Did anyone else apply for the “Freelance Writers for SEO Company” gig?

I’m pretty new to this, and I had a question about posts like the “Freelance Writers for SEO Company” entry above.

Are sites like this – content farm type opportunities – legitimate? I’m always alarmed by the big, bright “WORK FROM HOME” bit in the listing, but I’ve heard that sites like this do pay. Any experience with similar gigs?

Genesis, you would need a work visa. Or at least that’s how I interpret it. I’ve been wrong before.

Wendy, I saw that listing over the weekend and had considered applying but decided against it. But I did notice that the site in the ad redirects to sexcrimescounsel.com, which seems to be the law firm’s website. Maybe they haven’t redirected their email address over yet? That site lists a phone number, and a different email address. Good luck, if you go for it.

I’m Canadian, and usually work for people in the U.S. I would say you wouldn’t qualify for a job stating you must be authorized to work in the U.S. In my experience, these companies require you to have a SSN or a tax id.

I want to apply for the Leisure activities one . . . but they say you have to be authorized to work in the US. I`m not really sure what that means, I live in Guatemala but have never had issues working with Americans before. Anyone care to enlighten me?

The listing regarding writing movie reviews etc. for a New York magazine had a similar issue. I emailed, and the reply was to go to three dating sites and write reviews. You had to sign up for the dating sites in order to access them, though, so I didn’t do it. I suspect the person placing the ad was doing the same thing…trying to boost traffic to those sites.

I agree with Colleen, that ad was very well written. Of course, I didn’t see mention of compensation and it sounds like they’re very particular about what they want. I’d love to hear about it if someone gets the position!

Re: Poker Web Site Reviewer, I just thought I’d note that I’ve applied for that position with that email before and he immediately contacted me telling me to sign up with a specified online poker site, link provided, and then review it in 100 words and he’d be in touch. Thanks to another writing job, I have access to many of these sites without needing to create my own account. Once I’d sent him the sample review, I never heard back from him. I’m betting he’s using his affiliate account to boost his revenues.
