I’m as anti-drug as they come, but I really enjoyed On Writing. King is very up front about his addictions, and he’s gone on to have successful books AFTER he became clean and sober. He also debunks the myth that writers/artists/musicians drink because that’s the only true way they can be creative.

How did I miss this when you first posted it? I absolutely adore SK! I’ve read On Writing a couple of times and it really helped me once I decided to crank out my first novel. And this past Christmas I read that book he talks about – the one that makes you say, “That really sucks.” He’s a man who speaks truth.

And this would be why I love SK! He’s so funny. I read Entertainment Weekly and occasionally he’ll write a column at the end of the mag. It’s never any fun for me the weeks he doesn’t! I haven’t read his book, On Writing, and now I feel like a disappoint as a fan, lol. I’ll be going to pick it up immediately!!!!

Thank you for posting this. SK has been my favorite writer since I was about 14 years old. Thanks also for reminding me about On Writing. I need to go back and re-read that book.

I agree – On Writing is the best book I’ve read about writing. I almost didn’t read it because one review said it was geared towards fiction writers. I’m glad I did though. It really inspired me.

Great video, I make a point to read and write something daily. It’s been a part of my routine since I was a child. I cannot imagine not doing it. I’ve definitely seen improvements.

On Writing is an excellent book. I always thought some of his books, like The Shining, were based on personal experiences. Besides, his advice I really enjoyed the how open he was in talking about his addictions. My only regret is I did not originally purchase it in hardcover. I’ve read all the books he’s written as Stephen King (Duma Key is one of my favorites) and Richard Bachman.

I too have read his book On Writing as well as the book he recommended, E B Strunk and White’s Elements of Style. Stephen King is one of my favorite writers and it is his imagination coupled with his writing skills that makes him fantastic. Great Post and I enjoy reading your blog every day.

If you’ve never read his book ON WRITING, it’s one of the best writing guides out there IMO. One thing that bothers me though is that the books of King’s that I love most were written when he was drugged up or drunk. I have little to no tolerance for drugs and after learning that one of my favorite writers can’t remember writing a few of his books because of coke or alcohol, it lessened my opinion of him really. I’m glad he’s kicked the habit, but it’s sad that he went there in the first place.
