I love the note added at the bottom of the “Freelance Professional Writer Sought” posting.
@ Amanda: I thought that was interesting as well.
Oh my! A company just told me that $0.02 to $0.03 a word is the going rate for educated, experienced writers. Wow.
@ Scribette: thank you for the laugh.
Scribette,
Should a few of us inform the company of firms that pay $1 a word (I write for a couple), and that there are tons at 50 cents a word (have a few of those, too)?
WARNING REGARDING THE AD TITLED:
Editor Wanted $10 per page.
This is a membership fee disguised as a writing gig. I sent an e-mail and received a link to apply. I visited the link. In order to apply for this job you must sign up for a trial membership for some freelance thing.
I also bet this particular job doesn’t really exist; it’s just an example of gigs you get on the membership list.
This ad should be flagged on CL. Will someone do that? The flagging on my end does not work. This is a case where flaggingn is legitimate.
Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I was a writer for Demand Media (listed yesterday) for a few months before they apparently changed formats and fired my contact. I have been trying to get in contact with them again for a long time, and with your ad, I was rehired in a matter of minutes and back to work. Thank you!
Erricka – I’ve noticed several of those popping up on Craigslist lately. I’ve been able to spot most of them as they are posted using the same very distinctive (and very professional looking) style, with bold headings for job summary, requirements etc. It’s a shame when it’s becoming harder to tell the legit jobs from the nonlegit ones.
Jodee -
Just thought I would thank you, recently completed my first money-paying gig for quite a substantial amount, and it’s all thanks to you!
I’m heading over to your side of the pond in about four days, but they’ve promised me more work when I get back as well. Hopefully by then I’ll be all the more experienced and qualified.
Thanks again, lady!
I went yesterday to apply for the position at Demand Studios. I’m in Canada, and I had the option to choose which country I’m in. But when I went to verify my emai address I coulnd’t. I went to their FAQs and it says that they only accept US writers? I’m just curious if there are any other Canadians that ran into this.
BTW thanks for the posts! Even if I’m not getting any new jobs yet, I’m really honing my CV and starting to apply for jobs out of my comfort zone.
@ Jack B: You are most welcome! Enjoy your trip.
I am so glad I have found this site. I have enjoyed reading your comments and learning how to become a profesional writer.
Thank you for the assistance.
Colleen,
I’m also Canadian and was accepted as a Demand Studios writer, and enquired about the same thing…we can work for them, but they can’t pay us (got an actual e-mail from a real person). They’re looking to fix that in the feature (accepting international writers).
@carla
Thanks for letting me know!
oops…fix that in the “future” not “feature”….sorry.
Hi Jodee
Thanks yet again for these posts. The “Teachers Needed to Write” is right up my alley.
Wow. Two postings today for my tiny little town. Not bad.
I don’t mean to be nasty, but why would you include a month old (April 30) job ad for today (May 30)? And your statement in “About Freelance Writing Jobs” says you especially want to help people work from home when just about every single ad you publish is an on site job. I realize that your ads come from Craigslist and other job boards just like similiar sites have so you can have the Google ads for revenue etc., but it gets frustrating as a writer to go to different sites to look for work and see the same stuff posted everywhere. When the dates are old and when they aren’t telecommuting jobs, it’s even more frustrating. I do like your writing and communication though!
@ Jenny B: You’re welcome.
@ Adam: I’m glad you found something interesting on the list today.
Hiya Sheri –
We don’t mostly publish on site jobs – these are freelance opportunities and Jodee works hard to bring these opportunities each day. Plenty of people found work through this blog.
I can’t help that there are so many job boards showing the same thing, we can just help to make your life easier by weeding out the scams and the dumb opportunities and presenting you with the best of the bunch.
Fortunately this blog is a free country – if a gig isn’t to your liking you can move on to the next one. And if this blog isn’t to your liking you can move on to one of the copycats.
Thank you so much and have a great day.
You know, you’d think that when people say they don’t mean to be nasty, then they won’t be nasty. Unfortunately, in the real world, it always seems to be the opposite. Sad.
I don’t mean to be kind, so I’ll just be honest: I GOT A JOB because of this blog!!
Not only a cool freelance gig, but the guy liked my writing and wants to turn our arrangement into something a little more serious meaning contract! (Do I get a ring? Ha!)
I’m a real person too — not a “sock puppet” (meaning, this note is not fabricated). The job is totally telecommute.
It’s easy to write scathing comments to people who you’ll never meet.
Plus I’m a sahm of five year old boys. I sooo don’t want to go back to work when they’re officially in first grade. I want to be able to drop them at school (if we can still afford gas), get home, put on my slippers, and sit down at the computer and write. Heaven.
And it’s because of you people!
This particular job is right up my alley too, but more important, the response I received from the editor bolstered my confidence, not as a writer, but as someone who can slice through all of the many emails those folks must get and land a job.
Really, I don’t mean to be kind. I’m just being honest. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
p.s. if I sound giddy, it’s because I am.
Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for creating this great spot for writers.
@ Wendy: Don’t hold back; tell us what you really think!
All kidding aside, I am SO PLEASED to hear that you got a great gig from one of the jobs posted here. Go go, girl!
Phil:
Would you inform us of those companies that pay $1 and 50 cent a word. I’ve just started working for Demand Studios now, submitted my first article, and I’m looking for more work. I’m new to freelancing. Thanks!
Shermika,
Several trade pubs pay 50 cents a word. But they expect quite a bit of experience and subject matter knowledge. However, the number is shrinking as print pubs consolidate.
Phil:
I have an English degree(not sure if that helps) and I know a lot about dialysis and transplantation, among other things (I think:-)
Would you please provide ways to look for work if you know of any? I’m trying to get my foot in the door. Thanks
