Lots of good news all around today! I applied this morning for the Script Writers/Photographers position, and this afternoon I was commissioned to develop four tours! I also submitted a story idea to Orato.com when you ran the ad a couple of weeks ago, and was recently notified that they want to purchase my story!

@Nicole: Apply for everything that interests you. I got stuck in a newbie mindset for nearly two years, and didn’t go for the jobs I really wanted. I started going for the big guns a couple of weeks ago, and it’s been paying off like crazy. Above all, work on your query letter…that’s your introduction to potential employers, so make every word count!

Oh, and Nicole, it’s all about who you know. Ask everyone you know if they have friends who need a writer – even if it’s press releases, Web content, professional bios. Then have them refer you to THEIR friends and business contacts as well. Word of mouth is amazing in the beginning.

Try Demand Studios. If you can write up a short sample article (maybe a “How To”), you can apply to make about $15 per short article on their Web site. They supply Web content to sites like Ehow.com. It doesn’t sound like much at first, but if you can turn out the article in an hour, it’s great money. Go to DemandStudios.com and click on a button to apply, upload a sample and wait and see! They were great to me when I was new to the game. They advertise on this site, so tell them you heard about them here!

@ Ann G., Lisa and Linden: Thanks for the creative support. I’m hoping with my own personal writing that in time I will gain more experience. I actually have good news, the editor at my local college I attend is wanting to meet up with me this afternoon for workshop information and a reporter spot. So keep your fingers crossed! Thanks ladies! Also, Linden I too love looking at all the jobs and reading what they want from freelancers. Amazing!

I love looking at all the job leads every morning! I, too, am trying to get started freelancing. I actually wrote advertorial articles for a newspaper for seven years, but never had a byline. Does anyone have any advice how to get belated credit for a large amount of work?

Nicole, I completely agree with Ann G. Just keep trying. I’m new to the freelance game myself officially but when I thought about it, I’ve been writing things for people for over a decade. I just didn’t know I was freelancing. Maybe you have clips you’ve never seen as clips before. Anyway, a few months ago I applied for a job that sounded so amazing. I worked really hard on my cover letter and tried to share samples that seemed relevant. (I found this job right here on FWJ, by the way) and I GOT THE JOB. Now because of that one job, others have trickled in. I’m still not sure I’m “qualified” but I’m doing it, darn it. I just jump in and do my very best and ask questions and keep moving. I’m sure you can do this, too. Good luck!

@Nicole- When I got started a few years ago, I’d been reviewing books for years for a few sites and that gave me writing clips I could use. I also used Epinions to show I could write about more than books. Since then, I apply for anything I am certain I could do and hope for the best. I’ve had two magazine articles published and a number of online articles, so if you keep applying for most anything, eventually something will come your way.

Hey Jodee: Great List today. I have a question for you, I don’t mean to offend anyone but are there freelance jobs out there for beginnners? I’m trying to get a start but it seems that most of these jobs are asking for more qualified freelancers.
