I have a “note of caution” about the Looking for Overflow Writers post.

I have recently worked for her, but I didn’t have the best experience. It was a ghostwriting project. I am currently working with two other clients on ghostwriting projects and they are fantastic ladies – complimentary, respectful, helpful direct feedback, working with me over some time to get familiar with my style, etc.

This experience was more about a high-volume rush job. Some people can handle that, I realize that I cannot now. This lady’s attitude seemed noticeably less professional (and more snarky) than the other two ladies I work with. Not as helpful, using ALL CAPS in some parts of her email when I could tell she was disappointed in some of the work I turned in.

Perhaps she just has a more powerful personality than I do, but it didn’t appear she was working too hard to develop a relationship with me as her ghostwriter (representing her reputation to her clients). Compared to my experience with the other two, I understand now that this is pretty important.

    Just a word of caution.

Just an aside here. This emphasizes my point I was trying to make about a month ago when we had that heated discussion about “being nice” on this blog. I was stating how utterly important it is to try harder through email or online venues when you communicate because there is so much less to go on when interpretting information.

These other two ladies made sure they gave me enough information for me to understand we were developing a positive mutually respectful working relationship. Since I know it is possible and not just a fluke, it just means you have to work at it.

Perhaps if I were in phone or more personal contact with this other lady, things would be different (maybe for some of your gigs, too). It really shows up when it appears you aren’t trying very hard, or aren’t considering how what you say will come off.

OK, coming down from the soap box now!

On a happy note, I’m excited that spring is around the corner and the sun is out longer :)

  3. Laura says:

Thanks for the heads up! I actually had three or four I could apply for, keeping fingers crossed. Woohoo!

    You are awesome Deb!

  4. Thanks, Erika, for the insights, and to Deb for a great list as always.

  5. Sarah says:

Has anyone ever worked with Sandbox International? I’ve heard they were a scam to get email information… But I have no clue. :-)

  6. Anna Jameson says:

I would like to second the comments made by Erika Krull. I also worked with the employer listed in the “Looking for Overflow Writers” post and my experience was also rather negative. This is just how my experience went — perhaps others had a more pleasant working environment with the same client, but my own experience was very similar to what Erika describes.

  7. Erika Krull says:

    @Anna

Interesting to hear it isn’t just me :)

  8. sl says:

I too worked for that lady. She is very rude and didn’t pay me for the last assignments I did for her. It’s her and a guy, sending out work and paying pennies on the dollar. I was just starting out, so I didn’t know how much writing was worth. I wouldn’t recommend anyone working with her. She’s rude and a little young to be so judgemental and arrogant. Unprofessional indeed.

  9. Jenny B says:

    Hi Deb
Great listing. I appreciate to comments too.

@Erika Spring! I think I remeber what spring looks like. Ottawa is supposed to get another huge dump of snow on Saturday and then more by Tuesday. Poor little flowers won’t see the sun until August at this rate!

  10. Jenny B says:

Obviously I meant I appreciate the comments too. (Sorry everybody…long day…or should I say….long winter.)

  11. Erika Krull says:

Great, she hasn’t paid me yet. Hmm….

  12. I am so grateful for the input regarding the overflow post. Thanks!

  13. Erika Krull says:

    @Jenny B

We’re in Nebraska, so we might get a little spring before you do. My 8 yr old daughter said it was March, so why isn’t it like spring yet? I said, that really didn’t happen so much until late March or April.

February was just a week ago. If we lived in Texas or Georgia, maybe. Not here yet, honey. Sorry :)

But we could get a tornado in a few weeks if we’re lucky (???) Stranger things have happened.

  14. Erika Krull says:

Young indeed. It does explain the attitude.

  15. Ann G. says:

@Jenny – I’ll sit in the corner and commiserate about the weather and lack of spring. It snowed here in northeastern Vermont last week – 16 inches, followed by 40 degrees and rain on Tuesday night that led to freezing rain on Wednesday that cancelled school. Today was 40 again and sunny, but started tomorrow night they say more snow and freezing rain all through Saturday night. Then a Canadian cold front is moving in again and we can expect temps of 5 below zero for lows. At this point, I’m miserably sick of winter.

