 at 3:03 am
Erricka,
I received something similar although it wasn’t from the same lady
I have been applying to a fair of amount of craiglist openings lately and hardly even get a response back anymore. At least in the past, I received some responses. Is my presentation/skills that bad? Are other writers having the same problem. I have been doing freelance for a while with most experience in the print world.
March 20th, 2008 at 3:27 am
Paul,
I actually gave up looking at CL for a time because I’d never hear back. I know we writers all have big egos sometimes, but I can objectively state that (despite the tone of some of my postings here), my responses to ads are very professional and eager, and I try not to sound like an automaton when responding. I include everything they ask for (online links to clips; rates; resume; etc.). I choose ads that only my experience aligns with.
Yet I hear nothing. I find this highly suspicious. How many here have the same problem? Just what are these ad-placers looking for, if we’re not good enough?? And I never point out spelling mistakes in their ad except maybe once or twice, and this was AFTER their response to me was shady.
March 20th, 2008 at 4:06 am
@Amy,
The mail to yourself was mentioned as a way to protect copyrights — before the Internet — when ownership of content was discussed. If I remember correctly, this establishes when material was first created, in case there’s some dispute. But, this may have been only for intellectual property like logos. As I mentioned in my note, this is what I remember, but no one should take this as gospel and instead should check if this is a potential way to protect copyright.
March 20th, 2008 at 4:15 am
Erricka,
I got the same e-mail from “Stella” that you did. Grrrrrr! This stuff gives CL a bad name. Did you flag it with them?
March 20th, 2008 at 4:36 am
The strange this is, that nutrition newsletter ad was posted a few days ago, but the reply-to email address was your healthynews at comcast dot net. I sent them an email but heard nothing, and I have lots of nutrition writing and NL experience.
March 20th, 2008 at 5:19 am
I can’t figure out how to flag the health/nutrition writer ad. What do you click on the page with the ad ?
This is the only instance in which I think an ad should be flagged. But as long as the flagging system is there, it will continue to be abused.
March 20th, 2008 at 5:22 am
I sent an email to the health and nutrition ad when it was a comcast address as well but didn’t get any response.
Regarding the number of ads we apply to and never hear anything back from… I guess I see that as the nature of jobhunting.
March 20th, 2008 at 6:35 am
@Erricka: I just flagged it and used “prohibited” as the category. My message came from Freddie someone, so they have multiple identities!
March 20th, 2008 at 7:24 am
@Paul and Erricka, I thought it was just me with the non-response to ads. Seriously, I only apply for gigs I feel qualified for, never correct typos in ads, do exactly what the ads ask for…and I never hear a thing in a large number of cases, which is very frustrating.
I only peruse CL through the links here and for my hometown, but I’ve had to start seeking jobs elsewhere.
March 20th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Does anyone know if the person who places a CL ad ever learns that the ad has been flagged?
March 20th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
The nutrition health writer ad is still running on CL. Lisa said she flagged it, so it must be running under a slightly different reply-e-mail address. Here is the site it’s running under, and it’s number 43 on the gig list:
http://aboutfreelancewriting.com/jobs/currentjobs.htm
I didn’t flag it because for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to flag an ad. Where it says “prohibited” in the upper right corner, when I click on that, nothing happens. It’s not even clickable. When I click on “Flag with care,” it takes me to some basic info, but nothing to click on to flag the ad.
March 20th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
@ Erricka: I just flagged it. I had to double click it before I got a “thanks for flagging” message.
March 20th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
@Erricka: I’ve had similar problems trying to flag scammy CL posts. I also once got a message that said something like “Thanks for flagging. Don’t worry if you flagged by mistake — it takes several for an ad to be removed.” I wonder if their platform and flagging protocols might differ just a little bit depending on the city.
