Yes, it’s changed as media firms try to control costs. They won’t accept blatant self promotion, but will accept thought leadership pieces, trend pieces and case studies as long as there isn’t blatant self-promotion.

That’s why many of the pubs I’ve written for in the past can still publish with micro-thin staffs.

@phil; wow, how the industry has changed. Around 2000, when I was freelancing for the San Antonio Express-News, I was especially told by the editors there to watch for people who wanted to do that. A big change indeed. Thanks for the heads-up.

I have to disagree with you. You can pitch a publication to see what their needs/rules are for outside contributions. More and more publications take these because they keep staffs to a minimum. This is a huge change in the industry, but one that has certainly happened. 15 years ago, they would rarely accept outside contributions, but now several do.

But you should seek to find the publications needs before writing the article, not the other way around.

Writing, then pitching is like writing on spec. Some may have some success doing this, but I’ve always avoided it.

I have supported and even sent people to this site–I am starting to feel like the invisible woman on this forum. It would be one thing if I have never asked specific questions or engaged in dialogs yet no one has ever responded to me.

On the Internet, such a response feels like a snub as this is literally our only means of communication.

If for whatever reason you just don’t want my support or presence let me know, by but please tell me what the heck I did that has caused me to be ignored for almost a year on this forum before I go…

Deb, Jodee I hope you realize just how “international” FWJ is.
It may be hard being a niche writer, but it’s even harder being a niche writer based in Australia when most leads are U.S based. Even those that offer the “work from anywhere” option, often mean “work from anywhere in the U.S”.
I aint complaining of course, I love the challenge and have found some good gigs through the site.

Best way to approach this is to tell a client that you’ll work with them on a press release to be submitted. Generally, once a publication gets a press release of something appealing, they’ll send the press release to one of their reporters or freelancers and have them do an entire article. The release is used as a guide as the reporter does research, interviews, etc.

I’ve been reading every post on this site for a couple of months… it’s almost like a treasure box. Sometimes you open it and find something great, and it keeps you coming back!

Alas, it can be a tough life, being a young Australian niche videogame writer.

But then again, we’re all freelancers, we all know the feeling!
