How Celebrity Bloggers Can Set Themselves Apart

Yesterday I talked about using your competition as a guide for setting your blog apart from the rest. Today I’d like to talk about one over-saturated niche where I don’t see much of anything new going on at all: celebrity blogs. Celebrity blogs can be very popular and lucrative, just look at Perez Hilton, PopCrunch or TMZ. The problem is, with dozens of new celebrity blogs starting every day, they’re all starting to look the same. Each one reports on the same bit of news, without having anything new to say. Why would I want to visit a blog saying [Read more…]

Using Your Past Experience to Leverage Your Freelance Writing Career

by Marijke Durning People often ask me how I made the transition of being an RN to a full-time, work-from-home writer. They ask me in a tone as if I did something magical and how on earth did I manage it? There’s no magic or deep dark secret to making such a career change; it takes the will and the (sometimes unintentional) guts to make the plunge. Sometimes, the decision is made for you. There are many freelancers in all types of work who freelance because they lost their job and either they couldn’t face the idea of finding another [Read more…]

10 Ways to Let Your Competition Be Your Guide

I’m always hesitant to use the word "competition" to describe other bloggers in my niche. I always like to look at them as colleagues in which to share ideas and community rather than the person whose traffic I should be stealing. For the purpose of today’s blog post, we’ll allow it just this one time. If there’s one thing I learned with Freelance Writing Jobs is that if you have a popular blog, others will want to do the same exact thing. It used to frustrate me, but I decided to use this to my advantage. Rather get frustrated with [Read more…]

Why Freelance Writers Should Apply to Full-Time Jobs

by Yuwanda Black Many freelance writers spend time applying only to freelance job listings. I’ve been a freelance writer since 1993 and I apply to these job listings and to full-time jobs as well. Why? For three reasons. Before I detail my reasons, let me give you a little background. I owned an editorial staffing agency in New York City from 1996-2004. I recruited editors, writers, graphic design artists, etc. for many different types of companies. From major publishers like Random House and McGraw Hill, to nonprofits like the National Kidney Foundation, to small graphic design firms, I’ve dealt with [Read more…]

Moreover, the guest bloggers are experiencing some cool bennies as well. Benefits of Having a Guest Blogger at Your Blog It frees you up for other things – Though I didn’t [Read more…]

The Luxury of No

by Sue Poremba   Last summer I was at a party, talking to a freelance graphic artist. One of the things we talked about was how tough freelancing can be. He said that non-freelancers don’t realize that you have to take what you can get, that this isn’t a career where you have the luxury to say no to assignments. Once upon a time, I used to agree with that. I was so desparate for money I would take any job, no matter how miniscule the pay.  To me the important thing was showing my husband the paycheck and prove [Read more…]

Are You Playing Blog Favorites?

Most probloggers I know have plenty of blogs at any given time. In fact, most bloggers I know have five or more blogs. Right now I have about 8 blogs that are currently being updated, plus I also need to network them. What happens when I don’t pay attention, is I start playing favorites. By playing favorites, what I mean is that at the blogs I like best I may… Post more often. Post higher quality posts. Use my best material for said favorite blog, even though it might fit at another blog. Network that blog like a manic. Make [Read more…]

Repeat To Self: Food, Sleep, Exercise Are Not Time Wasters

We’ve got two major time wasters leftover from last week. I’m saving my worst sin, “Getting side tracked while posting” for last. Today let’s talk about work breaks and everyday life stuff, like sleep, meals, and exercise. Breaks, sleeping, eating, and exercise are things I don’t have a lot of time for when I’m in full work mode, so I tend to consider them time wasters. However, they’re not really time wasters, are they? If I avoid them, my work suffers. Obviously we can function on very little sleep, food, and exercise when we want, but it’s just not healthy. 5 Paramount Principles for Freelance Writing Success

by Bob Younce One of the things I hear most often as a writing mentor is, "I need to make some money, fast." My response is always the same: "Go get yourself an application for McDonald’s. Freelance writing isn’t a job; it’s a small business, and small businesses take time to get off the ground." It’s true that the Internet writing market has made it easier to freelance. And, if you’re reading this blog, you already know how to find great freelance job resources. But, like any other small business, freelance writing takes time. Three Differences in Writing for the Web vs. Print

by Char Polanosky One of the biggest challenges for a traditional writer, journalist or even copy editor in today’s marketplace is understanding the difference between writing for print and writing for the web. The three biggest differences and the reasons behind them are: 1. When writing for print, the final product can be controlled. You work with a designer or editor to control where lines break, leading, kerning, how text wraps around an image and other placement details. However, when it comes to the web, much of this control goes out the window – there are just too many variables. [Read more…]

5 Mistakes New Bloggers Should Avoid

In the three years I’ve been blogging I’ve seen other bloggers come and go. I’d say about seventy five percent of the bloggers I’ve seen start out have disappeared when things didn’t work out. The ones who took the time to do it right are the bloggers who have been around for a long time. The ones who didn’t last all seem to make the same mistakes. In case you’re just starting out in this business here are a few common mistakes newbie bloggers should avoid. 1. Thinking Blogging Will Make You Rich Right Away Though certain bloggers do make [Read more…]

Want more money? Offer more value

by Matt Ambrose Breaking free from the conveyer belt of keyword articles and into the plush realm of well paid writing is one of an aspiring freelance writer’s biggest challenges. The traditional route is to knuckle down and slowly build your credibility until you attract clients happy to pay for the quality that comes from experience. However, the role of the writer is evolving so fast that rewards are there to be won if you can offer value beyond your words. People now spend hours on the web searching for product information. Writers who can provide info so it’s engaging [Read more…]
