Hey, I just wanted to thankyou for this awesome website! I just quite my day job, in a crazy leap of faith to try my hand at earning next semester’s tuition money by the pen alone. I’ve found this resource invaluable, as I slog through hundreds of CraigsList entries and query every imaginable literary magazine, in keeping the cash coming and the parents off the back.

A note to the two college students above who ask about the viability of there own writing skills–don’t you believe for a moment you can’t succeed in this game. I’ve only been at it a few days and I already have several paying writing gigs. Just be bold in your queries and put your best into every assignment! And for sure start your own website!

You are absolutely right! I replied to an ad about a magazine that was geared toward exploring race relations w/in the U.S. and healing them. They specified that they wanted seasoned writers and I argued that I am seasoned since I have an English degree, and am a writer. Hopefully, they will contact me! I also make it a point never to mention my age. Thanks.

If you want a blogging job, but don’t have clips or experience per se, just start your own blog. You can use it as an example of your blogging skills and your personal blogging style.

Put ads on it to earn a little money (little being the keyword here, lol), and add features like subscription by email and reader.

Show you are talented and a pro with your own blog while you try to land that paid blogging gig, and you will increase your odds for success.

I see ads all the time. Or you can find blogs and websites that speak to your passion and hit them up.

It’s more about your passion than your age. After all, no one knows how old you are online unless you tell them.

Ace: I’m in the same boat as well as I recently graduated from college! I love to write–I guess my niche would be transplantation, music because I love to buy cd’s, and poetry, I’m about to start looking into the greeting card market.

Cynthia do you have any of those sites that you mentioned that are aimed at those of us with wet feet so to speak? I just love to write, but my passion is really about race relations and solving them…

Has anyone tried to apply to the Online Luxury Retailer?

I exchanged a couple of emails with the principal, he gave me an assignment without acknowledging my rates, apparently expecting a free sample…

The strange thing is that I’m having this sense of deja vu, an unpaid one unfortunately, — but I know this is the first time I apply to this gig.

Still, I’m thinking about taking a chance.

Any advice/suggestions would be very appreciated.

Being a young college student is actually a great thing to be in this biz. Lots of sites are aimed at people just like you so if you can write, you should be able to work.

As for not being an expert – become one. Pick one thing you like and hone in on it. Editors like to see someone who is focused.

I concur with Dani’s comments about having a Web site. It’s a lot of work and stress to create one, but it’s worth the effort: you can send links to resumes, writing samples, and other items that potential clients might want. Having all that available online saves a tremendous amount of time when I apply for jobs and send out marketing e-letters.
