@David V:
 It's possible the legal "features" are actually case write-ups, which can be extremely difficult because you have to read the legal documents, decode the legalese, understand the meaning, and then write cogent English sentences explaining what happened. If so, the trend or profile piece actually could be easier -- and potentially less valuable to a legal publication.

I just looked at the pay rate and have to add: Say what?

Yes, I've done the calculations and I'm not all that impressed (but then again, I don't take assignments that pay less than 50 cents a word). Still, I have to ask, why the need for such a convoluted policy? I understand that they are lawyers and like to bill by the word, but that seems strange even for the legal field. And why the heck are they paying less for profiles and trend pieces? I don't know about you, but I find that profiles are harder to write than straight forward features. YEESH.

Fiona,

That looks like a good one, you should be able to nearly double that rate (110 words per hour, even with interview times as part of the hour, should be relatively simple.).

Of course, if editors are ridiculous, you may want to pay someone to take the job by the end (happend to me a couple of times). But if they're reasonable, looks like an excellent gig.

Best of luck.

Thanks Jodee - I was right then. I'm just not used to seeing jobs that offer such a good rate of pay (relative newbie that I am).

@ Fiona: I just did a little bit of math here...

500 words divided by 55 words per hour =9.09
9.09 x $25 = $227.25

I think that makes sense....
