Great post! I’d like to point out that with a little Google search knowledge you can use Google alerts to help you find jobs also, it will automatically send an email when it finds a match. If you use opearator tags you can poll Craigslist with a tag such as this…

I come here every morning for the job lists, and for the great articles. Deb and Jodee definitely do an outstanding job of creating a community for writers. The rank, according to dubious stats, is pretty irrelevant when you look at how many people are coming in and saying they got jobs, and participating in the discussion.

I come back here time and time again for tips, job leads, and just to be with other writers. You have provided a great resource and “hang-out” for many.

I hate to give Mr. Bill (hmmmm – just like the play dough guy!) any more space on this site but…If he is such an authority and has such strong opinions why isn’t his website one of the top ranked?!!!! Those who know, do…those who don’t, spew garbage and waste other’s time!

Hi Bill,

Thanks for writing again, I think you may be missing the point. I didn’t say bloggers aren’t freelance writers. But ProBlogger is a blog for bloggers – they learn SEO techniques, monetization strategies and more. Darren isn’t discussing freelance writing. He doesn’t talk about queries and cover letters or landing clients. He’s talking about being a professional blogger – and bloggers can be freelance writers but that’s not what ProBlogger is and it’s not what it’s about. He doesn’t touch on the subject of blogging jobs very often.

Media Bistro is a community for people who work for the Media. In addition to classes and articles they list jobs for writers (not only freelance), graphic artists, cameramen and more. Again, not specifically freelance writers. I didn’t list it “as a place for freelance writers” I listed it as a place to find freelance writing and blogging jobs – among others.

Craigslist is a classified ads community. It’s not a community ONLY for freelance writers.

I suppose we can argue about this back and forth but it doesn’t make much difference and I don’t dig the vibe. You come here often under assumed names and identities to pick apart what I try to do here and it’s clear you’re never going to quite be satisfied. I, we, worked hard to build up FWJ from a little blogspot blog to what it is today and I enjoy what it’s become – the number online community for freelance writers. I’m sorry it makes you so angry you feel the need to come here and minimize what we do.

My suggestion to you is to take up knitting or another peaceful hobby and visit the blogs and websites that don’t cause you as much stress.

Your absurd claim that bloggers are not freelance writers is ridiculous. What do you think blogging is? Horse racing? It’s writing!

But let’s pretend you’re right, you list Media Bistro as a place for freelance writers, that site ranks WAY AHEAD OF YOU at 5,388 on Alexa.com, the INDUSTRY STANDARD for site rankings.

Media Bistro IS a community for freelance writers and has MULTIPLE message boards.

JUST FOR THE RECORD, Problogger.net is a community and many people exchange comments JUST AS THEY DO on your web site.

Also CraigsList.org has a forum for writing, that’s a writing community too. You are way behind CraigsList.org which is ranked at 39 on Alexa.com.

BTW what kind of person lists their own site ON their site as the number one site for freelance writers? Is the old girl just patting herself on the back, again, to shore up her insecurities?

Your web site is also FAR BEHIND CraigsList.org

I don’t want to cause a ruckus, but I feel compelled to write a rebuttal to Mr. Johnson’s allegations. For one, no one ever said Freelance Writing Jobs had the most traffic, and I believe Alex is a traffic stat application. Second, Alexa is inherently flawed in several ways. Small changes in traffic can significantly change an Alexa ranking. Third, as Deb pointed out, more general sites are going to have more traffic because they appeal to a wider audience. ProBlogger has tips for bloggers, a blogging job board, etc. It’s not just for freelance writers. Indeed is a job search engine – it’s going to appeal to anyone searching for a job in any field – HR, technology, writing, business, administrative assistance, etc. It is not just for freelance writers. It’s like comparing apples to oranges.

And I find it very disrespectful that you would refer to someone like Deb as “old dog.” Deb’s blog is a trusted resource for writers and Deb spends a lot of time providing information that has helped many people.

This list should cover all the bases – And don’t rule out your local newspapers as well as major job sites such as Monster and Career Builder.

ProBlogger is a blog and job board for bloggers only, not freelance writers. Indeed is a search engine for all kinds of jobs, not only freelance writing jobs.

Freelance Writing Jobs is a blog and community for freelance writers. That’s the difference. We really are the number one community specifically geared towards freelance writers.

I can see though why you would think I made a mistake and thank you for looking out for the FWJ community.

Lovely! I can’t remember if I got my first job from Angela Hoy or from freelancewritinggigs, but either way I love you both. You put together a great list! There are some websites that I’ll absolutely have to try. Can I add one more though? I get a ton of good paying work from oDesk.com. The majority of jobs there pay very well. I still come back to you guys for all my encouragement and advice!
