Two blogging days, two niche subjects, more at the banquet for you.
While on the journey of freelance writing, the majority of writers will find themselves either parading down Article Avenue or hanging out on Corporate Corner.
On Article Avenue, writers both newbie and experienced, will find boutique shops offering tips, haute writing challenges, the latest trends, industry news and insider expert interviews, all geared toward making each article you write the best you’ve written so far. While on Article Avenue the FWJ community will be able to stop under shady “evergreen” topics such as:
o Interviewing 101
o Bullets Make the Point
o Beyond Google – Research Tips
o Anatomy of a Newspaper Article
o Break into Small Town Journalism
o Busting Into Glossies
o P.U. – Why That Web Article Stinks
Those in the know and those dipping their toes in article writing will love the sites and sounds of Article Avenue.
Others in the FWJ community may find their home on Corporate Corner. This is where the press release writers, the brochure designers and web content developers, etc. stop to congregate. These writers talk headlines, clients, newsletters and SEO. Much like Article Avenue, Corporate Corner will have a large grove of “evergreen” topics to anchor the community including:
o Top 5 Mistakes Writers Make When Creating a Press Release
o Take the Boring Out of Brochures
o Stop! Before you Write…Finding the Audience
o Strange CapITalization and Other Business Writing No-No’s
o Stop Giving It Away on the First Date – How to Tease Your Clients into a Relationship
The Corner will also have the improvisational style of a street corner-singing group. Collaborations, “Q and A” sessions and undiscovered talent opportunities will blend in with expert advice and interviews to create a unique, harmonious melody.
Whether you find yourself strolling down the Avenue, hanging out on the Corner or stopping by both, the FWJ community will have a banquet of information from which to nourish their writing spirit. Let my experience, passion and dedication be your guide as we map out this freelance journey together.

Looking forward to Q&A. Most of my Qs are for when I get outside my niche. Though I also have several about how to deal with teens (I have two).
Looks good! But, if you had to choose only one of these areas, which would you feel more comfortable writing about?
Phil: I think the Q & A would be popular. Though I wouldn’t touch the teen questions with a long pole :0)
Evan: Tough question. I do them interchangeably so I’m comfortable with both. Hmm I don’t know if I could pick. I love interviewing people and crafting artcles, but I also love working with companies to deliver product…
I find myself on Article Avenue more often than in the Corporate Corner.
However, the corporate stuff, particularly press releases, interests me. I have limited experience writing them and often wonder more about it all.
Kori -
Writing press releases is interesting work. It’s like selling without the rah-rah. It has a vibe like articles where you are trying to find the right audience for the information, then you are crafting the message with what you want the audience to do. But the format is more structured, it’s a nice change up for most.
Very creative presentation! If I recall correctly, the job is for two posts a week, so Article Avenue and Corporate Corner could each get one post a week. Pretty clever – and a great way to keep things interesting for you while still being very helpful to the community.
Great idea!
Many years ago I walked down Article Avenue, and oddly enough I never returned. I adore what I do, but I also would be keen to learn more about this sect and learn from other’s experiences. I have never entered Corporate Corner, but like Kori, press releases do interest me. I have spent years stripping away the PR to get to the real story, it would be awesome to learn more about the PR writing style.
If you were hired to offer tips and advice about the ideas and topics you expressed in your post, you’d definitely have me onboard as a reader of your posts. You have my vote this week. Good luck!
I have a condo in the tower on Corporate Corner LOL
But I want to buy a second home in the Print Media Penthouse.
Interesting presentation this week. For some reason I pictured these two streets in 1930s Chicago with the old music and everything. LOL.
Thank you for this post. I like the idea of learning more in both the Article Avenue and Corporate Corner areas of writing. I appreciate the fact that you provided a few topics on both that you will cover, while leaving yourself open to additional topics whether it is via Question and Answers or based on more of your experience.
It sounds to me like you would be an excellent addition to the FWJ team.
All the best to you in this round of votes.
I think both niches would be very welcome here at FWJ – and if you make it to the top we can discuss which one you would like to write most.
As for a Q&A, I love Q&A’s so much I’m planning on starting our weekly Q&A again here – and already have a bunch of letters for this weekend. I’m also going to have Q&A’s with experts in various niches and people who hire writers. Getting our questions answered is always a good thing.
I like both of these ideas, though I’m partial to Article Avenue. That’s for purely selfish reasons, though.
I don’t know what the rest of FWJ would rather see. I think you have a good mix of article ideas for new and veteran writers, which will help build the community here.
I live in Article Corner, and have holiday home on Corporate Avenue, so both offerings suit me very well. Good luck on this round of votes.
Dani – Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Aurora – Your name makes me think of She-Ra, one of my all time fav cartoons. She was He-Man’s twin sister and her name was Aurora. Thanks for the kind words.
Jenny – I know the doorman at Print Media Apts., they make you walk up to the Penthouse (with your luggage), hard work but totally worth it :0) You’re going to be a great asset to the discussion!
Kristy – Don’t forget the old fashion barbershop with the barber pole.
JennyB – Thank you very much!
Deb – Oooh, goodie. Q&A is always a hit!
Brandi – There’s nothing selfish about looking for what you need from here. It’s a good thing you know what you’re looking for…
Damaria – Summer home, Love it! ahahaha!
I think you did a great job on both the slant of your post as well as hooking your readers.
Both niches are relevant to us, and I think it would be interesting to take a poll to see what readers in the FWJ focus on.
I myself maintain two ‘personas.’ My writing business is broken down into two distinct segments, and I maintain separate websites for both my corporate clients and my literary/publication pursuits.
My preference would be that you keep both aspects, and I really like Dani’s idea of focusing on each respectively in alternate posts.
Kreacher – Thanks! My thoughts were to have one day be for “Avenue” and the other day for “Corner,” but truly it’s up to Deb on whether she wants two or one.
Either way it should be fun and interesting. There is a lot of information, data and news to be mined from both topics.
