@ Chris - It took me a while to get into blogging. People who know me know that I applied to A LOT of blogging jobs before I landed some good ones (the word "good" might be relative here). I do enjoy the blogging jobs I have, though, so it worked out well in the end. If you don't have a personal blog, you may want to start doing that so you have something to show to prospective employers.

Very good jobs, Jodee, much better than old bossy, cranky, overweight Deb.

Deb is busy placing these days text ads on our words, always trying to make a buck. I'll bet she is the type who searches between sofa cushions for loose change... at other people's houses.

@Matt- Real quick, my dad's in the ER again, so I wasn't around all afternoon and now have a ton of work to make up. I admit I did choose the wrong words there, so yes you are correct. I had meant underemployment.

Someone asked about the college that has the no-work for freshman restriction. I was looking through my neighbor's college guides that the high school gave him and saw that restriction. I looked at schools in California, Vermont and Mass. so it has to have been one of those. When I've found which it was, I'll share.

I know there are restrictions on athletes with scholarships holding jobs during the season/academic year, but I've never heard of restrictions on freshmen and jobs. In fact, I've heard the opposite -- encouraging freshmen to hold a job or join groups so they don't have too much free time on their hands. The more scheduled a student is, the tendency to do better academically. So this is definitely news to me.

I wouldn't bet the farm that these are all online writing jobs either . . . ;-)

Colleen,
I grew up in Sydney Mines!

If you have two gigs, more will definitely follow. The first few are the hardest. Best wishes with your writing.

Hey Booboo! PEI here, but I spent my first 7 years in Sydney and I'm a St. FX grad with two post grad diploma's. I was making 9 bucks an hour in retail. My husband works out in the oilsands of Alberta and it was actually his idea for me to quit and try to make a living at writing. Like I said, I have two gigs but am finding it hard breaking in beyond that. But I'll keep at it because it's what I want to do. And since I did a minor in English it's nice to be using my degree!

Hey Colleen,

What part of Canada are you from? I'm in NS, and underemployment is huge. I've seen job ads looking for people with degrees and years of experience offering $10/hour.

I left teaching because I hated it, and now I make decent money as a full-time writer. I would consider going back to a regular full-time job, but none of the salaries are high enough around here.

Under-employment is an issue where I am in Canada, so much that my husband doesn't work in the province where we live. Our government keeps slapping itself on the back for job creation, but the positions are all part time minimum wage.
For example, I quit a decent paying fulltime job to start a writing career. With the two small contracts I have, I'm making only 200 dollars less a month than I was.
Now, if I could only figure out how to get more contracts. :0)

@ Princess. Funny you should mention that ad. I'd originally been interested but then noticed it listed under several different locations on Craiglist, sometimes mentioning a random industry, other times with no mention. It started to smell of scam.

I'd say underemployment is a problem, but unemployment...no. I'm from what is commonly described in the news as an 'economically depressed area,' yet places like Wal-Mart cannot find workers.

Unemployment is bad everywhere

:D

There are up and coming societies all over the planet that say otherwise. At least 2 or 3 large countries are going through MAJOR economic growth as they mechanize and get involved in modern civilization and technology.

That's not to say that it's good everywhere, because it's not. But to make un-researched and incorrect blanket statements like "unemployment is bad everywhere" does not serve any purpose. :)

Unemployment is bad everywhere. I live in Latin America and people are willing to work for call centres which make them work six days a week for four hundred dollars a month and no vacations. Ever.
Outsourcing is a big issue, but that's why we can't discount regular magazine jobs either, they pay bettter and are more willing to pay for quality.

Matt,
I agree with your general premise. Perhaps what was unsaid is that for COLLEGE STUDENTS, summer employment opportunities are expected to be at historic lows.

The job advertised for freelance writers for romance website has been online for 2 weeks now. I have responded to the ad but still have not heard anything and it is still online. This is frustrating.

I am interested in getting into blogging, any advice how I can land a good blogging job?

Brandi, you're probably right about why she said that.

I thought about it, but decided I wasn't going to bring up the 1930's rates, because that was WAY high.

Just the numbers from the 1990's were enough of a comparison to realize that the only reason people aren't working right now is because they don't want to be working.

@Matt: You're definitely right, and I knew that even without the numbers. Obviously we're not approaching the type of unemployment out there in the early 1930s. I would assume Ann meant that as wages remain stagnant for segments of the economy, those people are looking for ways to supplement their income, though I'd like to believe few of them actually are competing with people who've been writing for ages.

@Ann: What kind of colleges are those? I would never send my children to such a school. I went to a selective private university as an undergrad and a large public uni in grad school, and I've never, ever heard of colleges forbidding undergraduates from working. I know law schools and med schools do it, but freshman year of college is a cakewalk academically.

I've been scratching my head trying to figure out what prompted to you make that claim, Ann. I couldn't figure it out, so I've done a wee bit of research, and came up with the following error code:

Error 445: Record High Unemployment Not Found

:D

According to the Department of Labor, exactly one state, Michigan, is at or above 7% unemployment (7.1% to be exact).

The record high national average over the last 2 decades was OVER 7.5% back in the early 90's. (That means several states were well over that number.)

How does that translate to record high unemployment today???

(Reply didn't post, so I removed links that reference my numbers to enable posting. If this same post shows up with links, that's why. :D )

@Maryam - I think there are many reasons. First, competing for online writing jobs is worldwide, not just regional. You're competing with people from other areas of the world, India is a biggie, where they are willing to work for a minimal amount. Another issue is that unemployment in many areas of the U.S. are at all-time highs. People are looking for work where they can get it. I have a neighbor who works full time, writes at night and on the weekends to supplement her income.

I also know that area college students all look for writing jobs in the summer and during the school year. Many of the area colleges around me have restrictions on freshmen taking jobs. They don't want it to conflict with homework and class time. Students are using online writing to earn money without the school knowing. Someone can lock themselves up in their dorm room with a computer and work and the house parent never sees him or her leave, so there is no concern that the student is holding a job.
