Freelance Writing and Blogging Jobs

by Deborah Ng

Once a year or so I like to update my list of places to find freelance writing and blogging jobs.  Since a few of the links of my list of 23 Places to Find Freelance Writing and Blogging jobs have fallen to the wayside, it seems like a good time for an update. Here it is:

22 Places to Find Freelance Writing and Blogging Jobs – 2008

  1. Freelance Writng Jobs - There’s a reason we’re the number one online community for freelance writers and bloggers. In addition to Jodee’s daily mega listings of jobs and Monday Markets, we also offer useful tips for the freelance job hunter and a helpful, congenial community.
  2. ProBlogger Job Board - Run by my friend Darren Rowse, the ProBlogger job board lists an assortment of blogging jobs every day, plus gigs for other web based work. While you’re there, check out Darren’s main blog with its invaluable advice.
  3. Craigslist - Craiglist gets a bad rap because of the scams and low paying jobs, but if you look hard enough you’ll find a few gems too. I found my Community Manager gig at Craigslist as well as numerous freelance writing and blogging jobs.
  4. About Freelance Writing - Anne Wayman combs the web three times a week to bring you an awesome listing of writing and blogging opportunities.
  5. PoeWar - Friend of FWJ, John Hewitt, spends a lot of his time finding great jobs and offering spot on tips and advice. If you don’t have Poewar bookmarked, stop what you’re doing right now and add it to your feeds. It’s ok. I’ll wait.
  6. Performancing - Performancing’s job forum has a great selection of writing jobs each week and the main website has all the tips and tricks to help a blogger succeed. An investment in the private Performancing Hive forum provides even more tips and opportunities.
  7. Freelance Switch - Great advice and a terrific job board.
  8. Indeed – A search engine for jobs.
  9. Freelance Writing - Another site that has been around for a while, Freelance Writing offers tips, markets and freelance writing jobs. Proceed with caution as it’s a haven for low payers and scammers.
  10. Blogger Jobs - Run by SplashPressMedia, Blogging Jobs lists several opportunities each week. Some are unique to the blog, while others are relisted from other sites. Heh. Sounds familiar…
  11. Media Bistro - Lists dozens of media opportunities each day including freelance writing jobs. Many of the bigger markets list here as well. Do add it to your daily or weekly lists.
  12. WAHM - The Work at Home Mom job board lists telecommuting jobs several days a week. Some of these jobs are for freelance writers.
  13. Absolute Write – Every now and then freelance writing jobs are posted on the forum.
  14. Journalism Jobs – I’ve been using this site for years. Not only does it list many permanent and in house opportunities, but there are plenty of gigs for freelancers too!
  15. All Freelance Writing – Uses an Indeed feed to list jobs which means there are many jobs for full time and even non-writing opportunities. Still, there are plenty of freelancing opportunties.
  16. Writer Find - A good resource for both domestic and international freelance writing jobs.
  17. Media Job Board – Lists media gigs for both national and international markets – some freelance.
  18. The Write Jobs – List both freelance and permanent opportunities.
  19. Sunoasis Jobs – Lists some good opportunities. Some jobs are very old though.
  20. CopyBlogger Jobs – Has the occasional opportunity for freelancers.
  21. Jobster - A job search engine.

  1. Nice writing style. I look forward to reading more in the future.

  2. Phil says:

Good list. I’m biased and would move Journalism Jobs much higher. My biggest current client (including steady and quick pay) came from there.

Though I haven’t landed anything from Angela Hoy’s newsletter, it might deserve higher mention because it does have solid (unlike many in some other sites) leads with excellent additional info.

I have landed one item through here (Wisconsin Appraisal newsletter) and when the first check comes in in a few months (it’s a quarterly), you will be receiving a donation.

  3. Dani says:

Thank you so much for the great list, Deb!

    Way to go, Phil!

