Freelance Writing Jobs for May 1, 2008

Sorry for the paltry bit of leads, folks. Jodee is under the weather and I’m starting a new freelance gig with almost full time hours. Have a good day! Remember May is anniversary month. The most prolific commentator for the month wins an external hard drive. I’d also like to invite you to come out of the comments this month to be a guest blogger. You have the whole month of May to plan your post – as long as it’s on topic you’re welcome to throw your hat in the ring.

So I’ll stop talking now and give you leads….By the way, if you’d like to beef up this list a little, why not share your own leads in the comments?

Good luck!

Deb

A freelance writing gig with almost full-time hours? Sounds pretty cool! Is it for an online outlet? Anyplace that we’re likely to know?

    Congrats!

  3. Yin says:

Deb, congrats with your new gig.
I’ve been like crazy this last few days also looking for a gig but no luck at all. I sent a few emails to some leads from this site but no answer, I guess too many people are applying for the leads.
I love this site, I found my first low paying gig on Craigslist, then when I read this site’s posts about How to Find the High Paying Freelance Writing Jobs…it was very useful so I landed a great gig and now I don’t have any gigs, but thanks to your site I’m sure I’ll find something soon

I have one I’ve been seeing locally, but it doesn’t list pay and I haven’t heard back from the woman, so I can’t say if it is strictly an unpaid internship or not…

For anybody who doesn’t know this site:

It’s worth investigating for the job listings and the great advice about the business end of writing.

  7. Happy anniversary! I am one of the many who is grateful for your site…

  8. Patrice says:

Educational Publishers and Book Packagers often hire freelances for their various books and projects. Here are two resources that are more general than specific, but if you do a little footwork (or web searching) you might get some good results.

The American Book Producers Association: http://www.abpaonline.org
Click on members in the menu bar and you’ll get a list of book packagers with links.

The Association of Educational Publishers: http://aepweb.org
Click on members in the menu bar and then “members list” in the bar that appears on the next page. Unfortunately, there are no direct links on the list, so you’ll have to do a bit of googling yourself, but this can be a good resource if you have background in teaching or want to break into to writing for kids.

  9. Best of luck to you Deb! Sounds great to have a full time gig! Some of us dream of finding that type of freelance job :-) Thank you for your site, i check it every morning for leads …NJ

  10. Phil says:

    Congrats on the gig.

Suggestion: Find another freelancer to pinch hit at those times Jodee is unavailable. I think there are several on this board who would be available at a reasonable price.

I use subcontractors and backup subcontractors for the same reason. While I have one who is my first go-to person, I have a couple of others for different types of work and to whom I will turn if my first option is unavailable.

  11. Ann G. says:

I generally do a mass search on Monday and would be happy to keep a list and have Deb or Jodee post it. And I don’t need to be paid, I’ve gotten enough from this site that it could be my way of paying them back since I never have spare cash to donate and always feel bad about it.

  12. Tai G says:

    Deb:
I check you out every morning. You and Jodee do a great job! Thanks for your time and good luck on the gig!

  13. Fiona says:

    Happy Anniversary,

And Patrice – thanks for the two great websites. After speaking to my young niece, I have an idea for a kids’ book that I want to develop so these will come in very handy.

  14. Deb says:

@Mary E – Thank you so much and you’re welcome. I do wish I had more jobs for you today.

@Julie – Almost full time – about six hours worth of work a day for a private client. I love being busy, don’t you?

@Yin – I’m thrilled that post helped you! It’s one of the most popular and proof you don’t need to take a $2 offer!

@Ann G – Thanks so much for posting your lead.

    @ Robin – Thanks, friend.

@ Julie T. And I’m grateful for your (and everyone’s) companionship!

@Patrice – Thank you for those valuable resources!

@Natasha – You’re next great gig is right around the corner, I can feel it. Just don’t give up.

@Phil – Duly noted. Jodee’s not ill often and she has me very spoiled, but it can’t hurt to have backup.

@Tai – Thank you so much!

@ Fiona – Thank you so much, too.

All one has to do is look at the comments here and know why I love my community so much.

  15. Renee says:

    Feel better soon Jodee!

  16. Happy Anniversary Deb!

If you have room for one more guest blogger I’d be happy to write a post about taking the plunge into Freelancing. I don’t have advice for anyone, but I quit my job yesterday and I’m officially going to be a freelance writer starting in June(Yay!), so I could write about all the things we are having to figure out.

  17. Adam says:

I’d like to read that Jessica. The first steps are always the hardest. I’d be interested to see another person’s perspective on starting “officially” to freelance.

  18. Daryl says:

Sorry for the paltry bit of leads, folks. Jodee is under the weather and I’m starting a new freelance gig with almost full time hours.

Sorry folks, you’re fucked! Deb has gotta fatten her purse with her favorite color MONEY!

  19. Fiona says:

Wow Daryl – two mean posts within minutes of each other. We’re here because we like Deb and what she does so if you can’t say something nice….

  20. LaskiGal says:

Yikes . . .I’ve been lurking for awhile and finally decided to post–consider my post one that cancels out the mean one! I think you’ve done such a great job! I mean, there are so many sites where you have to PAY to find out this information. Plus, your personal touches and style make this a fun and supportive site to visit!

    Congrats on your gig!!!

  21. shells says:

Congrats on your new job! Well deserved! :)

  22. Maria E. says:

    Daryl,

I sure your mother taught you to mind your manners when you’re a guest in someone else’s house. Well it applies here too.

  23. becky says:

Another new gig, Deb? I don’t know how you do it. Congrats.

Jodee, hope you feel better soon. I had a nasty bug earlier this week, but it was luckily only the 24-hour kind. (Still sucked, though.)

Deb, the backup idea is a great one, too. Someone who already watches the lists and can jump in when needed.

  24. Jodee says:

@ Renee and Becky: Thank you; I’m feeling a bit better today.

  25. Mel says:

Daryl, John, Jerry, Bill, whatever your name is this week. You seem to be a big fan of Deb’s since you go to all her blogs and leave comments. This is one of the nicer ones.

Are you telling me you wouldn’t put full time work first over a volunteer effort? Of course you’re going to take a higher paying job. Don’t tell us you wouldn’t think of the money.

And I don’t consider myself screwed if there aren’t jobs because there’s always good advice and good company here. Well, except for you.

I hope Debs keeping a record of these. She probably has a good case for harrassment at this point.

  26. A.L says:

    Hi there,

    Happy Anniversary!

You know, I’ve been lurking around your blog for the past two months… after almost a year of thinking to take the plunge. And yes I’ve taken the plunge right now and your site has helped me a lot!

Thank you so very much for the useful tips, great leads and daily gig postings. I got my first gig from here about two weeks ago and couldn’t be more grateful as it’s a start.

    Loving this site :)

Rock On...
