I didn’t flag it because for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to flag an ad. Where it says “prohibited” in the upper right corner, when I click on that, nothing happens. It’s not even clickable. When I click on “Flag with care,” it takes me to some basic info, but nothing to click on to flag the ad.

I only peruse CL through the links here and for my hometown, but I’ve had to start seeking jobs elsewhere.

Regarding the number of ads we apply to and never hear anything back from… I guess I see that as the nature of jobhunting.

This is the only instance in which I think an ad should be flagged. But as long as the flagging system is there, it will continue to be abused.

I got the same e-mail from “Stella” that you did. Grrrrrr! This stuff gives CL a bad name. Did you flag it with them?

The mail to yourself was mentioned as a way to protect copyrights — before the Internet — when ownership of content was discussed. If I remember correctly, this establishes when material was first created, in case there’s some dispute. But, this may have been only for intellectual property like logos. As I mentioned in my note, this is what I remember, but no one should take this as gospel and instead should check if this is a potential way to protect copyright.

I actually gave up looking at CL for a time because I’d never hear back. I know we writers all have big egos sometimes, but I can objectively state that (despite the tone of some of my postings here), my responses to ads are very professional and eager, and I try not to sound like an automaton when responding. I include everything they ask for (online links to clips; rates; resume; etc.). I choose ads that only my experience aligns with.

Yet I hear nothing. I find this highly suspicious. How many here have the same problem? Just what are these ad-placers looking for, if we’re not good enough?? And I never point out spelling mistakes in their ad except maybe once or twice, and this was AFTER their response to me was shady.

I have been applying to a fair of amount of craiglist openings lately and hardly even get a response back anymore. At least in the past, I received some responses. Is my presentation/skills that bad? Are other writers having the same problem. I have been doing freelance for a while with most experience in the print world.

Write to them and alert them that they are running a scam on CL, advertising for health and nutrition writers, when instead it’s a get rich quick scheme that has nothing to do with any writing whatsoever.

THE AD FOR THE HEALTH AND NUTRITION WRITER IS A SCAM !!!

I sent them another e-mail, worded it differently, used a different signature, attached two new writing samples with the fake byline, and sent this from a DIFFERENT e-mail address that I use only for a few select parties.

Lo and behold, a short time later, I received a response from Hazel Girzling, with the exact subject header: “This is in response to the job position.”

And then it’s the exact hyped-up spiel about two women who were sick of the 9-5 grind and started some business where you can make 3 -5,000 a month processing ads.

HOW DARE THEY disguise this scam as a “health and nutrition writer” ad?

Either that, or CL has cross-wired the e-mail addresses.

However, if that’s the case, then you’d think that Stella and Hazel would acknowledge this and realize this, considering that my responses have “health and nutrition” in the subject header, and that this is what I say I’m applying for.

Either way, someone out there is doing a number on a lot of eager, honest writers.

Once again, my e-mail bounced back as MAILER DAEMON. They haven’t found anyone yet because it’s obviously an illegit ad. In fact, I’m trying to figure out which one of these CL ads for writers is a disguise for one of those “make $5,000 a month” scams, because I use only one particular e-mail account to respond to CL, and a short time ago, I received a response from a Stella Geddes, and in the subject header, it said, “This is in response to the job position.”

What job position? The message then talks about how I can make 3,5,000 a month working part time “processing ad responses.”

This Stella Geddes thing obviously was triggered by one of my responses to a CL writing ad. Did anyone else get a Stella Geddes response? We must find out which ad this is from, then spread the word in cyberspace that it’s illegit.

I thought it worked something like that. I don’t have any issues, but apparently some people here have had “samples” stolen, so they can take advantage of your improvement on the advice I offered, I knew Adobe had something, but was unsure how one went about it.

Thought you might be able to also confirm or correct copyright suggestion.

CAVEAT: Check this with another source, I’m doing this from memory from a Mass Com Law class too many years ago.

I believe that you can submit copy and send a certified mail copy of the article to yourself to prove copyright ownership (date is important, hence the certified mail). Of course, then you would need to go to court to prove copyright violation.

I think there may be a way to use Adobe to put a copyright or sample message across copy in a way that it can’t be re-used. You can retain a “clean” copy.

As Lisa says above, the nutrition newsletter listing is NOT a writing job. In fact, it’s not even for a data entry job–it’s for job “information.” Their email response sent me to this link:
