The Health Writer position contacted me nearly immediately. They really liked my writing style and said my writing background fit their needs – Yeah! This one pays quite well and look promising. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Is it just me or are more and more job listings for writers looking for locals? It seems like a lot of them are wanting writers to pop in to the office. I`m in Guatemala, so that won`t be happening anytime soon.

I write for Demand. They take about a day to get back after a preliminary screening, but they then make you a permanent offer about a week later. It’s great! They give you a limit of 10 articles at first (“How To” format only), changing the limit as you go. I haven’t gotten any other formats yet, but they do exist.

My one complaint is that articles can sit in their editing queue for a while. It’s frustrating, esp. when you think that you’ll get paid one week, and you don’t. Otherwise, can’t beat it.

I too applied to Demand Studios quite awhile back but never heard a peep. I am Canadian too. Maybe they figured that out and that’s why I never got a response back. No where did I see that they only accept US writers. Maybe I missed something. *Scratches head and moves on.*

I was accepted a day or so after applying to them a week back, but when I went to fill out the US tax form they have online, I realized that they don’t employ writers outside the US (I’m in Canada). I emailed to make sure this was in fact correct, and not just that I needed to request another form, and got a rather terse email back basically saying that I should have mentioned I was Canadian and that they wouldn’t have even looked at my application if they’d known. I swallowed my pride and wrote back an apology for the confusion, and wondered if sending my Social Insurance Number helped at all, but haven’t heard back. That’s been the extent of my experience with Demand.

@ Kecia–I applied for Demand Studios last week and was accepted the same day, so from my experience it shouldn’t take that long. Perhaps others had a different experience. I have heard that the editing/review process tends to take a while, perhaps it also takes a while for application reviews in certain instances. I was accepted for “How To” articles only, at the moment–perhaps it takes longer for other sections such as “about”. Hope this was helpful, I know how frustrating it can be waiting for a response of some kind.

It’s not on this post, but I have been seeing a few job postings for Demand Studios lately. I applied to write for them almost two weeks ago, and haven’t heard anything. I’ve tried logging into their system, and it keeps telling me my application has been submitted, and that I will be notified when it is processed. I’m pretty sure some people here said they write for them, so I was wondering how long it takes to get accepted as a writer. Also, will I find out if I have been turned down, or do they only contact those they are interested in working with??

@ Mari: I agree it can be frustrating when the rate of pay is not posted in the ad. Many job ads in the brick and mortar world don’t include this information either, though.

@ Jennifer: You could include something in your cover letter saying that you are looking for experience in a different type of writing and are looking for opportunities in the content writing and blogging areas. It’s a numbers game as much as anything else. Just keep applying for the jobs you are interested in and you will start getting nibbles.

Thank you Tish. I think you may be right. I have been emphasising my degree and my experience in the emails. I currently want to writing other than Technical Writing because writing software documentation made me not enjoy writing as much, if that makes sense…

Just keep being persistent. Your 10 years of tech writing experience may make them think you wouldn’t want to write for what they are paying, as web content and blog posts are almost always lower paid than tech writing.

I have a question. I’ve been apply to jobs for the past few weeks and haven’t gotten any nibbles back. So I think I need to change my approach. I am pretty qualified on paper (Masters in Technical Writing and 10 years experience as a technical writer). I am not applying for tech writing stuff but website, content and blogs.

When you write about the job opportunities, what do you include? I am currently writing a brief email about why I am qualified for that job, my resume and a relevant writing sample. Is there something I am missing or do I just need to keep being persistant?

Thanks as always. The NYC food writer doesn’t give any idea of payment. I emailed the address to ask, so far have heard nothing. It’s so dumb of posters to be vague or say nothing; why should writers go to the trouble of writing letters, providing samples, etc. if they have no idea what the poster’s end of the deal is?
