Do you know the state where they are registered as a business? Might be worth talking to a Better Business Bureau or Attorney General’s Office.

If you are unable to locate the company or get your money, might be worth your time to say that you can post to Preditors and Editors (misspelling is intentional here as in predator + editor) http://anotherealm.com/prededitors/

It is also a good resource for finding out about companies that screw writers over before one gets shafted.

I feel yah mmeetoilenoir on not getting paid and needing the money! I have one company that has already published my article that owes me a pretty hefty check –three months in and all I have gotten is promises–I feel very helpless and don’t know what to do, I mean they already have my work!

I agree about the low-paying jobs. They really do stink, and you should get paid what you’re worth. That being said, I just took an unpaid job with a media company that’s building a brand new site. However, the site is GORGEOUS, and I’m certain that I’m going to be well-paid in several months when things get off the ground. Plus, the perks and contacts that I can make will be well worth my time. Sooooo…I guess it’s almost like an internship, in that sense. I have to start somewhere. I’ll only take a free project if it looks like it’s going to pay off in spades later (like this one). Otherwise, someone’s going to have to pay a good amount.

I’m having probs right now with one travel site who can’t seem to pay on time or keep their interface updated. I think I may bail soon. This stinks – I need the money.

I haven’t been able to find anything, either…that’s why I’m suspicious, too!

Alicia–FYI Online is ‘supposed’ to be an online educational system. They’re looking for people to develop online curriculum. Unfortunately, that’s all I know.

Stephanie, I would gladly take a job paying fifty dollars per article–I hate wen I see someone offering a dollar per 500 words ( which I saw today)–that is less than 1/2 a cent a word– it devalues all of us when they offer it, and when someone takes it…there has to be a line

I suppose they’re operating from the mindset of planting wildflower seeds:

You throw handfulls out and hope that some come up.

Same thing applies to those folks who were applying for these jobs they considered low paying:

Apply to absolutely everything to see who responds, then when the jobs come in, feel badly that the high paying gigs didn’t blossom.

Well, at least they got the job, low paying as it was, and it’s building their portfolio of jobs so how can that be bad?

Ten jobs worth $50 each or one job for $500 still give you $500 in the end, plus you have the opportunity to stretch your writing chops writing about a number of different subjects rather than one single topic…

That’s me, ever the optimist!

So what I’m thinking is that if you have enough time in your freelance writing day to write a complaining Craigslist ad, then you should take one of those “low-paying” jobs and use that free time to earn some more cash. You can always quit when you’ve filled up your workday full enough that you don’t have enough time to write complainy emails.

And yes, its 4:00pm here and I’m not remotely done for the day. But, we’re going on vacation soon and I’m typing this while I wait for Travelocity to search through “millions of fares”.

Agree, it is a bit unnecessary for the flaming posts. Besides, I’ve taken on contracts here and there with less pay then I’d normally like, because it offered a resume-building experience. In every single instance, it’s led on to further work from the client on higher rates!

Eric – maybe the companies will see them … maybe they won’t. Also other companies who believe that low rates are standard may see the ad and realize that such low rates are not the norm.

Like I said, i don’t do it myself, but we live in a free society and if someone wants to show their displeasure about rates in this format, then I am not going to ‘diss them’ for it.

I don’t do it myself … but if someone wants to vent via this method … I don’t discourage it. There is a good chance that potential employers will see the ads.

I think there are more sites that have deeper problems. I dislike sites that make you pay for job information like Elance or Guru.com. I also do not like sites like Get A Freelancer because the work advertised is miserly in the pay. One cent per word, come on now, I didn’t fall off the apple cart yesterday. Maybe the day after… - I won’t settle for less when I can get better information elsewhere.