  16. Elle says:

Is a grant gig that pays a percentage of the grant if awarded (which is kind of illegal, and definitely frowned upon)technically considered a paying gig? As a grant writer I’d just advise anyone to be really careful with those kinds of posts.

  17. Jenny B says:

@ Ann and Erika Thank you for letting me know that even though you’re hopeful of spring, that winter is still very much happeneing in your areas.

  18. Fiona says:

Regarding the overflow post… the response I got was to let them know the lowest rate I’d be willing to accept. Doesn’t fill me with confidence.

  19. Mary Ward says:

@ Erika & Company, re: Overflow Writers–

This is why this place is great! Thanks for the heads up, now I won’t waste my time. I have enough work with good people not to be playing games with people with poor attitudes! Glad you offered…

@Elle–I second your advice to others, for the record. Grant pay terms should always be separate. People keep in mind–if you are paid from grant proceeds (which isn’t really legal like Elle said) and the group doesn’t get the grant, where will your paycheck come from? It won’t! And with stiff grant competition, even the best grant stands a good chsnce of not being chosen for funding!

  20. Ann G. says:

    Re: Overflow Writers

I’d applied too and got that same response – send your lowest possible rate. I responded telling her that I’d heard distrubing stories about her work ethics and was definitely not interested.

Meanwhile, another possibility contacted me and offered a really great rate, so it all works out.

  21. Erika Krull says:

Wow, I’m glad I said something here about Overflow Writers. I was worried that was “bad form” or something. But it seems it has helped some people out. Thanks to others chiming in.

It helps me resolve the whole experience for myself, too. Lots of missed sleep, stress, and now I’m sick. Probably not a coincidene.

    You guys are great! ;)

@Ann G – Congrats on the much better gig! Obviously, there’s no need to put up with garbage like the Overflow Writer ad.

  22. Laura says:

Of course I received the same ‘form’ email from her. I wasn’t sure if I should respond or just ignore it?

Best price for 300 words? Well, it really depends on the topics and how much I need to research. But I am not going to go through the trouble ( with attitude and personalities) for only $10 or $15 bucks.

    Thanks for the heads up!

  23. Erika says:

Oh, it won’t be 10-15 bucks for 300 words. Try under 2 cents a word fro my last project. Embarassing to say that.

  24. Laura says:

Wow! Well, I do not like ignoring emails, but what good does it do to respond. I went to her site and seems she does a lot of PLR too. Even that pays at least $10 an article…sad, so sad.

    Thanks Erika! ;)

  25. Erika Krull says:

Looks like I may get stiffed on that project – not sure yet. Dissatisfied with my work, I guess…

At least it has prompted me to give an extra thanks this week to my clients who are great.

    Making lemonade out of lemons….

  26. Sydney says:

thanks for the heads up on the “overflow” ad. i was just about to respond to it – no thanks!

  27. Jessica says:

Just an FYI to all on her — the LOOKING FOR OVERFLOW WRITERS position on here ISN’T from me nor have I put out an ad recently. If it is, it isn’t me. I have had spamming problems lately and someone else took my email address with hotmail, mine has a period, theirs does not, so there has been MASS confusion.

The only person I have worked with prior on the list of people commenting is ERIKA, not Anna, SL or SI as it says or anyone else. And I do not work with a guy, I’m alone, which furthers extend the confusion on this matter.

In regards to the attitude, one thing I hate about online communication is that things are misinterpreted and I’m sure if I would have talked to you on the phone you would feel otherwise. I also use Caps TO emphasize portions because sometimes the plain text portion of my email client (Which includes bolding) fails me, and something extremely important is missed, which is why I do caps enough. Not intended to yelling, etc.

Just wanted to respond here becuase one of my writers informed me of the post, I won’t be replying again, but wanted to clear that up.

I wish you all the best and have a great holiday weekend!

  28. Jessica says:

And I didn’t proofread before sending that, just back from oral surgery.

    Thanks again.