If I understand correctly, ad-clicking here is another way to financially support this site as well – for those who are struggling to make ends meet but really want to say ‘thanks’. Deb, please correct me if I am wrong. :-)

  4. Fiona says:

Great list Deb and I think every time you publish a list I still find a new resource there that I haven’t considered in the past. As you mention, Craigslist gets a bad rap but I have found some great clients there.

  5. Megatron says:

Deb, this is great. Thank you so much.

  6. Amy Derby says:

Thanks for the updated list, Deb. :-)

  7. Jeff says:

Thanks for the list Deb! I think it would be interesting to have the list given an option to vote/rank, such as a +/- system. While opinions may lead to arguements, I think a group of serious writers and readers from FWJ would be able to give honest and helpful opinions. Just a thought :)

  8. Christi says:

Deb, thank you for the helpful resource. I’ve been a reader for a long time, and this is why I keep coming back — simple, accessible, and helpful information. Thanks so much.

  9. christine says:

I’ve bookmarked several of the sites listed here. Thanks for the resources, you’re the best!

  10. Lovely! I can’t remember if I got my first job from Angela Hoy or from freelancewritinggigs, but either way I love you both. You put together a great list! There are some websites that I’ll absolutely have to try. Can I add one more though? I get a ton of good paying work from oDesk.com. The majority of jobs there pay very well. I still come back to you guys for all my encouragement and advice!
    ~Colleen

  11. Fiona says:

I had the opposite experience with oDesk. People who said they wanted me to do work and then never got back to me. Plus people wanted the lowest bidder.

  12. Victoria says:

    Great list! :)
Although I haven’t had any luck with ‘Indeed’ myself….

  13. Bill Johnson says:

    Deb is lying again.

    According to Alexa.com:

    FreelanceWritingGigs.com is ranked 76, 322

    ProBlogger.net is ranked 25,210

    Indeed.com is ranked 1,054

Deb’s website is FAR from being the number one site for writer jobs, not even close. The old girl is lying like Bush.

  14. Deb says:

Hi Bill and welcome to the FWJ community. Thank you for your kind comment, that’s why we’re here – to help each other and make sure our community members don’t walk off with the wrong information.

ProBlogger is a blog and job board for bloggers only, not freelance writers. Indeed is a search engine for all kinds of jobs, not only freelance writing jobs.

Freelance Writing Jobs is a blog and community for freelance writers. That’s the difference. We really are the number one community specifically geared towards freelance writers.

I can see though why you would think I made a mistake and thank you for looking out for the FWJ community.

P.S. Thank you also for taking time out of your very busy schedule to look up all this information for us!

    Have a very nice day.

  15. Shermika says:

Thanks so much for this list!!!

  16. Deb says:

Glad most of you liked the list. As you know, Jodee and I would prefer you stated at FWJ for all your job leads, but we know many of you do your own searches as well. This list should cover all the bases – And don’t rule out your local newspapers as well as major job sites such as Monster and Career Builder.

  17. Leigh says:

I don’t want to cause a ruckus, but I feel compelled to write a rebuttal to Mr. Johnson’s allegations. For one, no one ever said Freelance Writing Jobs had the most traffic, and I believe Alex is a traffic stat application. Second, Alexa is inherently flawed in several ways. Small changes in traffic can significantly change an Alexa ranking. Third, as Deb pointed out, more general sites are going to have more traffic because they appeal to a wider audience. ProBlogger has tips for bloggers, a blogging job board, etc. It’s not just for freelance writers. Indeed is a job search engine – it’s going to appeal to anyone searching for a job in any field – HR, technology, writing, business, administrative assistance, etc. It is not just for freelance writers. It’s like comparing apples to oranges.

And I find it very disrespectful that you would refer to someone like Deb as “old dog.” Deb’s blog is a trusted resource for writers and Deb spends a lot of time providing information that has helped many people.

  18. Bill Johnson says:

    Deb,

Your absurd claim that bloggers are not freelance writers is ridiculous. What do you think blogging is? Horse racing? It’s writing!

