Steve - Find your niche and see if you can find a site/magazine (magazine is your best bet) that will pay for your reviews. In addition to paying you (sometimes a meager wage) you do get a copy of the magazine your review is in. What do you consider low pay for a review? Most do not pay reviewers at all, except for the books. I have built a substantial library on topics I love, so for me, it is worth it. I believe the most I have made for a review is $100 but assignments were far and few between.
You might want to consider interviewing authors, that is a great way to get your name out there!

@Steve

I did two reviews for Atlantic Publishing Company. They gave me one assignment and then said my reviews were fantastic and exactly what they needed and I never heard another word from them. I was paid as promised, but two months later she emailed me again saying I'd never given her my paypal address and therefore she couldn't submit payment. So didn't seem very organized.

In addition, many book review sites can't pay so it's a tough area to make lots of money. I've been reviewing for Publisher's Weekly, one of the largest book review publications, and they pay what Atlantic Publishing Company (APC) offered me. PW only gives out about a book every three weeks, so even then you won't make a lot of money per week with PW.

Publishers give us free books to review figuring that's payment enough. APC is paying you to give reviews of the books they've published and then post them all over their Web site, Amazon, B&N, Borders and I think I missed one. They'll only send a download version of the book, not a print copy.

Thanks for the leads, as always! A few were really short and really vague! I still don't understand the point of putting in ads like that, but to each their own.

I also wanted to say thanks. I got my second gig this week from your site... it's incredible the information I've learned here and the things you ladies keep available to us. If I have writing concerns or questions, I come here first. If I want a cheerleading section for a succcess (like today) I also come here first. :)

Thanks again!

I just wanted to say thank you! I got a couple of jobs from your lists this summer and one of those clients referred me to another, which resulted in a nice contract for a book translation. All from a boring low-pay ad. So you never know! Thank you once again!

Chris, here's a little something about writing for Suite 101:

Has anyone ever worked with Atlantic Publishing Company before as a book reviewer? The pay they are offering me is pretty crappy, but I need to get some references as a book reviewer. Also, I can learn from the books I will be reading.

Question-has anyone ever done any work for Suite 101? I applied online yesterday and was accepted. It reminds me of Demand Studios in that you set up an online account and are responsible for submitting 400 word articles, at least 10 every 3 months. However, payment is done through advertising revenue sharing so I'm a little unsure about proceeding. I could use the extra work but don't want to sell away my work only to find that it's a couple of bucks per article. Any information or experience with this company would be much appreciated.

Thanks to a great list and here's hoping for a quiet weekend.

After one week of driving a carpool, I'm already fed up of this school year - not a good thing. The boys are great, but take seven towns, 1200 students, all requiring parents or a car pool to be driven to the high school which is on one of the busiest roads in the northern part of the state and it's a nightmare that I'm not enjoying. And the state just raised the driving age here, so until my son's a senior, there's no chance of getting out of this daily carpool nightmare.
