The words CV and Resume mean different things depending on where you live.

That makes it a bit tricky, because if you think a CV lists all your publications and you send in a 4 page CV, the person on the other end might have been expecting what you consider a resume.

If you know what country the person you’re sending the application to lives in, you can check the terminology on the internet. Otherwise, you might not send them what they’re after.

It never hurts to ask.

For myself, I compiled a mixture of the two: CV and Resume, which has all the relevant information in there but I still refer to it as a resume.

In response to the netflix job. I applied for this job several months ago. I have experience writing synopsies as well as a master’s degree and still have not heard back from them. When I tried to re-apply yesterday it wouldn’t let me as they said they already had me on file. I guess they’re just like their distribution center, incredibly slow to respond

Kim,
Some people use CV and resume interchangeably, and I’m not sure I could articulate the difference … unless by CV you mean one of those long things listing every publication you’ve authored or edited. If that’s what you mean, I would recommend using a resume unless you’re applying for an academic gig.
I use a one-page bio that lists subjects I’ve written about (among other things). Sometimes I send it along with my resume. If the job poster specifies, then by all means send what they ask for.
If you’re looking for advice about what to send with query letters, I’m the wrong one to answer.

Does anyone have any advice about whether a CV is better than a traditional resume for getting freelance writing jobs? A resume doesn’t really highlight publications, but a CV tends to be more known in the academic worlds (yet it highlights publishing history). Any thoughts on this?

Yeah i was wondering about the telecommute thing too, if it says locatoin Atlanta does it mean only people in atlanta apply even if it is telecommuting?

@ Rhonda: I think it depends on how the person who posted the ad interpreted their posting choices.

Some that post both “Atlanta” and “telecommute” might mean that They are based in Atlanta and they don’t care where you live.

Others who post the same thing might mean, They want you to be based in Atlanta, but they don’t have office space for you so they want you to work at home.

Best bet is to ask.

For my own future reference, when an ad says
“location: Atlanta,” or “location: Dallas,” but also says “telecommuting is ok,” does that typically mean that telecommuting is ok within those areas?

I have seen some ads that state a particular city or region, but then in their description they say you don’t have to live in those areas. Others don’t specifically state that, but just have the “telecommuting is ok” phrase. I just wanted to check on this.

A note on the Netflix job. I saw this ad on their site a number of months ago and applied. They sent back an email stating that they really were not considering applicants who lack a college degree and previous experience writing movie blurbs/reviews. So those applying might want to make sure they have that experience.

I just want to say thanks for a great website! I am trying to make enough money freelancing to stay at home with my daughter. I’ve been trying to break into the business for about two months, with no success. This past Friday, however, I got my first paying gig! I wouldn’t have been able to do it without all of the commenters and Deb and Jodee. Thanks so much!