But let’s pretend you’re right, you list Media Bistro as a place for freelance writers, that site ranks WAY AHEAD OF YOU at 5,388 on Alexa.com, the INDUSTRY STANDARD for site rankings.

Media Bistro IS a community for freelance writers and has MULTIPLE message boards.

JUST FOR THE RECORD, Problogger.net is a community and many people exchange comments JUST AS THEY DO on your web site.

Also CraigsList.org has a forum for writing, that’s a writing community too. You are way behind CraigsList.org which is ranked at 39 on Alexa.com.

BTW what kind of person lists their own site ON their site as the number one site for freelance writers? Is the old girl just patting herself on the back, again, to shore up her insecurities?

Your web site is also FAR BEHIND CraigsList.org

  19. Deb says:

    Hi Bill,

Thanks for writing again, I think you may be missing the point. I didn’t say bloggers aren’t freelance writers. But ProBlogger is a blog for bloggers – they learn SEO techniques, monetization strategies and more. Darren isn’t discussing freelance writing. He doesn’t talk about queries and cover letters or landing clients. He’s talking about being a professional blogger – and bloggers can be freelance writers but that’s not what ProBlogger is and it’s not what it’s about. He doesn’t touch on the subject of blogging jobs very often.

Media Bistro is a community for people who work for the Media. In addition to classes and articles they list jobs for writers (not only freelance), graphic artists, cameramen and more. Again, not specifically freelance writers. I didn’t list it “as a place for freelance writers” I listed it as a place to find freelance writing and blogging jobs – among others.

Craigslist is a classified ads community. It’s not a community ONLY for freelance writers.

I suppose we can argue about this back and forth but it doesn’t make much difference and I don’t dig the vibe. You come here often under assumed names and identities to pick apart what I try to do here and it’s clear you’re never going to quite be satisfied. I, we, worked hard to build up FWJ from a little blogspot blog to what it is today and I enjoy what it’s become – the number online community for freelance writers. I’m sorry it makes you so angry you feel the need to come here and minimize what we do.

My suggestion to you is to take up knitting or another peaceful hobby and visit the blogs and websites that don’t cause you as much stress.

    Have a nice day.

  20. Jenn says:

    Deb, you’re awesome.

  21. LisaB. says:

    Deb-

I come back here time and time again for tips, job leads, and just to be with other writers. You have provided a great resource and “hang-out” for many.

I hate to give Mr. Bill (hmmmm – just like the play dough guy!) any more space on this site but…If he is such an authority and has such strong opinions why isn’t his website one of the top ranked?!!!! Those who know, do…those who don’t, spew garbage and waste other’s time!

    Keep up the great work!

  22. christine says:

I think Mr. Johnson’s Caps Lock Key is on.

I come here every morning for the job lists, and for the great articles. Deb and Jodee definitely do an outstanding job of creating a community for writers. The rank, according to dubious stats, is pretty irrelevant when you look at how many people are coming in and saying they got jobs, and participating in the discussion.

  23. Jenny B says:

Thank you for the list Deb.

  24. Freelance says:

Great post! I’d like to point out that with a little Google search knowledge you can use Google alerts to help you find jobs also, it will automatically send an email when it finds a match. If you use opearator tags you can poll Craigslist with a tag such as this…

“wriitng” OR “write” OR “writer” -serv site:craigslist.org

  25. Kathy says:

Thanks Deb! Try our newly launched writing job board: http://www.BeMyWriter.com. Clients can post writing jobs for free and writers can place bids for free. Please give us a try and send us your feedback. Thanks! Kathy

  26. Gary says:

    Thanks Deb for your list.

I would like to get other opinions about Elance. The compensation appears to be very poor. Does any one have a different view?

    Thanks.

    Gary

  27. Pro-vamsi says:

    Great post mate!!
I think I should find a good part time job from this page!!
