Great list, but I just want to make a comment about Off The Record Research. I took a job with them a year ago, and they don’t want a journalist. They give you a list of businesses and they ask you to call them to “interview” them about financial information that businesses aren’t required to make public, even under SEC regs. They compile the info and sell it so your company’s competitors can get insider info about your operations. Needless to say, I quit the job after a day.

I guess it’s a question of perspective — I don’t object to doing that kind of work! And I know other experienced journalists who work on contract for research firms.
Maybe it’s my B2B background … I’ve worked for a long time for companies that sell this kind of information, and they have to get high prices for their research reports and subscriptions because they don’t take ads and have to make money somehow.
P.S. to Jodee — welcome back – great list!
The pregnancy e-book does not specify pay but mentions “bids” and requires a 7-day turn around.
Odd – I have tried to apply for a Craigslist job posted here today, but both times I’m getting a bounceback-type message saying that my mail was undeliverable:
“(the address) does not seem to be valid. It could be you’re trying to respond to a very old posting, or that the user has not requested anonymous email forwarding. Please check the address and try again.”
I’m at an impasse – the listing is still there, but there seems to be no way to either respond to the listing or to inform someone at Craigslist HQ that something is off there. Or am I missing something?

I’ve had that problem several times this week. For one, I even tried contacting the organization directly and their email bounced back so finally I had to give up.
Very frustrating though.
Tell me about it. First the flagging thing earlier this week that took a lot of positions up my alley out of play, and now this. If organizations are serious about looking for applicants, they should act serious and double-check that all links worth. Otherwise they’re wasting everyone’s time, including those who have no time to waste.
Dave, try copy/pasting the job listing into your search engine of choice (I use Dogpile) and see if it’s listed elsewhere – perhaps with the correct information.
This is also an excellent way to capture Craigslist info, even after it’s been flagged by idiots. Sometimes, you can snag an e-mail address in the brief intro in search engine listings and track it down. (There, that’s my little secret.)

I know why they charge what they charge; but that isn’t my point. You don’t ferret out information that is germaine to the nature of a company’s operations with the express purpose of selling it so that some other company can get a leg up on the competition. It’s simply bad form.
Everybody running around talking about the new corporate ethics that developed as a result of the shenanigans of the likes of Enron and ImClone. But it seems to me that if an outfit like Off The Record can do what they do and still sleep at night, there is no change in the ethical climate, it’s business as usual. That’s what I object to.
@Tish – I noticed that, too. For a 7 day turnaround on what must be upwards of nearly 30,000 words (assuming 500 words per page), I would have liked seeing some actual numbers.
I have plenty of work now, but I looked into it because I like reading ads of things I *could* do (verify there could be work later, I guess!). Anyway, makes me a little concerned there will be some >$.01 per word writer that will bid people out.
I guess for fast turnarounds like that, I’d like to see a company offer up some kind of bonus pay, or at least a guranteed minimum pay level (acknowledging the speed and the “dropping everything” aspect).
Even if it is a “walk in the park” with all their research and/or your experience, 65 pages is damn lot of words to do in 7 days! I about dropped my jaw when I saw that. Wanting huge quantities of words in very short periods of time as always a little suspect to me. (Why couldnt’ they plan ahead a little more to give more time to the writer??)

@ Cindy – Neat trick!! I’ve noticed that old posts and web pages often still stick in the search engines to a degree. Good to find a useful way to catch those slippery CL ads.
Also, sometimes the relevant sentences of research articles will pop up there, and then you just find the title and journal info when you click through

Question for anyone who can help: I am new to the freelancing world and have had recent success in being considered for a pregnancy e-book job. The publisher asked that I “submit a bid, along with my writing sample.” I’ve never had a to submit a bid before. I’m assuming it is my rate I would charge for the e-book, but how do you decide what is a fair rate when you have NO CLUE what a going rate for an e-book would be??? HELP ME, PLEASE!
doggone it! i was really hopeful on that mac gig, but it’s way too low-paying for me. too much research/ testing for what you get in return. i love my mac and so want to write about it.
@lenzi – you could try checking writer’s market for some sample rates.
from there you could figure an average rate per page, multiply it by the number of pages, and then add in some extra for a cushion.
everyone sets their rates differently.
@ Becky: Thanks! It’s not often I get a cold that knocks me right back on my backside, but this one sure did. I’m not completely recovered yet, but definitely on the mend.
