Louise, don't faint, but I'm agreeing with you.

Telecommute to mean work away from the office. Not all companies are web based - but you can work at home using the company's intranet connection or by emailing, etc.

As Louise said, many of these businesses prefer someone who is local - or at least someone willing to come in every now and then for meetings.

Different companies have different expectations. I work for a company without a brick and mortar building - though it has a very major web presence. My mom telecommuted for years writing textbooks for accountants - and her company didn't have a web presence at all. She had to go in now and then to meet with her team.

So even if a company allows telecommuting it doesn't mean web based. Freelancing and telecommting mean two different things.

Now, with that said, most of the gigs marked "telecommute" on Craigslist can be done anywhere with an Internet connection. Plus many people who are looking to work from home writing, blogging, editing, etc., wouldn't mind having a stable, steady permanant telecommuting gig - which is why we feature them here. REally anything you can do from your home office.

From my experience, "telecommute" does not always mean you can do the job from anywhere with an Internet connection. Some ads clearly state that preference will be given to people liviing in a certain city. Other companies only tell you this after you apply. Still other companies prefer people in the same time zone, such as on the West Coast or Pacific NW or whatever. Some telecommuting jobs only want US citizens. I have found several jobs that can be done from anywhere, but it is interesting that some never used the word telecommute in the ad.

I have used firefox before when a client recommended it to enter my content on to his site.

I fell in love with it right then and there, very user friendly and easy to resolve situations.

@ Julie F and Jodee:

I use Firefox, and with it you can right-click on links to get the option to open the link in a new window or tab.

As I go down each day's gig listing here, I simply right-click on each one that I want to check out, and select the new tab option.

Another tip: Craigslist ads have an option in the upper right hand corner to be emailed. The entire ad will go in the body of the email. I email all the interesting ads to myself. It makes it easier for me to email resumes out en masse when I can just go down the list in my email of the pre-screened postings. That way, I also have a copy of the exact ad, too.

I also have installed a button from clickability that allows me to email the other ads. They added a text limit, so I cant always copy and paste the entire ad, but the email contains the link to the ad, so I copy the relevant stuff and email it to myself.

Emailing myself ads works especially well if I need to do the cover letter and resume thing at a later time in the day. I go to my inbox and all the gigs are there, easily scrolled down and applied for.

I know it may sound like a lot of work, but actually this method streamlined the process quite a bit for me.

Also with Firefox, if something happens to the power or my browser window, it gives me the option when I am up and running again to re-open closed tabs, so I don't lose what I was just looking at.

I love Firefox. If you check out Jimmyrcon on Youtube you can get the scoop on some cool new features coming up in the new version of Firefox. He shows how to use them, what to do to use them, etc. He also gives all the links you need. He has even developed a cool add-on for translating text on websites into other languages. His videos are very educational and user-friendly.

I'm just starting my career as a freelance writer and I've found your website to be invaluable. Thank you so much for taking the time to help all us writers who are looking for ways to express ourselves and put a little money in our pocket. Great site, great list. Thanks!

To open a page in a new window, just type in target=new after the end of the url and behind the last " that's at the end of the url.

And nice list! :)

@ Julie F: Thank you for your kind words! :)

Re the new window thing: I am not a techie by any stretch of the imagination so I will let Deb respond to that when she gets a chance. In the meantime, you might want to open a second browser window and have FWJ on both of them. That way, you can have the main page accessible and check out the job lead links too. Does that help at all?

Hi Jodee, I love being able to come to the site and see the listings so early. It really helps me get my day started right!

I do have a question. When I click on the links, I am redirected and leave FWJ. Would you ever consider having the links open in a new window? It would make it easy to click on several, but still be able to read FWJ at the same time.

Great list Jodee. Just a warning, I've replied to the "Health and Fitness Writers Wanted" ad on Craigslist before, they actually want you to do data processing. It really has nothing to do with writing.
