@ Paul and Matt: I would have to agree with Matt’s take on working for Suite 101. I did work there but found that it wasn’t very lucrative for me, although some of their writers do quite well. It did give me some clips that I could use as samples, though, and there has been one very fortunate development for me as a result too: I was recently contacted by a major publishing house wanting to buy the rights to publish a portion of one of my articles in a book.

I made more from the reprint than I ever made at Suite in all the time I was there!

Paul,

The experience at Suite101 is good, for new writers looking for a portfolio. But it’s very hard to make money there.

They make you jump through small, flaming hoops for a percentage based on ad clicks. They won’t tell you what the percentage is, but it’s small. I know people there that have written 50 to 100+ articles and are still making less than $20.00 a month.

I was published as a mystery shopper in Earnshaw’s magazine this spring. They paid me $200 for 2,000 words. Best of all, I had the check in hand before the issue was actually mailed out, so I didn’t have to wait for my money!

@ Ann. eHarmony is apparently very evangelical in its ownership and is known for rejecting a lot of people who don’t meet its “moral” guidelines.

On another note – I’ve been offered a chance to write a column for a new national women’s mag, due to hit the stands in June. I’m excited about it but also am aware of the number of print mags that don’t make it. I’m wondering what rate I should be asking for and feel completely clueless. On the one hand it’s national so should pay well. On the other hand, since it’ll be new to the market, combined with my fear that I’ll be asking too much…. any advice from anyone?

Hehehe. A year ago, I was assigned an article on the pros and cons of all the different dating sites – eHarmony included. To get prices for many of these, you have to sign up first, so I turned myself into a single mom and kept the rest of my profile as close to my own nature as possible. eHarmony rejected me saying I was too family oriented!

I saw this job post a couple days ago and responded. I’m curious to see if the fact that I’ve been happily married for 17 years might win me a writing spot… so far no word though.
