thanks for the list
I have 20 months of blogging experience and whenever I write for real cheap rates (just to let the word out that I am a good writer) people do appreciate my writings and my hardwork.
I have been applying to such jobs for last 20 days and still didn’t crack any as I don’t have a resume.
I have a resume to show to companies when I apply for the position of software engineer. I used mine to get a job in ACCENTURE but I don’t have a online resume to showcase my writing skills.
could anyone suggest tips on how to create a online resume. I am looking hard for a writing job and I hope i get one soon
What I use for my resume for online applications is google documents. It is free and can be edited often. What I do is write down my experiences, dates ect. and give examples. Perhaps links to the blogs you have written for or if you can an example of one of your blog posts. I know some people have created an online portfolio via free websites or blogs listing their experience with sample work.
Hey there–
I have a request. I would love to see a blog post about how to create a contract for your services.
I am NOT the most law-savvy lady, and I definitely need some guidance regarding this.
Thanks
@ Katrina: I’ve made a note of your request and added it to my list.
Salman, I don’t know much about online resumes. But it seems like it should be easy to build a resume in a Word doc and then transfer it to the Web somewhere. Shells has some good advice. When I apply for writing or editing gigs, I just use my regular resume, but I have a “Writing/Editing Experience” section and a special “Publications” section that I use to list all of my clients and publication credits. You might try something like that.
great list
How can young college students get that first job.
So far its proven pretty tough for me when I’m compared to some of you older professionals. Since I write about everything, I’m not an EXPERT at anything other than writing.
@ Carly: depending on what program you use to transfer your resume to the web, MSWord can cause a lot of problems.
To you and me, a Word.doc looks like just a bunch of letters and spaces, but the code for justifying the margins, making things bold, underlined, italics, etc. is all interpreted differently by your Internet Browser than by your word program.
So you could spend a lot of time getting everything just right in your resume, only to have it appear as utter garbage on the web.
It can certainly be done, but be wary of working in Word.
Adam, there I go again, falling victim to the foibles of the PC world. I’m a Mac person, so I prefer NOT to work in Word whenever possible.
Thanks for the warning.
I set up my own website. My writing work is my business, so I keep links to work, client feedback, my resume, and other work-related things on it.
When I send out cover letters, I explain why I am qualified and give appropriate links to the various sections of my website. When new stuff is published that can be linked to, I update my website.
When I get new work, new certifications and honors, or anything else that may look appealing to a prospective employer/client, I add it to my website.
My website is not only great as a source of information for potential employers/clients, but it is a database of information for me, as well.
When I have down-time (work is slow) I go through and clean up my blogs and my website. I check links, change the template, re-organize, add new features, or do whatever else will help make my site look more professional, streamlined, and user-friendly.
I have found, for me, that having a website helps a lot when applying for writing jobs.
I concur with Dani’s comments about having a Web site. It’s a lot of work and stress to create one, but it’s worth the effort: you can send links to resumes, writing samples, and other items that potential clients might want. Having all that available online saves a tremendous amount of time when I apply for jobs and send out marketing e-letters.
Ace,
Being a young college student is actually a great thing to be in this biz. Lots of sites are aimed at people just like you so if you can write, you should be able to work.
As for not being an expert – become one. Pick one thing you like and hone in on it. Editors like to see someone who is focused.
Has anyone tried to apply to the Online Luxury Retailer?
I exchanged a couple of emails with the principal, he gave me an assignment without acknowledging my rates, apparently expecting a free sample…
The strange thing is that I’m having this sense of deja vu, an unpaid one unfortunately, — but I know this is the first time I apply to this gig.
Still, I’m thinking about taking a chance.
Any advice/suggestions would be very appreciated.
Ace: I’m in the same boat as well as I recently graduated from college! I love to write–I guess my niche would be transplantation, music because I love to buy cd’s, and poetry, I’m about to start looking into the greeting card market.
Cynthia do you have any of those sites that you mentioned that are aimed at those of us with wet feet so to speak? I just love to write, but my passion is really about race relations and solving them…
Well, in today’s list there is a call out for college students:
Bloggers/Posters for New College Website ($10/hour + Bonuses)
I see ads all the time. Or you can find blogs and websites that speak to your passion and hit them up.
It’s more about your passion than your age. After all, no one knows how old you are online unless you tell them.
If you want a blogging job, but don’t have clips or experience per se, just start your own blog. You can use it as an example of your blogging skills and your personal blogging style.
Put ads on it to earn a little money (little being the keyword here, lol), and add features like subscription by email and reader.
Show you are talented and a pro with your own blog while you try to land that paid blogging gig, and you will increase your odds for success.
Cynthia:
You are absolutely right! I replied to an ad about a magazine that was geared toward exploring race relations w/in the U.S. and healing them. They specified that they wanted seasoned writers and I argued that I am seasoned since I have an English degree, and am a writer. Hopefully, they will contact me!
I also make it a point never to mention my age. Thanks.
Regards Writer Needed for Medical Site – LOL if you are looking for a professional writer, you should know how to spell ‘professional’ first.
I know there are some aspiring children’s book authors on this blog. I came across this job and thought I would pass it along. I would be careful about sending a sample though – you might want to ask to sign an NDA first. (Sorry if Jodee already posted it and I missed it).

Hey, I just wanted to thankyou for this awesome website! I just quite my day job, in a crazy leap of faith to try my hand at earning next semester’s tuition money by the pen alone. I’ve found this resource invaluable, as I slog through hundreds of CraigsList entries and query every imaginable literary magazine, in keeping the cash coming and the parents off the back.
A note to the two college students above who ask about the viability of there own writing skills–don’t you believe for a moment you can’t succeed in this game. I’ve only been at it a few days and I already have several paying writing gigs. Just be bold in your queries and put your best into every assignment! And for sure start your own website!
