Good morning freelancing friends. The calendar says it’s spring but the weather man says there’s still wintry weather to experience. The good news is the crocuses have hit their peak and the hyacinth and daffodils are coming up. Nothing like the signs of spring to pull one out of the winter funk! Hope you’re having a great weekend… …here’s what I’m reading this weekend. Speaking of images and copyright, PicApp launches offers access to copyrighted images and news at 901am. For what it’s worth, I use PicApp for some of my own blogs and my b5 blogs. A lot of [Read more…]
5 Tips for Dealing with Weekly or Monthly Quotas
If you blog for a network you probably have to meet a minimum number of posts each week or month. I’ve worked for some networks where at least one post every day for six days a week is cool. I worked for other places where they expected three to five posts a day, minimum. If you’re blogging for more than one network or person, this can be a little tricky. Fortunately there are ways to make it work. Post Ahead – If there’s a specific day or time where you can work for long blocks of times undisturbed, do what [Read more…]
The Pros and Cons of Being a Network Blogger
I love my job. It took 20 years of “paying my dues” working desk jobs to get to this point and I’m happy to be here. There’s nothing more rewarding than to be blogging about my passion to other people. I always said my worst day blogging is 100 times better than my best day at my office job and I still believe it to be true. That doesn’t mean it’s all rosy though. Like any other job, there are pros and cons to being a freelance blogger. Pros You spend the day talking about the things you enjoy. You [Read more…]
What is a Blogger for Hire?
A blogger for hire, or freelance blogger, primarily earns a living working for a client or clients rather than maintaining his own blog. Many freelance bloggers work for such well known networks a b5Media, KnowMoreMedia, Creative Weblogging or 451Press. Other bloggers for hire work for businesses or individuals as a way to add a personal touch to the company home page. If you blog for another person you’re a blogger for hire. Look on any job board featuring jobs for writers or web writers…what do you see? A surge in blogging jobs. It only makes sense to give those who [Read more…]
We Get Letters
So I’m going through the email, something I put off for a few days. Sometimes, when I open my Gmail account it tells me I have about 800 or 1000 pieces of email and I have to put it off until I have the time to sort through all of it. I’m doing a little today and here are some letters I thought I’d share. Hi Deb, I am finding myself currently mired in the murky and desperately gray area of fair use and public domain materials. I remember you posted about this about a week ago on freelancewritinggigs.com. [Read more…]

On Manners, Rudeness, and Respect
I was going to stick this in my weekend link love post, but I think in light of recent discussions here and at InkThinker and Write From Home, I’d like to talk about it here. What has happened to our manners? And by "our" I don’t necessarily mean members of the FWJ community. I mean residents of cyberspace. Lately all of our discussions appear to be centered around topics such as sending scolding emails to people we don’t feel pay enough money, sending scolding emails to employers who might be grammatically challenged, flagging jobs we don’t want anyone to have, [Read more…]

Your Turn: Do You Correct an Employer’s Errors When Applying for a Gig
I was chatting with someone who placed an ad on Craigslist yesterday for a desirable freelance writing gig. While she wasn’t the person who wrote or placed the ad, she’s the one who has to screen all the applicants. She was impressed for the most part at the different applicants and their credentials but she was dismayed at what she sees is a trend in rudeness from job applicants. I’m posting her words with permission: Even though we’re hiring writers not all of us who work here write for a living. It’s off-putting to read emails from writers telling us [Read more…]

On Cover Letters, Quotes, Attachments and Whether or Not the Gig is Worth the Effort
Yesterday’s post regarding the response to my job ad led to a flood of comments and emails -and not all in my favor. I did expect some disagreement, however. I think there are a few points still crying out for discussion. Specifically cover letters, quotes, attachments, and whether or not one needs to make the effort for an employer who, as one emailer put it, "asks for a lot." So let’s get on with it, then. Cover Letters Are cover letters necessary when a resume and samples are requested? I think so. A resume lists the details of your past. [Read more…]

Job Ad Feedback: Deb Takes Out an Ad
Your mail and comments tell me you want to hear more from people who hire writers. What are they looking for? What keeps them from hiring certain writers and what draws their eye to an applicant? Are there particular things they look out for? Let me share my experience with you. Last week I found myself in a position where I needed to take out an ad for writing help. Though I posted the ad on a major job site, it was also reposted here and other re-listing blogs. I didn’t use my name as I didn’t want that to [Read more…]
